The Manor

Ciara was already sitting front and center with her notebook ready, her hearing wasn't the best so she allways took the seats close anyway, she filled out the form while waiting for the proffessor to start talking, she noticed the boy from before close by. Her mind wandered a bit trying to figure out what the hell was wrong with men really but she soon returned to the form.

Dan sat close and filled in the forms quickly and wordlessly. He eyed the others, noting a girl among them. He eyed the professor wasnt he in some movie or another?

(OCC: the person in the photo is actually a history professor at Stanford)

"Well, I guess I'll get started, and whoever comes in will have to play catch up." He told everyone as he clicked the control for the lights. The room dimmed. Another click and the slide projector showed a beautiful manor house.

"This is Northwood Estate, home of a really old, really rich lady who is in Italy right now for her health. She's left some basic staff at the house, but they aren't there to wait on you hand and foot or to do your job for you." He leaned against the podium and clicked another slide, showing the entryway of the house, which included a magnificent stairwell and works of art on the three story entryways walls.

"The house is basically a lived in museum, and Mrs. Northwood has not had her collection cataloged in about two decades. There's been additions, subtractions, and possible damage to pieces. Her insurance company of course has records of what should be in the house, and has added new pieces to their files, but have been pressuring Mrs. Northwood for a new catalog for the last few years. She's not seen a need until recently, because her health is failing and her lawyer advised it would make donations and probate easier."

Another slide, of a three story library, marble busts nestled in among the books.

"Each of you will be bonded for one million dollars, if accepted, but in this room alone there are approximately three million of books and art. So utmost care will be needed. For example, if any of you smoke, you cannot smoke in any of the rooms containing artwork of any kind, which is all the public rooms and most of the private ones." Another slide of a dining hall.

"You will work ten hours a day, six days a week, 8am to 1pm...and then 3 pm to eight. You'll have run of the grounds when not working, including the pools, trails, tennis cours and so forth. Any questions so far?"

Elliot sheepishly raised his hand and was quickly acknowledged.
"There aren't any ghosts, or angry grounds keepers who would have gotten away with it if it weren't for us meddling kids, are there?" He asked, seriously, with almost a hopeful look in his eyes.

Dan nodded his head as the professor spoke. sounds good to me he thought. He turned his head at the guy who had just spoken, moron he said internally. "Whats the rule on beer?"

"The house is old enough to have a few tales of hauntings, and the groundskeeper may have a grudge." Miles said with a wink and a finger to the side of his nose. "But if you darn kids just don't poke your nose where it doesn't belong, there should be no problem." The group chuckled a bit.

Dan nodded his head as the professor spoke. sounds good to me he thought. He turned his head at the guy who had just spoken, moron he said internally. "Whats the rule on beer?"

"Well, if your over 21 and being responsable and not drinking on the job, I don't see that it should be a problem...but if it is a problem, you will be fired on the spot and evicted from the estate and have to find your own way home. Do it on your own time, and BYOB. Which brings me to a couple of things..."

He held up a green peice of paper from the stack. "I'll be providing transportation to and from the estate, any theft...and this includes breaking into the liquer cabniet...will result in a lost of credit, wages, and arrest. Any damages, which includes spilling beer, ciggie burns, and carelessness will also be reflected in your wages and grade."

Elliot grinned from ear to ear, glad that the professor seemed to understand him, and looked around with a snorting laugh until he caught the look that the one who asked about beer gave him. He fell silent, sunk down in his seat, and turned red in the cheeks.

Oli frowned as he listened to the professor talk. He had come in a few minutes late, but was quick to catch up and didn't really need to be told anything twice, or.. more than twice. He sighed, closing his eyes and leaning his head back at the thought of having to go outside each time he needed to grab a smoke. Oh well, he thought, at least it's still better than being couped up back at home, or even worse.. being couped up on campus all summer. That thought brought the sideways smirk back to his lips.

He shot a glance over to the kid asking about beer, frowning at the look he gave the one asking a very Scooby Doo-esque question. Hell, the question had even drawn a chuckle from Oli's lips, seeing as how with the manor being very grand and doubly old, with many expensive artifacts, a question of foul-play should be addressed first. Self-preservation before getting hammered, Ogre.

His mind flashbacked to the library slide as his hand shot into the air. "Professor.." He spoke up, "Is there anything saying we can't read these books if we find something quite interesting and regard it with the utmost care we can give?"

Oli had always been a bit of a bookworm for the classics, so a chance to read a first edition would almost be enough to give him a chubby.

"Is there anything saying we can't read these books if we find something quite interesting and regard it with the utmost care we can give?"

"Any of the books in the library can be read, there are some special editions in cases that cannot be touched. However, if it's an older book, read it in the library only. It only takes a careless moment for someone to spill a drink or leave a book in direct sunlight...and some of these books are that old."

Another slide, a ballroom. "You'll be paid 500 a week, two meals a day, and have a private room in the servants quarters. Town is 45 miles away, and I'll take you in on Sundays if anyone wants." Now a slide of a study with what looked like a Whistler over the fireplace. "You'll be graded on the thoroughness and accuracy of your work, and there is a 500 bonus for each of you if we finish before August 15th."

"So, if there are no more questions, finish those forms and we'll do the drug test when you come up here to drop them off."

The door opened quietly and a girl slid in, trying to keep the professor from noticing her tardiness. Her Auburn hair was heavily curled and in bit of a mess and her grey-green eyes were hidden behind a pair of glasses. She adjusted her glasses slightly as she took a seat in the front, on the far right of the room and quickly opened her packet up and flipped to the page that everyone else seemed to be on. She realized she was just getting in at the end. She held her breath silently, waiting to see if he'd noticed her tardiness. She fussed with the strings of her sweater with her free hand as she quickly copied down the information she needed into her notebook.

"Come on down when your ready." Miles said, waving a small object that looked like a stiff toothbrush. "After you filled out the sticker for the drug test, and turn in your paperwork."

One of the students came down, and Miles had him hold the odd item between his cheek and gums. The student made a face and started drooling a bit while Miles went through his packet and then took and put the object in a medical bio-envelope.

"Next!" he called out cheerfully, giving the poor guy a candy to get the taste out of his mouth.

When he called out next she looked down at her paper, slowly filling out the label and the paper work as if she was trying to delay the inevitable. She eventually finished and no one else had stood up so she did, and walked over to the professor and then holds the paperwork up to him.
"Here you go Professor..."

"Thank you young lady, didn't I have you for Art History? Hold this between your gum and cheek and it'll taste vile. But if you keep it in there I've give you a sweet and maybe a job." Miles smiled at her and winked, but in the broad comic way not in the old wolfie way.

Dan finished his papers and walked down to the professor, handing them over and opening his mouth for the drug test.

"Er..." Miles paused when the next student opened his mouth. "You can do it yourself, I just have to witness it...." Miles held out the swab.

Oli finished filling out the required papers and stood, tucking his pen into his pocket and then maneuvering down to the professor. He handed over his papers and held his hand out for the swab.

After pressing the vile little thing against his cheek and handing it back to the professor, he took his piece of candy, quickly slipping it into his mouth before he turned to head up and out of the building.

Elliot finished filling out his paper work as well and got in line to be drug tested, not really giving the necessity much thought, he was thinking more about the piece of candy he was likely to get afterwards. "Blue pill, or red pill, Neo..." He muttered to himself as he peered down into the selection he was about to get. "Red pill!" He chirped when he had finished the swab and snatched a cherry flavored one. He went back to his seat, mmming to himself. "Matrixy goodness..."

She looks at Elliot and giggles slightly at his joke as she opens her mouth and quickly swabs her cheek with the vile horrible swab. She coughed and covered her mouth as she handed it back to the professor and quickly took a lemon flavored candy. She turned her head towards the professor.
"Yes, I took your Art history class last semester." She says and smiles slightly.
"Do you need anything else from us Professor?"

Dan shrugged and took the swab, pressing it against his cheek. It really was vile. he turned it in and took the candy. "its almsot morning happy hour at Connor's, Who's interested?"

Oli was halfway out the door when he heard the big man's invitation to go and drink. Seeing as how he was already on his way to the bar, Oli raised his hand in a half-hearted I am... sort of way. He dropped the hand back down to his side, slipping it into his jeans pocket before moving fully into the main hall. He wasn't in too much of a hurry to get to Connor's, but he was in a bit of a hurry to get out of the stuffy building and into the morning light, as well as get outside where he could light up a cigarette.

"Matrixy goodness..." Miles heard and stifled a chuckle. "I can tell your going to be the life of the party..." He glanced down at the paperwork. "Elliot"

"Do you need anything else from us Professor?" The girl asked*

"No, everyone! Before you go out on your binge!" He rapped the podium. "I'll call everyone Monday who's going, if I don't call you either you weren't bondable or you didn't pass your test. Those chosen please be here at 9 am on Wednesday and we'll head out."

He beamed at them all. "I think we'll be in for an exciting time!"

*If writing in the first person, which is fine, please include your PC's name in the title spot above the post so we don't have to go back to the OCC to see who you are :D

Elliot

Elliot looked up at Professor Davis with wide eyes, saying. "If by party, you mean a game of D&D and a case of Dew, then yeah. But from the looks of it, Prof., the others like to party harder than I." He then turned to the girl who coughed. "Are you okay? Need a hankey?" He asked as he offered her a neatly folded one from his shirt pocket. It was Monogrammed "E.R. 02."

Lilah

Lilah shook her head. "No... I think it was just the swab." She says and smiles at him. "Thank you though." She says as she looks at her watch. "ugh... I have to get going... Thank you again professor." She says as she heads out towards the door.

The weekend flew by, the calls were made and on a bright and crisp morning Miles' old school bus was waiting for the students to take them off to the Estate.
