the trip I'm planing is an 8 hour flight after a 6 hour drive to chicago. Or I could fly locally and it's I think an hour or two to chicago and then a long ass lay over, not to mention even with gas prices I save $200 by driving directly to chicago.

Wench..don't discount the cost of parking at the airport. Depending on where you are that can be HUGE.

edited to add..what I mean is parking at the smaller airports is usually much cheaper, maybe even free. It normally costs $75-$200 more to fly out of my dinky airport. But, parking is free, you can get there 30 mins before the plane leaves and still be okay, and security takes about 2 minutes. It's about a 50 yard walk from the parking area to the terminal and there is only 1 gate. LOL If I go to the big airport about 2 hours away it costs $7/day to park, I have to get to the airport at least 2 hours (preferably 3) before flight time I can get through the security checkpoint in time, and I am stressed out by the time I get to the gate. You may find it to be worth a few extra bucks to be more relaxed on such a long trip. And yes, I do understand being short of cash..but this is a very important trip for you!

Also..keep checking the online ticket outlets, you may be surprised. I recently took a trip during which I had to change planes in Atlanta. My mother began her trip in Atlanta (we were traveling together to the same place on the same flight) but my ticket cost $50 less!

Last time I parked at O'Hare's long term parking lot, it cost about $13 per day. One way around that rate would be to stay at one of the smaller hotels near the airport that offer free parking for guests. If your trip can reasonably include an overnight near O'Hare, staying someplace that will keep your car for free could save a small fortune if you plan to have to park for several days.
