The Let's Help Each other Get Healthier Thread!!!

bumpity bump

I just joined self.com to use the weight loss tools on the site. I'm doing a jump start plan to drop 8 lbs. I'm going to try and do three cardio sessions this week, and two strength training sessions, as well as the eating plan.

I'm actually kind of excited. With all the bad stuff I've had over this "holiday period"... *thinks back to last weekend's party especially*... I havent gained weight. Granted, I've only lost about a pound overall during this time and it's yo-yo'd... I think I did ok.. but I really cant wait to get back to my routine....

Ok, the holiday season is over. As soon as the cookies are gone our house will be sweets free, again, and I'll be back on my diet. :nana: To tell the truth I'm looking forward to how well I feel on a liquid diet.

Finally got myself to the gym today, after a 10 day break  What with Christmas, speedway on every 3rd night since Boxing Day, and fitting in dialysis, I just haven't felt like it (too tired) or just run out of time.

I managed an hour's workout including treadmill, cross trainer, rowing machine and stationary bike, plus 10 mins of upper body weights. I'm hoping to get there again on Friday cos I have a training session on Monday and my new trainer is quite a sadist  ;)

I'm joining in. It will make me feel more responsible.

I already eat very well. My main problem is wine. LOVE wine. If I could just stop at that one glass with dinner, there would be no problem. But, it's not just the one glass, and as much as I love it, it's just nothing but empty calories.

Thus, all the wine has been taken out of my house.

My new year's resolution is to get back down to where I was weight wise when I left my husband about 1.5 years ago.

So, that's 15 pounds I need to lose - okay, 10 really, but damn, I'd be happy with 15.

I've already exercised the last three days. I do strength training every other day and then cardio every day for atleast 30 minutes. I also do yoga every evening as well to help me kind of mellow out (and to take the place of the wine).

So excited to be joining the rest of you and support you all as well! :D

too late?

Is it too late to jump into this thread? I am going to need all the support going to achieve my weight loss target. Here is briefly why.

I have a lifelong back problem which leaves me having to take very strong morphine based pain killers daily. These cause lots of vile side effects the worst of which is just "feeling lousy" a lot of the time.
I have recently (last year) packed up smoking after over 30 years as a smoker.
I replaced smoking with eating loads of sweets/chocolate
I am now about 3 stone (42 lbs) overweight for my height of 5'7" and have set myself a target weight of losing 30 lbs in 6 months.
Because of the back problem, running is out, though I can and do walk the dog for at least 40 - 60 minutes per day. I have tried to do this "more vigorously" though this can cause me to be laid up with back pain, so have to take each day as it comes.

So, I am going to try and cut out sweets/chocolate completely.

The other thing I am experimenting with is to use small dumbbell type weights to try and build up upper body strength, and hopefully convert some of the fat to muscle :)

Lastly I am going to try and eat more fruit/veg....I have been a lifelong habitue not so much of junk food, but stuff like sausage and mash, fish and chips (ie not burgers and pizza)....very little fresh fruit and veg.

OK sorry if this rambled on.....here is my currrent weight/height, almost 14 stone (198 lbs) height 5'7" and my target is going to be to lose at least 30 lbs by July.
Would welcome any good wishes/hugs/magic weight loss thoughts from anyone else involved, and would like to send same to all of you also trying!

Hi Bandelero!

Did you consider swimming?

It's usually a good sport if you have trouble with your back.

Good luck!

It's never too late to join in.

I would also talk to your doctor about what level of activity you can have and not do further harm to your back. Swimming is good (as was mentioned).

ANYONE is welcome to join us here. (i LOVE that this thread took off so well...)

i actually managed to lose three lbs in the past two and a half weeks so i am down to 158.

You know what's REALLY fucking amazing?????? i am HALF the person i used to be. That's fucking incredible. :nana: :nana: Sorry..i just realized that this morning and i'm a tiny bit excited about it.

Thanks Fi!

When i went into the hospital to have my youngest son, in Nov 06, i was over 300lbs. Granted, i had a "cheater's start" because i left the hospital 40lbs lighter, but i have accomplished a lot in the past 15 months. i'll never be "model thin." i'm "hippy" to begin with, and after 2 C-sections, i will always have a little belly...but i am ok with how i look right now. If someone else doesn't like it, ehhh...that's on them. i feel sexier/more attractive than i ever have and that's what matters.

(Of course, this could all change tomorrow and i'll be calling myself a whale again, but for now i will enjoy it.)

Ah, but I'm sure that in some very good ways you're now twice the person you used to be. :rose:

Many thanks for the warm welcomes...I probably won't be updating much as I am only intending to "weigh in" at most once a fortnight, but good, bad or same ol same ol, I shall post how well or badly, I manage to do.

I will always pop in to congratulate others who are trying the same thing, I know very well that it can be one of the most difficult things to do EVER....so heartfelt GRATS to you Hottie mama for the amazing start that you have already made, and Hey, you call yourself a whale all you want...Whales are without a doubt the most beautiful creatures in the sea!

damn

damn it all! I know I said I was only going to weigh in maybe fortnightly, but after my bath today, I couldn't resist jumping on the scale hoping to see if maybe just 1 or 2 pounds had dropped away.
Despite having had NO chocolate or sweets and generally eating smaller portions of ordinary meals, my weight has GONE UP by 6 lbs?!?!?!

So if anyone else here has dieted before, is this normal? Could it be that my weight is just going up from before stopping all the sweets etc, sort of like a follow through that needs time to slow down and reverse?

Basically I guess I am pretty disappointed to have not only seen no improvement in almost a week, but to have seen the reverse and a weight increase is even worse.

This is a typical days food for me atm:-
Breakfast
Small bowl of cereal with semi skimmed milk
2 cups of tea also with ss milk, no sugar

Lunch
Wholemeal roll with low fat spread and lean ham
2 cups tea

Dinner
Some sort of mixed salad with cooked meat and boiled potatoes
more tea

(I have also increased my daily exercise from 2 x 30 minute walks with my dog to 3 x 45+ minute walks and I have begun some barbell exercises.)

Can tea without sugar make you gain weight? I know I drink lots of it, but I always have.

Is this typical and could I still hope for the weight to come down when weeks rather than days have passed, or should I give it one more week and see a doctor?

1. water weight
2. period - coming soon?
3. I are you eating more volume because you've cut some of the fattier and thus more filling things? I might switch the potatoes at dinner out with a couple of ounces of cheese or a small handful of walnuts once in a while.
4. are you getting any more salt than you were before?

I would not be really alarmed at this point but keep going, it's amazing what happens when you break any kind of stasis.

Another thing is that muscle weighs more than fat. If you're excercising AND dieting, you're probably burning fat and gaining muscle. You should take a measurement of your upper arms, waist, bust/chest line, and upper thighs, then see if they're going down - cause that's the point, right? I personally wouldn't care if I weight 300 lbs, if I could fit in a size 5, ya know? So don't stress about the weight, pay attention to the size.

I am still gaining weight. I gained 4 lbs the last two weeks and two pounds before that and three before that. (I don't have a scale, but I get weighed every other week at the doctors). I don't eat enough to be gaining weight this consistently. I'm seriously considering calling the doctor and having my thyroid checked out. *grr*

Average woman (I know you are a man) needs 1200 calories to keep the metabolism going at sedentary - you aren't even close from looking at your list. Takes calories to lose calories and that is a hard one for people to figure out. Eat 3meals and 2 - 3 snacks a day - basically every 3 hours and get your metabolism reset. Right now your body is probably fighting you for every damn pound. Also you need to look at your serving sizes since calories DO count...lol.

Breads, Cereals, Rice, Pasta, and other Grains Group
* 1 slice bread or 1/2 bagel the size of a hockey puck.
* 1/2 cup cooked rice equals a cupcake wrapper.
* 1/2 cup pasta equals an ice cream scoop.

Fruit and Vegetable Groups
* One fruit and vegetable serving is equal to one piece the size of a tennis ball or 1/2 cup the size of a light bulb.

Meat, Chicken, Fish, Dry Beans and Peas, Eggs, and Nuts Group
* 3 ounces lean meat, chicken, or fish measures up to a deck of cards or a check book.

Dairy Group
* 1 ounce cheese equals about 4 dice.

Fats, Oils, and Sweets Group
* Use sparingly. For a teaspoon of fat, look to the tip of your thumb.

Sorry but diet and nutrition has been my damn focus officially for a year now so I have figured a few things out while I dropped a few pounds.

I am still gaining weight. I gained 4 lbs the last two weeks and two pounds before that and three before that. (I don't have a scale, but I get weighed every other week at the doctors). And you girly should get your thyroid checked out considering how your health is whacked out in other ways! ~hugs

oops I'm sorry. That lovely floral av was like very convincing cyber drag.

This is crazy. I've been working on cutting out some of the unnecessary carbs from my diet and it feels like I'm always hungry now. My body must be going through some odd kind of readjustment.

Sounds like your body is going through a detox basically. Always hungry can be resolved by eating every 3 hours, small protein based meals/snacks.

Going Public

Hi All -

I decided I could use some accountability in my weight loss campaign. So, I put a ticker in my sig, and thought I'd post in this thread. I'm using myfooddiary.com to track calories and nutrition, exercise and to track my progress. At the moment I'm not really exercising, due to problems with my knees and lower back. But, I'm also seeing a couple of orthopedic surgeons to deal with those issues. I have a long way to go, but I feel really proud of the weight I've lost so far! Hopefully I'll be able to help cheer you folks on to reach your goals as well.
