It’s also good to invent ways for your pet to work for their food by solving a puzzle, or by putting the food into a special container that makes them work at extracting it when you’re going to be away for a while. It keeps them active and occupied. Plenty of water and ready access to the outdoors via a pet door (when possible) is optimal.

He can open the door himself and often I find it so, didn't realise he was in when I shut it this time, he must have been fast asleep.

There's like a cubby hole thingy in the other bedroom full of stuff and I got a little brass hook lock on there to keep him out...he knows how to lift the hook out of the loop with his paw. He's a total dick and endlessly entertaining.
