The Island

Krys felt herself smile as she made her way through the bush, feeling her brother's gaze on her like a burning presence on her skin. Every once in a while she would look over her shoulder, to see if she could catch him blushing. Instead, she would meet his eyes every time, a longing in them she had never seen before. And what about her? Here they were stranded and she was focusing more on how there was suddenly a sexual frustration between them instead on focusing on getting them the supplies they needed to survive. What was wrong with her? Was it fatigue, shock? Maybe it was just hormones...

Finally reaching their camp, she felt herself stop and glance where they body of the man had laid. If there was one thing she would not permit it's for her brother to be laying where that man had, and no amount of hormones were gonna stop her. Grabbing the bag of important stuff they had found the day before, she placed their clothes carefully inside it before turning towards the rock formation a couple of hundred feet away. "Let's grab whatever we can and head over there. The cave should be big enough to hold whatever we find that is useful. Once you know where it is, i'll go back to the lake and gets some water and fruits for us."

The site of their ragged campsite, the same campsite where the only other survivor had died, had a sobering effect on Scott. The swirl of awkward desires and intense emotions that had occupied his mind for the last hour slowly faded, replaced by the stark reality that he and his sister would be resigned to the same fate if they didn't take precautions. Even if they did, survival was going to be an uphill climb, he told himself.

"I think that's everything," he said as he stood back and glanced across the sand, making sure they hadn't missed anything important. Convinced that they had everything, Scott turned back toward his sister, the sun setting along the horizon behind her, causing her bare skin to glow a pale orange.

"We should hurry, so we can get a fire started up there before it gets too dark," he said.

Quietly, Krys moved towards the coat they had used to keep warm the previous night, having been laid forgotten there. Grabbing it, she carefully folded it and placed it inside another bag, the one where they had taken some of the dry clothes to cover the old man the night before. They would need the clothing to make comfortable bedding. Looking around her, she gave the campsite a last look, before her eyes rested on her brother's. With a small, weary smile, she turned and started leading him towards their new sleeping place.

The trek didn't take long, even though they were both exhausted from the day's events. The cave mouth sat in a ledge high enough that it was easy for him to climb over and help her as well, though not low enough to the ground that they would have to worry about animals getting in. The space was big enough that they would have plenty of space to sleep in, make a fire and store whatever they found.

Once inside, the young woman picked a corner and started laying clothing on the floor, making a make shift bed for them. "Scott, we're going to need some medium sized rocks to go around the campfire. We wouldn't want it spreading around the cave..." she murmured quietly while she placed a second layer of clothing over the first, to make it more comfortable for them. She was hesitant to speak, wondering what he thought about what had happened back at the lake earlier that day.

After the sun sat on the beach and darkness fell outside the cave, a cold soberness seemed to descend on Scott and his sister. They went about starting a small fire, arranging the supplies they'd brought to the cave with them, and fashioning a makeshift bed all in silence, as if their minds were too occupied to even attempt small talk. Too preoccupied with thoughts of survival and death and uncertainty.

As Scott sat in front of the fire, his knees pulled up in front of him and his hands tucked into the pockets of the light jacket he was wearing, he couldn't help but wonder if he and Krys would ever be rescued. The thought of living thirty or forty years on a small island, scavenging for food and struggling to survive was almost as daunting as the thought of possibly dying on the island. The only thing that kept him from actually losing all hope was the thought of sharing whatever life he might be able to have with his sister.

Scott glanced over at Krys as his thoughts drifted to her, and to the moments they had shared by the small lake earlier in the day. Despite only being a few hours ago, it seemed like a distant memory. The sunlight and the warmth of the afternoon was gone and the strange sexual tension he had felt as they laid together on the rocks, resting and letting their bodies dry, had quieted. It was still there though, waiting for Scott to allow it back in, daring him to admit its existence. When he did think about those moments, the feeling of Krys' warm skin against his, the sight of her naked flesh, he did his best to justify his thoughts and actions and instincts, but it wasn't easy.

"Do you want anything else to eat?" he asked, finally breaking the long silence. He and Krys had both nibbled on some peanuts and crackers they'd found but neither seemed to have an appetite.

Once she had finished setting up the bed, Krys wrapped the big coat the had used around her shoulders and sat beside her brother in front of the fire, trying to get warm. Her hazel orbs watched the red-orange flames dance in front of her, as if it would yield the secret answer on how they would survive here until they were rescued. They had been lucky these first two days, but they would need protein to survive. The would have to hunt, fish... and make tools for them to be able to do it. Just the thought of it made her sigh, tiredly.

Her brothers voice reached her ears, and she turned her gaze to watch him. He looked as handsome as he had looked at the lake, the light from the fire casting contrasts on his skin, making those same, unsisterly thoughts rise in her. It wasnt just the sexual tension... she wanted to curl up in his arms and fall asleep there, feeling his chest rise and fall against her back, his breath teasing the back of her neck, feeling the life of him against her skin throughout the night.

Noticing she had been staring, she blushed lightly and looked back into the fire, replying in a soft voice "No, I'm alright. I'm not hungry at all..." she said before she hesitated "I think I'm going to bed..."

With that, she rose quietly and made her way to the pile of clothes that would be the bed. Taking off the coat, she laid as comfortably as she could before pulling the coat over her body, making sure to leave some for him to use when he laid beside her. Her eyes remained open, just watching the fire from where she lay, her chest tightening at the sudden, irrational fear of losing him at any point in time.

Yeah, I don't really feel like eating either, Scott thought to himself as he watched Krys stand and walk toward the make shift bed on the other side of the cave. As she shrugged out of the coat she'd been wearing and laid down, Scott turned his attention back to the fire in front of him. The dancing flames gave the cave walls a red-orange hue and made the walls look like they were shifting and changing. Everything is changing now, he said to himself, or has already changed.

With that uneasy acknowledgement fresh in his mind, Scott tossed another log onto the fire, making sure it was properly stoked, then stood and walked over to where his sister was laying. He stripped out of the clothes he was wearing except for his shorts, then lowered himself down beside Krys, careful not to disturb her as he slipped under the coat which wasn't really big enough to cover the both of them fully. He scooted closer to Krys, close enough that his chest was pressed against her back and slipped a hand around her waist, doing his best to keep her covered with the coat.

"I love you, sis," Scott whispered very softly against his sister's ear, "...and I'm glad you're here with me."
