Okay... it's officially hot as hell in Texas.

A playground in a suburb of Dallas, spontaniously combusted last week; the school security camera caught it on tape.

Apparently the cushioning material on the playground was a engineered wood mulch, and because of all the heavy rains earlier in the summer, it was still wet deep down. We've [finally] had 100+ temps over the last week, and the combination of heat, oxygen, and damp mulch was pefect enough to raise the temperature of the inside of the mulch layer and it burst into flames.

Nope - school's out and there weren't any neighborhood kids on the playground. The school district decided this week to spend $200,000 to replace all the cushioning surfaces on every playground in the district, ASAP.

The same thing can happen in compost piles if they aren't turned frequently enough, because a high moisture level + heat + oxygen = overcooked (combustable) compost. My father grew up on a farm in Nebraska, and I remember him telling stories when I was little, of having to check the temperatures on the grain silos when he was a kid, because every so often a farmer in the community would have a silo (literally) explode because of the exact same thing.

It can happen to hay barns, too, if the hay's not allowed to dry enough before being baled. Hay is really unstable, and most people who keep animals try not to have more than just a few bales in the same building with their animals. The bulk of the hay is kept in a separate building to keep disasters from happening. It's kind of scary, if you think about it.

I've heard of it in compost piles. The rotting vegetables put out a LOT of oxygen, and heat. Plus, put your hand near a compost pile, even in winter, and it's warm.

I've never heard of it in wood mulch, although I guess it makes sense. Wood rots, too. lol
