I'm so sorry, gracie. How did she come to be involved with DCARA and ALDA? I don't know a whole lot about either agency but of course I have heard the names many times.

She started loosing her hearing in her 20's. By the time she was in her 30's she was nearly deaf. I was born when she was in her fourties and by then even with a hearing aid she couldn't hear very well. My grandma was not the type to sit around and feel sorry for herself, though. She learned sign language, and when she couldn't teach anymore (she was an English teacher) she got a job with DCARA. She also joined ALDA, because she is a late deafened adult. Grandma had a great ability to organize things and make them work, so that's probably why she ended up as Secretary for ALDA. By the time she was in her fifties, though she was completely deaf - not even a hearing aide was helpful. She taught me and my sisters and brother (and two cousins) sign language so we could talk to her. She was a very involved mother and grandmother and had a strong sense of family. My mom called her mom, until she realized that doing so was hurting my step mom (as in three or four years after the divorce) because my grandma was more of a mother to her than her own mother.

My sympathies to you. To lose someone so close and so important to your life is always painful; however, your beliefs will be a great comfort to you, knowing as you do that she has moved on to a place of great love and joy, and will be there - many, many years from now - when you arrive.

Um. Grandma wasn't a Christian. At least not to my knowledge. She was raised Christian, but I think she became an athiest - or so my mom says. I don't know what happened in the last few years of her life because with her health being like it was I was afraid my son (the very ADHD one) would wear her out and make her sicker. I remind myself that it's no one's business but God's who is going to heaven, and that quite a few 'Christians' won't be. It's comforting.

To my mind, it doesn't matter if she was formally a Christian or not - if she lived the way you've described here, I can't see a "loving God" turning her away... and as you said, there are quite a few "Christians" who will never see those Pearly Gates.

Double (but related) blurt:

3:30 a.m. sucks when you had very much planned on being sound asleep 3 1/2 or 4 hours earlier.

I get so tired of pain sometimes... when it's mine.

Master Gil would very much agree with you Sir_Winston. He hasn't been coming to bed until 3 or 4am because His insomnia is so bad.....but will crash out during the day which isn't helping.

Pain is a constant 24/7....neck, back, shoulders and I'm sure other places too. He has a constant headache because of the neck pain...we can only try to relieve it with heat or massage, pain meds make Him feel ill.

Be assured there are others here who know what you are going through :rose:

I would not compare my puny pains to Master Gil's - 'twould be comparing a mountain creek to the Amazon... but thank you for the empathy. :rose: (They're just aggravating as hell when they keep me from sleeping!)

MY grandma rocked. I just want to say that. She got a reward for all the work she's put into improving the laws concerning deaf adults. Did you know they used to take hearing children from deaf parents and my grandma was one of the front people for stopping that practice. She was either secretary or treasurer for ALDA (association of late deafened adults) and worked as a teacher for DCARA (Deaf Counseling and Referral Advocacy) in San Francisco. She also worked on getting grants and stuff for DCARA and ALDA.

More importantly when we were living in the midwest she flew out to see me and miss twice a year. When my dad decided to start seeing us again she'd fly out to get us and drive us back. I spent every summer from the time I was 8 till I was 16 with her. (My dad was living with her.)
I am so sorry Graceanne, and so very much here for you (now that I am sober again and able to read and make sense of things - I apologize for not being that way last night.) Your Grandmother sounds like she was an incredibe woman. thank you for sharing this story about her. :rose: :rose: :rose: Neon

Damn attorneys! You know you're in a courtroom that is electronically recorded through government-purchased (read that, "low bid") microphones. You know that those microphones have a limited pickup range. Why must you insist on wandering about the courtroom a la Perry Mason to make your pathetic little speeches? Don't you want your deathless oratory recorded for the edification of all posterity? :: insert puking smiley here ::

Thank you. And don't worry about it. You're allowed to have a life outside of lit.

My hair is officially "long" again- I switched from pinning it up in a messy twist, to using chopsticks to pin it up in a messy bun, today...
