The Grey and Black Wars

Cairo Makeo

Cairo eventually grew tired of banging and slumped down against the door. He decided he'd just wait for a guild member to come by. He began to whistle quietly to himself and after a brief while grew bored of that too. He stood up and dusted off his clothes. He was hungry. With a last look at the door he left to find a suitable target...

********

He made his way back to the guild hall after a short while and sat down on a nearby barrel with his food. He nibbled on a piece of bread that he had purchased with some money he... found. "Where is everybody...?" He glanced left and right, "Do this place got Windows?" Cairo crept along the side of the Warehouse-like structure, looking for a point of entry. The surface of the Hall wasn't much to look at but... There. A hole in the brick wall just large enough for a child to fit through, about three quarters the distance up the wall. Time to get to work.

Drackel had not started out a thief but to buy his supplies he needed the coin and stealing was the easiest way. Or so he thought until the war had started now he was fighting all the time. Moving slowly over the rooftop he spotted the chimney he was on a snatch and run but it could easily degrade into battle. A shadow had been following him for the better part of the day and he was sure it was someone who meant him ill. Detaching his arm he dropped it down the chimney. Jumping form roof to roof he waited for his arm to let him in. Soon he heard a lock tumble and the front door slide ever so slightly open as he slid in his fingers. Opening the door he grabs his hand and quickly scouts the small room.

An older gentleman, if you could call Basil that, watched the boy as he scouted the place out. It was rather amsuing to watch the boy try and figure it out. The man was probably in his mid to late sixties and had that overall feel about him that just screamed 'Wisdom'. Of course his dark brown hair was turning gray but not thinning and his eyes still had that twinkle of youth... or rememberance of youth.

He quietly walked up and tapped the preoccupied boy on the shoulder. "I say... are you going to try and get in through that tiny hole, lad?" He asked sounding quite amused. He played with his goatee for a moment, he was a very trim and proper looking man... nice clothes, and an expensive looking cane.

"It's an awful climb don't you think?" He asked as he looked up. "I don't know if my old body could pull myself up there..." He said this as if dispairing but then he was jovial again. "Well... go on then," he said taking a step back and looking at the hole... and then to the boy.... back to the hole and then to the boy again.... "I say dear boy if you don't climb up there you can't get in..." He said adjusting his glasses.

Dahlia and Talon

Talon... He was not ready to meet his maker. He was not ready for death to take him yet... and this man... this man would not be the one to take him. He looked up with all intents to kill this man with his bare hands if the need called for, which it did cause he had no idea where his daggers were exactly.

And when he was sure he would dart forward and attack the love of his life came into view and knocked that assassin away. He felt the stress fade but it was replaced when he realized that she... that she might have hurt herself. He moved forward and gently helped her up. He placed his foot firmly on the other's hand and held him there as he looked her up.

"About time you got here..." He said gruffly but it was apparent that he was glad she had shown up. He moved down and picked up the assassin... He shoved him against the wall before throwing him roughly to the ground. The theif was amused at how the man bounced as he made contact with the wood floor. Series of kicks and punches later...

"Are you going to fucking talk or am I going to let her take over... You've been lucky... I won't touch the family jewels but they mean nothing to her... She'll squash them like grapes!" He growled.

Thain moved quickly, slid his sword back into its sheath before moving forward and taking Selene's hand in his own, kissing it softly. He then bowed before them, "Thain Marlaiw at your service."

This prompted Jonathon to laugh which caused Thain to look at him.

"Do not trust this man Selene. He is a charmer to say the least but then you would find that he has stolen all the clothes from off your back. Which in itself is not such a bad thing."

Thain moved closer to Jon and smiled at him, "I would never do such a thing to friends."

Jonathon made a sound as if he was almost choking, "You did it to me not a week ago...."

"Oh yes. I totally forgot about that but then again it was for a good cause. I needed that money."

Jonathon laughed at that before he moved forward to grab Thain in a headlock and start to mess up his hair. He smiled at Selene as Thain tried to move away from Jon but the headlock was too strong and Jonathon had no intention of letting go. He looked up at Selene with a huge grin, "This may take a while. It would be best if you find a room for yourself while my friend and I sort this little matter out."

He began to mess up Thain's hair again while saying, "You knew you shouldn't have stolen from me. You knew there would be consequences."

Thain moved quickly and kicked out Jonathon's left leg, sending him to the floor then looked down at him, "I knew that there would be consequences. I just wanted to see what they were."

Jonathon looked up at him with a smile and then they both started laughing. They looked at each other, the smile still on their faces as Thain helped Jonathon up and whispered in his ear, "It is not nice to keep a woman waiting."

The banter was cute, and fun to watch she would admit as she sat back and smiled. Both of the men were interesting for sure and she was sure that she knew why they were such good friends....

Obviously they were both idiots...

"This may take a while. It would be best if you find a room for yourself while my friend and I sort this little matter out."

Normally she would have argued but she didn't feel the need to. "Alright... I'll hang something on the doorknob..." She said with a laugh as she tried to think of something... well she had an idea but she didn't want anyone else getting their hands on it and then she never getting them back.

She went to her room. Yes... she had her own personal room that she didn't have to pay for. She was proud of it and the same time she wasn't. She found a bowl of fruit... a few grapes present... So she strung them on some thread, making a sticky necklace... and hung it on the knob for him to find.

It was amusing to her at the least.

"Home sweet home..." She said softly as she undressed and then put on one of her beautiful silk nightgowns and robe. She walked out onto the balcony and waited.

Jon slowly got up off the floor and looked at Thain.

"You know, for once you are right. I would love nothing more than to stay here, chat and wrestle a little bit more with you but there are things that I really need to do. Thanks for opening my eyes."

He slowly brushed himself off, shaking Thain's hand with a smile before he walked off down the hallway to hopefully find Selene's room. He knew that she had hung something on the doorknob and grinned when a thought came to him of what it was but knew that it wouldn't be anything like that and shook his head, the grin quickly disappearing. It was then that he wondered what it might be the second he saw the grapes hanging from the doorknob.

Moving as quickly as he wanted to he went to the door and went to turn the handle but stopped, looking carefully at it. After a few seconds he saw that the trap mechanism had not been set and turned the doorknob, swinging it slowly open.

The moment he saw the room though he thought that he might have gotten the wrong one as it was one of the finest he could ever hope to see in this hall. He started to step backwards until he saw Selene standing at the balcony with her back to him. He closed the door carefully, flicking the switch for the trap as he did before moving towards the balcony.

As he walked to her he could not help but admire the room as it was truly beautiful like the person who occupied it. He moved again towards Selene until he was standing behind her and said, "So, what is it that I owe you for the money you so kindly spent on me?"

How funny it would have been for her to have had the switch on and him to come walking in but she wouldn't do that to him here... anywhere else where it would have been just him and her...

It would have been funny with the two of them but not with the whole guild... then it would have been just cruel.

"So, what is it that I owe you for the money you so kindly spent on me?"

"Catch me," she said as she fell back, trusting him completely to catch her. She looked up at Jon. "Your debt is repaid..." She teased before standing back up. She looked out over the city and sighed. "The money was just a pass... not for this room," she said feeling as though she would have to explain it to him.

"I take it that it's not everyday you room in one like this," she said motioning to the finer things that most of the normal guild members were not privy to. She had to smile at his answer.

"Well... as long as we stay here... this is where we will stay," she said soothingly as she looked back out to the night sky.

He looked at her with a smile and then around the room. He had not seen the like of it in this guild hall before and wondered just what she had done to get such a room but did not want to ask her that after what she had done for him.

"No, I have not seen a room such as this in this hall but that is why I don't stay here much. I never liked having to pay Valian just to stay here and decided it was time to have a place that I could call my own. It is true that it is not the largest home in the city but I don't spend much time there anyway. If you would like to I can take you there."

He knew that she would be in shock at what she had just learned about him but as a thief he was used to keeping secrets. It was not wise to tell everyone where you lived.

He moved slowly to the bed, took off his boots and lay down on it with a small smile on his face.

Dahlia and Talon

"About time you got here..." He said gruffly.

Dahlia raised an eyebrow at Talon’s tone but still gave him a slight smile. He did want her near, despite the bitterness that she knew he felt.

“You didn’t think I’d come, did you?”

She watched for a moment as Talon beat the would-be assassin near senseless. Little had changed from their youth in that regard. She was always the cool one, he the fiery one.

"Are you going to fucking talk or am I going to let her take over... You've been lucky... I won't touch the family jewels but they mean nothing to her... She'll squash them like grapes!" He growled.

Dahlia knelt to the bloodied man on the ground.

He’s just barely a man… Dahlia thought, as she appraised the youth from beneath her dark blue hood. At least he looks it.

Her fingers curled roughly in the young man’s hair and she jerked his head back. There was defiance in his eyes, as she drew a dart from the pouch at her belt.

“I was loyal to the Guild once…” Dahlia said eerily calm. “but the Guild betrayed me, and now you think you can come here and take my beloved from me as well? I think not.”

She drew the poisoned dart closer to the assassin’s face.

“One scratch will send you to a most vile death, my friend. That I can assure you. You can spare yourself such a painful, and dare I say, embarrassing fate, if you tell me who ordered the contract, and why.”

The poison was a simple paralytic—it wouldn’t even kill, but she hoped that between Talon’s beating and her bluff, that this young man would spare himself any further trouble.

“My patience grows thin …”

It is true that it is not the largest home in the city but I don't spend much time there anyway. If you would like to I can take you there."

Honestly... she was surprised that he was telling her all of this. She knew that they were... well she had saved his life a few times and that they had slept together but was that really grounds for such trust?

"Jon... I'd love to go there with you," Selene said looking into his eyes. There was something there between them... She wasn't sure what they were doing together but there was something much bigger at work her.

She followed him to the bed and crawled in after him. "It's been a long night huh?" She asked as she scratched his stomach with her nails. "You can get a good night's rest here," she assured him as she kissed his ear.

Jon raised his head to look at Selene as she lay down next to him.

"It hasn't been that long a day, it is just that I have been running around everywhere and need some plus to rest for a little while."

He lay back and closed his eyes, all the while wondering how she could have gotten such a room as this when every one else had a room that could barely be classed as liveable and they had to pay almost half of their money to get it. He rolled over and looked around once again, noticing just how beautiful it was in here. He looked at Selene and wanted to ask her how she had gotten this room but knew how rude it would be for him.

"I would love for you to come with me as well. That way you don't have to live in this place under Valian's thumb."

"It hasn't been that long a day, it is just that I have been running around everywhere and need some plus to rest for a little while."

She smirked. "Well if you hadn't wandered downstairs and tried to ditch me you could have rested until the assassins came to find us," she said with a smirk. What would Valian say if he saw her right now with Jon? He would be less than pleased that was for certain. She cuddled up close to the man and sighed.

"I would love for you to come with me as well. That way you don't have to live in this place under Valian's thumb."

She bit her lip as she looked up at him.

"You don't think he'd look for me?" She asked as if it was silly to assume such a thing.

“You didn’t think I’d come, did you?”

"Like you could stay away," he mumbled.

“I was loyal to the Guild once… but the Guild betrayed me, and now you think you can come here and take my beloved from me as well? I think not.”

Talon looked up at the beloved comment. Well, wasn't that nice to hear from time to time. He woul be sure to show her just how much he had missed her. He could feel the beginnings of a long night... once they got to a hotel of course.

“One scratch will send you to a most vile death, my friend. That I can assure you. You can spare yourself such a painful, and dare I say, embarrassing fate, if you tell me who ordered the contract, and why.”

The assassin knew that she had to be joking... she... she was an assassin but it became painfully clear she wasn't fucking with him on this one...

“My patience grows thin …”

"Caim DeLeMount..." He managed as he shut his eyes. He was sure to be followed now... hunted down himself for what he had been unable to do... and for the information he had given.

The killer moves and the spear sings

Gali moved into the crowd as he saw an old man walking between the throng, it was market day and it was busy. The spear vibrated on his back, he had found his target.

Gali followed the old man through small streets and alleys, staying well out of sight.

“Watchessss thisss one I sense evil all aroundsss him,” The spear spoke to Gali with genuine concern.

Gali always found it strange that the spear watched out for him, however much they bickered. “Yes, yes old friend I will watch out.” Gali moved behind a pile of rubbish in an empty alleyway. He could just see the old man move out of sight at the end. Gali untied the spear and took off the covering; he undid his cloak and let it fall to the floor. “Ready.”

“Yess I am alwayss ready . . . Andss Im not your friendsss.” The spear spoke with almost with a chuckle.

Gali just shook his head, and then pulled the spear up, he spun it around a few times feeling the weight. The spear was a part of him, and it blurred around with an unnatural speed. He moved in silence his muscles moving in perfect harmony.

Tirinath finished preparing the rooms and walked back out to where his guests were. "Well your rooms are finished, they are just down the hall." He tossed each one of them a large bag of coins. "Buy whatever you need, clothes etc. I have business to attend to at the guildhall." he said, having changed into a pair of black trousers and boots with a loose white shirt. He strapped his scimitar around his waist and a few knives on his belt and donned his cape. He tied a bag of coins around his belt with metal wire. "Cutpurse's knives will have a difficult time with metal ties." he said and walked out the door into the sunlight.

"Why would he come looking for you? I know he would be pleased to have me leave this place but why would he hunt for you?"

He lay there for a second or two and looked at Selene, wondering what was going through her head and what she was so worried about. Was there something that she was hiding from him to keep him safe? He looked straight into her eyes.

"What are you not telling me? I could take you away from here to keep you safe if you are being held here against your will. Do you want me to do that for you?"

He knew what he was doing was opening himself up to her, something he had not done for anyone else and he found that he wanted to tell her everything. There was something though that was telling him not to; that little voice in the back of his head that normally kept himself out of trouble for the most part. He moved suddenly up off the bed and walked to the balcony, looking down at the city and knew that there were places out there where the two of them could hide, at least for a little while.

He turned back to look at Selene, "Do you truly want to stay here?"

"Why would he come looking for you? I know he would be pleased to have me leave this place but why would he hunt for you?"

"Come on Jon..." She said snuggling closer to him. Did he really not see it? Did he really not know? Well... she couldn't imagine anyone else sleeping with her if they knew and most people knew. "It's not obvious?" She asked.

"What are you not telling me? I could take you away from here to keep you safe if you are being held here against your will. Do you want me to do that for you?"

She saw him opening himself up to her and she couldn't hurt him.

"Do you truly want to stay here?"

Selene looked into his eyes and tried not to cry. "I want to go with you..." She said honestly before she moved in and kissed him. "I don't want to stay here anymore..."

Dahlia and Talon

"Like you could stay away," he mumbled.

Dahlia gave Talon a brief look and smiled slightly though he seemed annoyed.

Fortunate, that … Dahlia thought. It’s fortunate that I love you like I do. Else you'd be dead by now …

Her smile faded as she turned her attention turned back to the assassin in her grasp.

"Caim DeLeMount..." He managed as he shut his eyes.

Dahlia withdrew the dart from the other assassin’s face and pocketed it again. She supposed she didn’t have to know why the contract had been placed just now. It was enough that she had gotten the name of the one who had commissioned it. The who almost always eventually led to the why

“What do you want to do with him, Talon?” Dahlia said, never taking her eyes off the young man before her. “We can leave him at the mercy of the Guild. They’ll likely hunt him down for failing his contract, especially if the patron who commissioned it was wealthy or powerful. They’ll need to save face and protect their honor Or…”

Her hand tightened in the assassin’s hair. His eyes opened, and her face was grim as she stared back at him. If Talon wished this man dead, then she would send him to his next life.

Valian walked through the hallways, he was not in a happy mood as anyone that saw his face could tell. Jonathon had chosen to make a fool out of him earlier this day and Selene had saved him by giving him the money for the night. He had gone to the room that Jonathon usually stayed in to tell him that he was not happy with what had happened but when he did not find him in there his mood got worse. He had gone to Thain to demand where he had gone but he had not told him where he was. At first Valian wanted to know if he was lying but he knew that Thain would not do that to him, his life was far too precious.

He walked through the halls once again, determined to find Jonathon but he knew that there would be no finding him and had to go to the one place he could find piece. He went to the door but when he tried to turn the lock he heard a slight click and moved back just as the trap in the door went off. He stepped back, looked at it before he stepped forward and slammed his fist against the door.

"What is going on in there? Is there someone in there with you? Open the door now?!"

Selene looked up when she heard that click and looked to John in a panicked state... Sure the door was looked and she was ever grateful to have John with her but she knew better.

"What is going on in there? Is there someone in there with you? Open the door now?!"

"Of course not!" She yelled as she gave John a small push. Her dresser was catty cornered and there was enough space for him to sit back there comfortably while she dealt with Valian. She pushed him and motioned for him to hide.

"I didn't know you were coming tonight... and after such a chase," she said crossing the room quickly to unlatch the door... "I was tired," she said opening it up for her fiance. She smiled warmly and didn't hesitate to kiss him as she always did.

"I wouldn't mind if you need me," she said silkily though really she had another man in the room that she would much rather have a top her.

Valian placed both his hands on Selene's face and kissed her deeply on the lips. He wanted to ask her what she was so worried about but as he kissed her all his worries were taken away with it. He held her close, not caring about anything but his fiancee who was now in his arms, not even that little bastard Jon. He felt a small shock of anger run through him when he thought of Jon and wanted to ask Selene if she had seen him but he really didn't care now.

"You know that I love you my darling Selene. You know I would do anything for you; that is why I asked you to marry me."

He slowly took her to the bed and began to kiss her neck, knowing just how much it drove her crazy. He loved how he made her squirm and move underneath him while he did everything to her. The only woman that he loved in this world was her.

It was then that there was a knock on the door and Valian got up off the bed. He stood there and looked at the man there.

"Can this not wait?!"

The man stood there, stunned by the outburst.

"There is a problem in the hall Valian. One of the others have been brought here close to death."

He turned to Selene with a smile.

"I will be back my love. I promise you that."

She allowed the older man to kiss her and he was so loving about it. She knew that at some time she did love him, or at least she thought she did. Selene did not feel that way normally but when he told her that he loved her and talked about how much he did... Well she did feel bad... like she was tricking him.

"You know that I love you my darling Selene. You know I would do anything for you; that is why I asked you to marry me."

"I know..." She said as she allowed herself to be taken to the bed. Those kisses, yes she loved them once and she knew how to move just the way he liked but she didn't really feel like it. He never changed... He hurt her from time to time and while she had not known Jon long... She... well she knew there would be at least something for her there.

"Can this not wait?!"

She too froze... It was his anger that frightened her. She didn't really love him... She was afraid of him and... and sometimes she just forgot.

"There is a problem in the hall Valian. One of the others have been brought here close to death."

That smile. It frightened her but she smiled back convincingly.

"I will be back my love. I promise you that."

"I know..." She said as he shut the door. And once she was sure he was gone the beautiful canine girl started to cry a little. She knew Jon would hate her now and... and she would be stuck...

Jon sat there in the closet and looked at the door. He knew that he should go out there and talk to her but right now he did not want to see Selene's face. It would hurt her for him to stay there but he did not care what she had to say. He heard the door close and her footsteps as she moved towards the closet again. He could hear her crying softly and knew the reason why but did not really care; all that he wanted was to stay in here and let his anger subside.

He opened the door slowly and the first thing that he saw was her face. Moving out of the closet he looked everywhere but straight at her. Walking straight towards where his belongings were he gathered them up then turned to look at her.

"How could you not have told me something like this. You go to bed with me but yet you are in love with Valian. How could you not have told me something like this; how could you have lied to me?"
