I have participated here in Lit for 4 months, actually submitted stories that have been well received.

Yesterday, reading a thread response by Og, Colly and others, I had a startling realization..... I write porn. Not really literature, no real social value, just good ol' stroke material. Porn! Erotica!

Now with that realization, I know if I add 60 cents to it, I can get a cup of coffee at a real cheap place..........

Here I thought I had talent in writing........ I guess I am just good at wanking material. God, that means I better get back to the text book writing for my real talents.

Do you write porn? Or do you believe it literature?

I can live with that and actually enjoy it!!!

Gee! You're lucky!

The cheapest place around here charges ten bits, and that's only a special rate when their dish washer is not functioning.

Me? I'm still aspiring to become a porn writer.

At the moment, I am only acceptable as a television writer, but I hope one day to be esteemed as a valuable member of society, just like you ;)

What I'm trying to figure out is, why would someone do this? I write mostly in the incest category. I'm hoping that I'm showing more than the hump and grind, but that maybe just wishful thinking.

If you bring enjoyment and provide an outlet for people's repressed fantasies, and if you do it with skill and artistry, who cares what the difference is? Isn't the essential difference between porn and erotica in the mind of the reader or viewer? If it's offensive to me, like having someone's schlong in my face every time I visit the AH forum, it's pornography and I put it on ignore. If it's my particular fantasy that's being explored and realized in an intriguing way, it's erotica.

For which I'm grateful. Thank you, writers.

If you do write porn and good wanking material then you should get high ratings, complimentary feedback and public comments. That counts as success in Literotica and is better than many authors do.

I don't write porn. Sometimes I don't even write erotica.

I want to write stories that arouse people not just sexually but also intellectually. Many of my works fail on the first aim. Some fail on both.

I'd like to write literature. What I do know is that since joining Literotica and the AH my writing skills have improved and I have to thank people of the AH and in the rest of Lit for their useful criticism and advice. This is a good place to play at being an author.

If you set your "good wanking material" in a plot with characters we believe in and want to know more about then you probably would be writing literature. What I have to do is put the "good wanking material" into my plots and story structure.

If what you write is popular then you have achieved something that many of us haven't.

And damned fine smut is is too. I'm ashamed of you for writing it, ashamed of me for reading it, and ashamed of Literotica for existing. Shame on us all.

Oh, the shame.

Og, you're a excellent and entertaining writer. i suspect that most writers of your caliber are focusing on Literotica because it's your best chance to actually be read. Not every writer at Lit is a writer. Many are one-handed typers, and the readers quickly learns the difference.

The stories at Literotica serve two entirely respectable purposes: they provide a way for serious writers to hone their skills and receive the feedback they seem to value, in a forum that is virtually guaranteed readers because it's essentially a porn site; they provide a safe, free way for repressed Bible Belt women to indulge their perverse sexual fantasies, and to eventually realize that it's not all that perverse to have sexual fantasies.

I can't tell you how surprised I was when I began peeking into the discussion boards and realized that there were people here who were regular writers at Lit but who had other interests, and were literate and funny and enjoyable to read and debate with on any number of topics. That was hugely comforting to me. It's when I stopped feeling guilty about my interest in porn. I still call it porn because I love having the freedom to read porn. I'm humoring myself when I call your stories or Dr. M's stories or Maths' or Perdita's or MountainMan's stories "porn," because it means I'm indulging in a bit of rebellion that I never dreamed I would do.

So humor me. It's not meant to be offensive when I say I read porn at Literotica. It's a celebration of my right as a grown-up to read whatever I like without feeling like a bad child.

I write stories. I prefer to think of them as stories with erotic content rather than erotic stories. Also perfer to think of them as eroptica rather than porn. Heck, I prefer to think of them as literature. All of which means zipo.

They are stories with explict sex scenes, geared to a predominantly feminine audience. Some respondants wirte to thank me for a wonderful story, to them it's literature. Some write to thank me for a great evening in bed with their vibes. To them it's erotica. Some write to thank me for getting them off, to them it's porn.

What you write isn't self defined, it's defined by those who read it. Like it or no, it will be defined differently by every different reader. Cest le vie.

Colly

(p.S. I know I mispelled that :) )

All of my lit. stories have been literary experiments. Every one of them has been a literary exercise set by me, for me. I have no idea whether you'd count it as porn or erotica. To me, they're still experiments, some successful, some not so successful.

p.s. Colly.. C'est la vie :rose:

Well...yes, it's porn...but it's no worse than other things...

...see, by some strange twist of fate I study political science. Since learning that one of the best definitions of politics is:

"La politica e' una putana" or in more colloquial speech - politics is a slut / whore / synonym of choice.

...so writing stuff with sex in is quite liberating, at least it doesn't pretend that "it did not have sexual relations with that woman"

Hasta la rivolucion siempre!

Pornesty is better than false honesty!

Thank you, Shereads... this is exactly how I feel about this site.

From my understanding, most people have fantasies whether they are willing to admit to it or not. This site provides a harmless outlet to people who otherwise couldn't indulge in them, regardless whether that "indulging" took place in "real life" or through reading.

I, too, have enjoyed reading the posts of the various authors here. Someday I hope I'll be able to actually submit a story and get some feedback... if I can get over being freaked out, that is <G>

I'm a failed writer because I'm too old to start over and haven't made my fortune at it yet. My only excuse is that I worked for years writing news and features, and even some TV like Quasi, very little published fiction. It's true that writing for mass media destroys your talent if you ever had any. I think I was a much better fiction writer in my twenties than I am now. The stuff used to pour out effortlessly back then, while now I've learned what Capote meant when he said: "It's like giving birth to a grand piano." Literotica is a place where I can work at dredging up skills I feel I've kept burried for too many years, and the exposure is promotional at the same time.

I've been writing and editing for almost thirty years and made my living at it for about 25 of those years, so I guess you could say I'm a serious writer. Writing fiction is a big change, however. I recently accepted a job as a tech support guy to pay the bills while I hone my skills as an erotic romance author. When I was doing nonfiction it was my only job. It frightens me to think how a huge corporation is going to react to having a radical freelancer sitting at one of its work stations.

Porn and erotica are words with specific meanings. Porn is art that depicts human sexual prostitution. Erotica is art that depicts human sexual love. I believe prostitution should be more tolerated than it is, even fully legalised, so I don't care which label people pin on a story I write. True 'literature' is seldom recognised during an author's lifetime. Almost all the great works of literature were popular fiction in their time. I feel sure the people who are creating the great literature of the 20th and now 21st centuries are currently writing genre fiction, and probably don't even realise their work is destined to have any impact other than making their mortgage payments, if that. So I don't lose sleep over whether I'm writing serious literature. My great dream is to make my fiction pay at least as well as my nonfiction did, so I can get back to Europe, as far away from the legacy of the Mayflower Puritans as possible. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying the online company of other rebellious intelects in the Lit AH, especially the ladies, of course.

A proper thread about writing at last

"Read. My. Sig."

I write stroke, I call it stroke because I rarely write anything after the orgasm.

If you want to make a reader feel sad/happy/thoughtful and they do, then you have accomplished what you set out to do.

So what is the difference if your intent is to make them horny?

The difference to me between 'practice' (which we do here at Lit)and 'writing' is that the writer can make you feel sad and happy and thoughtful and even horny in the same story (and get paid for it)

But there is another difference too. There is that kind of writer who will embody as much as they can of what we were taught in 'Eng. Lit.' at school. Themes, leif motif, imagery etc et (B/C average) cetera.

I never thought I'd actually learned anything from studying 'set works' but apparently I did, as I'm told it's what I have, even in my 'stroke'.

But that is not to say (as I am often want to repeat) that if you can't write it doesn't necessarily follow that you can't tell a good story.

i don't write porn how dare you insinuate that:( i write dirty stories:D  there is a difference.

porn is usually written by a proper author and all technically so, dirty stories are written by old sluts like me, or old wankers like............well i don't know who, giggle!! (well i do but i'm not saying:devil: :D )

we're all in it for the excitement of being a writer and having people read our stories.

i just checked my little offering, 41911 readers and 98 votes with 6 public comments, holy shit i'm famous!!

Of course you are, Lorri. It's not just the stories, the AV and the legend add a certain extra something. ;)

Just starting my legend........

Compared to the long timers here, I am just beginnng to start my legend....... without a sexy AV. Well then, Og's ain't all that sexy..... lol

Whether it is classified as erotica, porn, or my hope-literotica, I continue to put forth thoughts, and combine the thoughts with the words that present my story...

Onward, upward (pun intended) and full stroke ahead.....

Now where did I put my mental pictures..........
