Have to wonder if 2006 will be one of less tragedy than 2005. Just watching the latest on the earthquake in Pakistan, an estimated 19,000 dead so far, and so much chaos and lack of resources to deal with the disaster. My heart goes out to all who are suffering and those attempting to do anything possible.

I agree in regards to 2005, many awful events, personally as well as globally.

The horrors in Pakistan seem almost surreal, but I was listening to the news last night, and the U.S. sent cash and troops to Pakistan to help in the relief effort. I became annoyed with that report, it seems the U.S. needs to deal with it's own relief efforts before we should be going anywhere else.

I am sure the Katrina victims need their country at this time.

It is good if they are helping, though I get nervous when I hear of US troops being sent in anywhere to help because there is often this sense the US then is owed and also should control what help is given and to whom....and as was noted on a program here yesterday about the present situation in Africa, especially Malawi, help is only usually given if there is something in it for the US. And yes, it is remarkable that a response can be so quickly organised for another country, but not at home...and perhaps as many said at the time, there is more in that then is admitted, and much along the lines of vested interest many others in the world are commenting on.


It was good that countries such as the UK, officially asked before going into Pakistan to assist. They have been very instrumental in helping the Pakistan military and rescue teams with the rescue operations, and there have also been financial and medical aid supplied by the UK, other European countries, the Middle East, parts of Asia, and Australia.

A live news report on at the moment with the UK Pakistani ambassador said that there is disappointment in the small amount of aid (especially financial and medical) offered by the US, and that they have said they are sending helicoptors to help in the rescue, but as yet they have not arrived in Pakistan and there is no idea when they can be expected.

Yes, on the other hand I believe the US does have a responsibility to stabilize Iraq. To leave now would be even worse than starting the war in the first place.

New Orleans pretty much left our news completely, so I have no way knowing how it's going there. (Ok, yes, I could look at American news pages, but hey, there is stuff going on here (we finally seem to be getting a new government only 3 weeks or so after the election... ), so I don't really have the time to keep up with foreign countries' problems.)
But of course they should be putting more effort (relatively) into NO.

This area of the world has been unstable for thousands of years, we will never be able to improve things there, and daily, kids are dying for no real reason, this has become our era's Vietnam, and I can only see this ending badly.

The main platform of whoever will try to become president will be the pull out of our troops.

There have been over 1,100 soldiers killed since His Highness Bush said the war was over.

If they sent those 1,100 soldiers to New Orleans, they would still be alive, and New Orleans would be that much further along.

LOL, unfortunately there is a perception by the US government they can 'fix' the world, but until they can open their minds to the idea their way is not the only way, or necessarily the best way, and that perhaps much of what they see as needing 'fixing' isn't broken in the first place, I don't see it happening, nor do I think the rest of the world wants the US to involve itself in their affairs. I still find it difficult to comprehend how the tone and behaviour of the US toward the rest of the world has completely changed to an opposing way in my lifetime where many in the world now see them as a country to be feared, not friendly.
