The Jig is up

Unfortunately, we can't count on Box to "get" these sorts of concepts.

We already do all those things.

That's the point.

Garbage is picked up for a fee.

All socialism is for a fee....

Children have been taught to read for the last 150 years or so.

Mostly by public schools....socialism.

Personally, I learned in 1944 and 1945.

Was it ever by anyone other than a private for profit institute?

SOCIALISM!!!

There has never been a time in US history when the gov. wasn't fixing bridges.

Doesn't change the fact that we have a fuck ton that need to be fixed and conservative Republicans seem to think that's evil socialism.

Depends on where you live. I pay for mine to be picked up. About a mile up the road in the city limits it's covered by taxes.

Public schools in the US started in the 1780's. Public colleges started in 1862.

A private company picks up my garbage--for a fee. But the list of combining for mutual benefit social services paid for by taxes in the United States just goes on and on (e.g., roads, defense) and is enough to serve the point that socialism is here and has been to some extent for a good long time.

Communities working to solve problems for the benefit of all is not in and of itself, socialism. We'll keep it simple so everyone, even the unaffected, can understand here.

Not that it really makes a difference to you point but do do they have competition or did you guys just trade government monopoly for a geographic one? I mean I imagine you could if you were so inclined drive your own damn trash to the landfill. But if if you if Oscar was consistently late could you hire Cookie Monster?

It is if they all pitch in. in most cases paid for by taxes.

There are at least three private-business trash companies that compete for business where I am, which is the county, two blocks from the city limits, where the city has a monopoly on picking up the trash.

Well, yes, that's a definition of what socialism is--as long as the solution they come up with is managed by some level of government. If their solution is to bring in a private company, then, no, that's not socialism. Who provides your public schools, your highway maintenance, your police protection, your national defense? You do that yourself or contract with a private company to have it done for you?

Guess who's caught up in socialism, RU. :D

Wow. That is interesting. Over all good deal?

We don't pay all that much (especially when we know that our daughter, who lives on top of a mountain, has to drive her trash down to a county landfill); the service is good, because there's competition there; and it's a one-stream process--no need to separate out the trash in any way.

Communities working to solve problems for the benefit of all is not in and of itself, socialism.

If that solution involves taxation and or regulation that is exactly what socialism is.

Sorry to burst your bubble but socialism doesn't mean "liburhul shit FOX told me to hate" no matter how badly you wish it was.

Fuck that would be nice out here.

I bet California makes it impossible for anyone not a billionaire with years to burn waiting to get a licence to do that LOL

Probably. But I get the impression that Pilot lives just on the edge of the boonies.

Umm, no. I live two blocks from the edge of a major university in a super-wealthy town claiming hometown status of more U.S. presidents than any other.

My bust. When you mentioned your daughter needing to drive her own trash I assumed she was just a tad bit further out than you.

My daughter does live in the sticks, but, like two-thirds of the people living around her, she works in downtown Washington, D.C., so she isn't really an "in the sticks" person--she just tolerates a two-hour commute (but she lives in a house that would be $1.5 million if it were an hour closer to D.C.).

Yeah, my son was commuting for two hours until a year ago too--in a different area of the country. (But then, my commute once was through field of sniper fire, so I guess everything is relative.)

Must have been some shitty snipers.

That's insane.....

I hear people in the bay sometimes talk about that kinda commute too.

were you riding with Hillary?

LOL. You Norcalers. A 2 hour commute isn't unusual for folks around me. Lots of us still actually work in LA or San D. It's not nearly as bad as it once was mind you, when I first moved out here (or my parents more accurately at the time) NOBODY actually worked here.

Now the snipers part is insane.

Not entirely insane. Although it's rare, snipers do sometimes shoot at vehicles going by on the freeway. Did you ever hear about Melvin Black?

No, I was living in Bangkok during the bloody one-year aftermath of the 6 October 1976 coup, when the city was under a "shoot-on-sight" curfew but yet I had to get to the embassy to file reports on the status of the coup. Thanks for asking. What were you doing for the year following 6 October 1976? Thinking up snide comments?

Yea...I think that's just big ass cities.

Still pretty absurd.

I like that there is never traffic for anything and the only thing you have a hard time finding parking for around here are the farmers markets and ganja/reggae festivals.

Now the snipers part is insane.

It's not so bad once you get over the fact they are there.

Honestly I had not heard of him but that doesn't make it any less insane at least from my stand point. I mean there are places on this Earth where Warlords might waltz in kill all the men, rape all the women and force the kids to join up. That doesn't make it less insane to me.

Yeah big ass cities. Especially the ones that get to expensive to live in. And yeah finding parking for a new movies or when a big event happens is a chore and a half and inspiration to either a) not go opening night or b) find an excuse to stay there all goddamn day and show up way before anything. C) have someone you hate drop you off.

I guess. I mean I know there were various snipers and roadside bombs when I was in Iraq/Kuwait but the closest I ever got to action was we could hear gunfire once and were told to be on alert. And then we went back to Halo.
