The Let's Help Each other Get Healthier Thread!!!

LOL, I can't believe they make whole wheat donuts. That is too funny. Leave it to corporate american to dream of that.

"Donut?"

"No thanks. I'm trying to watch my weight."

"But it's whole wheat."

"Oh jeez, then give me 4."

I don't always eat the way I should, or much at all, but for the past two months, I've been going for a walk everyday or night as the case may be. Where I live it's hilly and humid, so that's a nice work out depending on how fast you walk and how far.

Now I need to work on spot exercises for those areas I really am not ever happy with.

I plan to start that soon.

Spot work out is kinda a myth. When I lost weight, I lost it everywhere. The body draws from everywhere. Even my rings became loose. (And my fingers look so good now, lol) When I started lifting weights my abs became rock hard. Unfortunetly they were encased in a nice soft cushy layer and you couldn't tell. When that finally melted away, then you could tell.

And most importantly, since this is a BDSM thread, remember when you are spanking somebody, be sure to do it for at least 3 times a week and for no less then 20 minutes. Be sure and check your heart rate and keep it at a cardio level for the full 20 minutes. And before you untie your sub after that 20 minutes, stretch and have at least a 5 minute cool down period.

I always do cardio and spot work on the spots I want to target. That's what I enjoy doing.

Now this is the sort of stuff that REALLY fits in here!!!

Any kind of exercise is good IMO. Cardio is a necessity, as is weightlifting/resistance training and flexibility, if you want a well rounded exercise profile, but really, if you're going from being sedentary to being active in any way, than that's awesome. I'm doing the whole enchilada because we're focusing on changing my body in serious ways so that I can compensate for gradually weakening joints, but I feel the consequences - first I had to stop shoulder stuff because of my rotator cuffs, now they're okay but a ligament inside my knee was pulled - if I didn't have a trainer and a physio with ultrasound therapy I'd be an unhappy camper.
Right now I'm just happy to be getting back into the swing of things with minimal discomfort (they do tend to kick things up a notch just when you're feeling comfortable) but I need motivation on my diet. Hell, I need motivation just to officially weigh in again.
I have been trying to eat more healthily but now that I am working out hunger is an issue. Any tips? And yes, I drink my water!

yoga 1.5 hours walk to and fro .5 miles ea. way.

Half chicken on cranberry orange toast, big Iced tea.

If you want taco hell or chipotle or crap of that ilk, I do this:

1 large can tomato juice (I like Dei Fratelli, lo-salt)
1-2 chicken breasts (opt)
1 can navy beans (they're pretty digestion friendly as beans go)
cilantro
juice of one lime
serrano pepper (opt)

Throw all the non lime/cilantro/bean ingredients together and simmer - when the chicken is cooked, add the beans till they heat - go on till you can pull the chicken apart, THEN add lime juice and cilantro and kill the heat. Serve it hot but not horribly hot.

Mmm. I think I'm going to tweak this a tad. Actual low salt diced canned tomatoes, maybe some red onion, more of a fresh salsa-ish taste with the beans and chicken. Maybe keep the chicken as breasts and grill. But it still sound yummy either way.

I forgot to mention that this is supposed to be a soup, and cover it when you cook it!

Your way sounds way better as a solid version. Sounds good.

On the topic of wheat - whole is still something I think people may want to evaluate. We've based most of our diet on things that actually the vast majority of people are allergic to and don't know it, and the normal establishment is going to tell you you're crazy, etc if you avoid it. I know that I personally have felt best when essentially lopping the bottom off the "food pyramid" and making the wide base into veggies, cooked and not, and fruit, cooked and not. It's really really REALLY hard to break away from. You think "holy crap what can I eat?" but it is possible - the basis of everything in western diet being wheat is let's face it, NOT serving the post-industrial world well.

Rice was my gateway drug back to full on sugar and bread. I'm off it again.

See..that's what i am worried about...Rice being the "gateway drug." i'm doing too good off of sugar to go back to it.

Yes, it's crack food to me. I need to cut my pyramid short like you suggested.

Ok. I did not drink any slimfast this morning. I had to get up early and take my sister and her kids to their swim lessons. I forgot. Miss bought me some french fries, and I splurged on a double cheeseburger. That upset my tummy enough that I haven't eaten at all since. *gag* Dinner's in the oven, but I'm not so sure. I just want some iced tea.

Oh, and I drank three bottles of water today. No one had unsweetened iced tea. But I'm more hydrated than normal.

My father regularly cooks rice for us and puts half a cup at a time in baggies in the freezer. Ditto with noodles and spaghetti sauce.

It's much easier to control portions that way. I try not to eat any fresh, because I have the same problem.

Good for you with the water.

Have you thought about meal replacement bars? I have a) canned meal replacement when I'm in a hurry b) powdered meal placement for when I have more time c) meal replacement bars for when I'm in a big hurry. I always keep the cans in the fridge and bars in the cupboard and they can go with me. That way I can grab one and eat/drink at stoplights on those days when I don't have time to have it here. Another option is a travel mug if you have enough time to mix it, or get the packets (I use Breakfast Anytime!) and stop at a drive-thru for a carton of milk and a spoon. I recommend keeping a long dessert spoon in your car for that one, though. There's lots of options!
I mostly have them on the way to workouts now. The sugars give me instant energy and the protein the long-lasting kind. But they are my breakfast during the school year.

It's really hard to find meal replacement bars that are fiber free and taste good.

I don't know about bars, but muscle milk is pretty tasty.

Have you considered that raw food diet? From what I hear it's not at all what you think.

I am currently going for no fast food - at all - for a month. I'm two weeks in and successful - all I've had are Booster Juice smoothies, which consist of juice, berries, and yogurt - and they're my after workout treat. My parents have brought me restaurant food but no McDonald's, etc. The exception is juices/drinks and salads, but so far I haven't even had those. Once that is done I'm going for no white sugar for a month, in addition to the fast food. We'll see how far I get. Ideally the next one would be no white flour.

Hmm. I shall see about that.

ETA: Okay, going no farther than my own kitchen, the bars do indeed nave 2g of fibre, but the Breakfast Anytime! packets, which you just mix with a cup of 2% milk, have 0g dietary fibre. Or you could do skim or soy or whatever but it would change the values. But not fibre, I'd think. Do you drink milk?

I'm going to bitch about my health for a moment that's in no way related to my weight.

In June 2005, I took a tumble off a horse and dislocated my right shoulder. Since then, it's been very easy to pop out of place, probably dislocating itself 40 or so times. I've had x-rays and MRIs, and, while the only way to fix it is surgery, none of the surgeons I've seen have wanted to fix it because "it doesn't hurt you all the time." No, it doesn't, but who wants to go around constantly in fear that they're going to dislocate their shoulder reaching for a glass or something and be in excruciating pain for a week or so while it knits back together?

Anyway, I was dropped off my father's health insurance at the beginning of this month because the company he works for changed their policy. I've just been pretty much crossing my fingers and hoping that nothing happens to me.

I have a horse show tomorrow. I was down at the barn today, clipping the three mares I'm going to take to the show, and succeeded in dislocating this damn shoulder TWICE in 10 minutes. The first time, I did it while reaching up to touch a horse on the neck, and the second time, I did it while tossing a bridle into the front seat of the truck. Not exactly over-exerting myself here, ladies and gentleman. A shoulder's not supposed to do that.

It hurts so badly right now that I'm afraid to breathe. It's back in place for the moment, but I hate to move for fear that I'll dislocate it yet again. I'm 99% certain that I ripped my rotator cuff today when it popped out because I can't lift my arm over my head now, which means when I'm finally able to have surgery, I'll have to have TWO separate "fixes" in two different places. My shoulder is a mass of exploded tissue, and I'm right-handed.

I really hate the American health care system right now. I'm a student with no job and no prospects for one (my bachelor's degree's not worth the paper it's written on), especially for a job that offers insurance. I doubt I'm eligible for Medicaid, though if I were a lazy-ass who refused to work and wanted to sit on my ass all the time and refuse to try to better myself, I could get all the goddamn government handouts I wanted. Furthermore, even if some miracle job did come along, the insurance probably wouldn't cover the surgery because it'd be considered a pre-existing condition. I am not happy.

Anybody got any advice for me? I'm going to that horse show come hell or high water tomorrow. (Horsewomen are tough!) I don't have any more pain meds and no way to even get a prescription for them at this point. What am I supposed to do? Drink a fifth of Jack Daniels and hope for the best?
