I didn't notice this until neon quoted it.

Have you considered slimfast in the morning? It's got plenty of calories, so you'll have plenty of energy, but it's also got a small appetite suppressant, which might help you keep from just STARVING between breakfast and lunch.

Also, slimfast tastes better

its an idea.... i usually have a bowl of cereal (of the non-sugary variety) and skim milk. im cautious about wieght loss things like slim fast becuase not only can the get pricey, but i have had some icky metablolism problems in the past that i am afraid to screw up again (another reason i began to eat breakfast). also, im not trying to lose weight, just not to gain weight.

on another note, i went rollerblading last night for the first time in years. i forgot how much fun it was.

God that sounds yummy Netzach. Damn you even get a stud on your picnics ;)

What about posting healthy recipes? I have found a few (mostly pork based as it's very low cal) that are extremely yummy lately and perhaps if we pool up some nice recipes, we can find alternatives to those OMG I WANT TACO BELL NOW days (yes, I have those days, about once a month...there's not a thing that Taco Bell serves that's good for me :p ).

yoga 1.5 hours walk to and fro .5 miles ea. way.

Half chicken on cranberry orange toast, big Iced tea.

If you want taco hell or chipotle or crap of that ilk, I do this:

1 large can tomato juice (I like Dei Fratelli, lo-salt)
1-2 chicken breasts (opt)
1 can navy beans (they're pretty digestion friendly as beans go)
cilantro
juice of one lime
serrano pepper (opt)

Throw all the non lime/cilantro/bean ingredients together and simmer - when the chicken is cooked, add the beans till they heat - go on till you can pull the chicken apart, THEN add lime juice and cilantro and kill the heat. Serve it hot but not horribly hot.

Let me tell you the secret to my "body transformation." Weight loss is not the issue. Feeling good and looking good is where it's at. Weight loss is the by product. I don't care how much I weigh if I feel and look good. I could never do diets, and it showed. Then I did a few life changes and the everything changed.
1) I eat well. No white sugars or white flour and limit fat but DON"T eliminate it.
2) Cardio (sex is fun to fill this) and weight lifting. Not for bulky muscles, just to tone. And muscles burn fat.
3) Never get hungry, I eat six meals a day. When I get hungry I want to binge.
4) Drink water.
5) And BEST OF ALL, have 1 day a week where you can eat everything you want. Knowing that I can do this allows me to sacrifice the sugar during the week. On my free day I can do it all. Since you eat well 6 out of 7 days, your body will now how to get rid of the junk and not assimilate it. By doing this, my body doesn't go into starvation mode like happens when you diet.

Doing these things allowed me to go from frumpy bottom to a nice body. I still don't care how much I weigh. I just know now that all my health problems went away and I went from being able to run a mile in 14 minutes to now being able to do it in 7, and I hate running.

I'm writing this one down and using it. I think it'd be really good with a bit of low-fat cheese and sour cream and some chopped jalapenos. I love spicy food. :p

i am SO happy to see everyone posting and doing well.

Yesterday was a bad eating day for me. Let's just leave it at that.

So far, so good today in that i ate breakfast and a small lunch and am planning a healthy dinner.

i need to stop compulsively weighing myself though. There is no need for me to get on the scale every day, and i find myself doing that a lot recently.

SirW...you're doing great with remembering to take your meds!!!! :nana:

Hottie, How about try doing a weigh in once a week? It really does help if you can make yourself do it. Otherwise you are making choices by the scale which changes as the day goes by. Maybe pick a day and time and try to stick to it? I do this Friday mornings by 6 a.m. so that I'm really comparing a week of "work".

LOL - the last two mornings, as I hit Lit for the first time each day, *just that* has been a reminder... Not sure how long that will last, but ... <shrug> I'll take it as it is; it's better than seeing (and ignoring - or seeing and having my eyes slide right past) my little plastic week of daily pills container. Thanks for the encouragement, y'all. :rose:

HM, Hisbabydoll is right - weighing more than once a week is counterproductive due to the daily - even hourly - changes our bodies go through (which are worse for women than men - sorry). The last time I made a serious effort to lose weight, I went Atkins - at first, I was checking my weight daily, or several times during a day  before I realized that I was just driving myself (more) crazy and went to weighing only on Sunday mornings as soon as I got up. That gave me a much truer picture of how I was doing, especially since Sunday was my "cheat day."

HisBabyDoll, and SirW...i know you are both right. Like i said it's becoming an obsession with me, like i don't feel like i am losing fast enough, so i have to keep checking. i think i'll put the scale away in the closet, instead of seeing it every time i use the Master bath, and see if that helps at all.

Throwing out refined sugar and white flour and NOT bingeing on rice, potato, anything and everything you can think of to replace what you miss is probably the fastest and best ticket. It's how I lost the 30 pounds I have stupidly put back on - sugar is an addictive SOB and I guess I'm not the alkie who can have the glass of wine at Xmas.

Yeah, those sound like awesome add-ons. M was so crazy about this it was gone in two days. I think lime and cilantro could make cardboard taste good.

Don't know if it will work for everyone, but if I find myself craving food, especially nibbling, it is a good sign I am lacking iron. My mother put me onto this and it does seem to be right because if I eat iron rich foods, or even quicker if I take supplements, I get to a point where I crave nothing at all, even chocolate.

My routine is usually an omelet in the morning (with 2% milk) and some fruit. I have a healthy snack by mid-morning (usually 120 cal or less...fruit if I can, a fruit/grain bar like Nutri-grain if I can't). A low cal but filling lunch, generally consisting of a chicken sandwich (whole grain wheat bread, home baked chicken), some fruit, no sugar jello pudding, etc) with another mid-afternoon snack similar to the mid-morning one. Dinner is a bit bigger due to not everyone in the house being on the same meal plan but we keep it as healthy as possible. One recipe we've found and love is this one:

Cider Braised Pork Chops

4 center cut pork chops, cut 3/4" thick
2 tsp vegetable oil
1 cup cider or apple juice
2 medium cooking apples, cored and cut into wedges (use red skinned cooking apples such as Jonathan, Gala, or Braeburn)
1 medium onion, cut into thin wedges
1/4 tsp sage, crumbled

1. trim fat from chops if necessary, salt and pepper if desired (I usually omit the salt). In large skillet, brown chops in oil, about 4-5 minutes per side. Spoon off fat.

2. Add cider, apples, onion, and sage. Cover and simmer 25 minutes or until chops are tender (careful with this as the apples will disintegrate!)

3. Transfer chops and apple mixture to serving platter. Simmer pan juices until slightly thickened, about 3-5 minutes. Spoon over chops and apples.

Serves 4

Per Serving:
294 calories
21g carbohydrates
28g protein
9g fat
5g fiber
79mg cholesterol
90mg sodium (less if you omit salt)

This is a super tasty dish!!

My eating habits aren't that bad but I am sugar and flour's bitch. I think I could give up one at a time but not sure I could do both. Maybe if I ditched the sugar first and got settled into that I could ditch the flour as well.

Thanks for posting your list. It's full of common-sense, easy-to-incorporate changes.

I have been doing the South Beach diet since January 1st. It probably has been the healthiest change I have ever done. I am eating 4 1/2 cups of veggies every day, eliminated all refined carbs and sugars - it doesn't feel like a diet nor do I treat it that way. I have lost 31 pounds, my goal was another 7 pounds and then will consider doing another 5 pounds. I didn't expect to meet my goal until the end of the year so I am pleased with the results so far. All of this has been thru dietary as I haven't been able to do any exercise other than isometric.

Things I have learned - water is critical so make sure you are drinking 8-10 glasses. Try using a salad plate versus a dinner plate - trick your brain into thinking the portion is bigger. It pays to measure out serving sizes until you get reacquainted with what an actual serving size is. Living in the land of supersized servings, it is shocking to realize that a typical pasta dish is usually 4 servings. Counting calories sucks but the reality is it is good to have an idea of what you are taking in and if you don't exercise, 3500 calories = pound so you have to figure out how to cut that out over the time period. It is good to eat basically every 3 hours (3 meals and 2 - 3 snacks). Snackwise protein is best (doesn't cause carb cravings and doesn't cause sugar changes) .

I am a foodie so I will gladly post some recipes at some point. :)

i think your mom is right, because my last pregnancy made me severely anemic and i find when i take my iron pills regularly i don't get the "munchies" as much.

i gave up refined sugar 90% before i even attempted flour, and potatoes, and white rice. Sugar is still harder for me. i've never been much of a bread/starch eater. (i allow myself pasta once a week, because this Italian girl just can't do without.)

Any flour lovers out there, just substitute wheat floor for white. You can find bread, pasta, tortillas, just about everything except donuts in wheat. And most of the time you won't notice a difference. Also try brown rice. The main thing is to eat less processed, unnatural food and more things the way mother nature intended. No wonder there is so much cancer out there with all the perservatives, dies, additives, chemicals and who knows what else, that the body now processes these days. You have to put good fuel into the body in order for it to run right.

Whole wheat pasta really doesn't taste the same a regular pasta. i eat whole wheat everything else, when i do eat bread...and Krispy Kreme makes whole wheat donuts.
