LOL

I've always known he was smart (he's 12, BTW); it's different finding out he's four deviations above "average", and because of that, he's "technically learning disabled" as the normal schools are unable to meet his educational needs.
:(

I had a similar situation with my son from pre-school onward. His pre-school teacher unfortunately found his mental capabilities a negative and wanted him kept back from starting school 'to teach him a lesson for being so smart' as she put it. Fortunately, the educational authorities she had to get the OK from didn't agree and actually reported her for discriminating against an above average child. We struggled with it throughout school with the exception of a handful of teachers who saw his potential and were delighted, if a bit humbled, at having an opportunity to help him challenge his brain in productive ways. I wasn't impressed with the psycholigist he saw though as all he and his team were interested in doing were to test his IQ to see just how brilliant he was, not helping him to understand and find ways to manage his life and interract with others his own age.

Many years down the track, we are finally finding ways to help him in terms of socialising and utilising his abilities in ways which are positive. It has been a long road, and it seems I had to come to Europe to have it recognised he needed help beyond what I was capable of giving him at the time and under the circumstances, but it is nice to finally understand the whole picture beyond the 'what a genius he is' comments we used to get. LOL, now it seems where ever he goes to interract and help out, the mention of leaving and moving on results in panic among those who not only are stunned by his capabilities, but also admire him for who he is as a person and how he conducts himself. Unfortunately, all he can see is that he still does not speak the language, though it seems that also is not exactly as he sees it in his perfectionist mind.

Sir_Winston thank you thank you THANK YOU! I checked the link you gave, and there is an IB programme in his town, set up for both middle and high school levels. The T&G Charter school they're trying to get him into is expanding into the 7th grade (they've stopped at 6th up to this point), so here's me being a Mom and already starting to worry about what the hell he will do for high school. I'll forward the information onto his father, tonight.

Neon, it's not so much that getting information is like pulling teeth, it's that I'm not getting it directly from the school psychologist/counselors/special ed team in real time like my ex is. We're having to rely on emails/phone calls when he has a few quiet moments (not knowing what questions to ask isn't a very big help, either).

Cat, thank you for sharing about your son. I've always worried about my boy... he's just so... different. His mind is such a blessing, and I've always been scared to death it would one day become a curse. How do you push a child like that to reach their potential, without pushing so hard they burn out?

I'm still a babbling mommy mess... LOL

For me it was about not pushing. He was already under enough pressure from people who resented his gift, and his own perfectionist expectations of himself which he still is struggling with and means he is never satisfied with what he does...it can always be better in his mind. I encouraged both children in their pursuit of knowledge, tried to present unbiased views and information when asked, and didn't block avenues to seeking knowledge. Unfortunately, his intellect is part of a more serious problem which he is now learning to live with and understand, and hopefully will find where he fits in the world. So these days it is a matter of counter balancing no pressure support with firm encouragement when he begins to allow his own expectations to cripple his reality. F has been wonderful in handling this, being supportive, and keeping us from caving in when it all gets on top of me or my son.

Wow. Congrats and good luck. I know what you mean, actually. My sister's son has similar problems. My sister is doing math with him at home, cause what they're doing in his classroom is no where NEAR where he is. He's so bored he's constantly in trouble, and doesn't do his homework (it's boring, mom). They won't put him in TAG, cause he's not getting good grades, even though his teacher says he should go into TAG. (FYI, my sister has him multiplying triple didgits, and he's 9.)

I also want to say how much I love my daughters school. She goes to a charter school that puts kids in a class that challenged them, despite age. The classes are very fluid. Just cause she's in 2nd grade doesn't mean she stays in that classroom - they'll move her to the third grade (for example) for reading. Still she's about halfway through the fourth grade reading book, and is doing beginning fourth grade math. :D My teacher told me if she wasn't sick so much, and missed so much school, that she'd have been suggesting she skip a grade. :nana:

I hope this works out...pleeeeease let this work out...please please please

As long as there's a slice of swiss cheese on the deli tray that is perversion, we will always have a low fat and delicious orgasm.

Note to self:

Give it up. God is never gonna let you win the lottery, it'd be like putting a bullet through your head.

I'm glad to have shared the information. IB is a great thing for the kids, IMNSHO, because it gives them the education they need and deserve, and an environment that gives them socialization not only with their academic peers but their age-group peers in the school they share (IB programs are in a "normal" school, alongside the regular students, and they can get involved in various elective classes, such as band, chorus, journalism, etc., where they have a great deal of interaction with the "regular" students). So I'm happy not only to have promoted a scholastic program in the public schools that I thoroughly approve of, but especially to have given you some information that may be helpful to you and your son.

I hate hate hate writing code, but I love it when I finally figure it out.

Isn't it a great feeling of accomplishment when you see the page and it looks right and all the links work? Totally worth the pain in ass of writing code.

Whatever "it" is, we hope it's not broken, too. :rose:

I just got my kids new bikes at Walmart. My daughter was riding hers and the FUCKING PEDDLE FELL OFF. It's fucking stripped - on a two week old bike. My daughter fell off right on her elbow. Luckily she was wearing her helmet cause she also hit her head. If it's broken, Walmart is paying the goddamn bill.

I'm mostly waiting for K to get home and ask his opinion on whether I should take her to the ER.

i'm scared, and i'm lonely and i just wish you were here.

It kills me that i need you..

I hope she is okay!!

After replacing 3 POS Wal-Mart bikes in 18 months I finally bit the bullet and bought my daughter a Trek bike. It was spendy but she has put it through hell for 2 years and it is still going strong. Of course, with WM bikes half the problem is a slack-jawed 17 year old who would rather be anywhere but there is putting them together.

If that's the problem I'll just ask for the parts andput it together myself.

Oh my, I am sitting here with the most gorgeous black creature sitting beside me...the new Canon EOS 400d dSLR he bought for me today. :nana: LOL, I have put the battery on charge, attached the lense and strap, and find I am just so in awe of it I am afraid to pick it up and start playing. Guess once I read some of the downloaded manual (the supplied ones were in Dutch, French, and Spanish despite the sales staff saying there was one in English  ) I will feel a little braver. The anticipation is delicious. :cattail:
