The official Authors' Hangout Winter Holiday 2022 contest Support Thread

One in the finoished folder but it need a few rereads. 15.5k.

That is such a cool auditorium!

Have you ever heard of a group called "Hayseed Dixie?" They play AC/DC songs in old fashion bluegrass style. It's all acoustic, no amps, and they use banjos, guitars, and fiddles. I listened to an interview with the lead singer of Hayseed Dixie and Brian Johnson of AC/DC and Brian loved Hayseed Dixie's music so much that he took a few old American bluegrass songs and did them AC/DC style. I love it when people play with music like that.
The volume goes way up in the car when that comes on.

I've heard a couple of covers with banjos. They're great and make me laugh.

Can I publish a sort of prequel to an already published story?

Its not a chapter, a sort of standalone, but would help set up my other two Christmas based stories?

If it stands alone as a story, it should be fine, as long as you aren't setting it up as a chapter of anything bigger. The kicker is in the "setting it up as a chapter."

Yeah, that could be the problem.

It works on its own, as a nice little story, but could be seen as a setting up thing. Hmmm.

You're overthinking this. No one is going to scrutinize it beyond whether it stands alone as a story in its own right and isn't marked as a chapter of anything larger. The Web site doesn't scrutinize thematic contest entry for appropriateness to the contest theme or uniqueness as a story. It just doesn't allow chapters set up as chapters.

Just post it.

if it’s too “chapterlike,” the readers will let you know.

Yeah it's not as if it's going to be labelled chapter 1 of X..

Might have a bash at something festive. Evocatively seasonal presents an interesting target. New characters and scenario pulled from the ether, as per my usual process...

I finally figured out what I am going to write about for this contest!!!!

Just 9 more days until the start. OMG I need to start writing. I need to start editing. I need to figure out that formatting for pagination does not mattttterrrrrrr.

I am soooo excited to start another writing project (and putting my other writing projects on hold haha.) Though for this contest I am thinking of delving into yet another category of erotica that I know NOTHING about. More research....more research.

Yes, yes, yes. I can get it all done. Work be damned. Sleep is over-rated. I can eat as I type.

Heh .. I really am excited to have a story idea at least.

*Does a happy dance* ... *Does the Charlie Brown theme song happy dance.*

I've submitted my entry. Yes, my only one. I'm a bit on edge, because the link to the contest page won't load for me. So I have only Rusty's opener of this thread to give me the exact wording to copy in the Notes to Admin: WINTER HOLIDAY 2022. No offense, Rusty, I just would like to see the exact wording from Laurel. I did dig up Laurel's notice from last year, which specified HOLIDAY, not HOLIDAYS, so I guess I'm probably okay. But if I can ever find something to worry about, I'm all over it.

Those guys rule! Found them on You Tube

I have a brother sister story, Christmas themed, has the romance angle the I/T sib crowd likes, but....the sister is a stripper, and she's been with other men and....I mean there is no room for such a slut on a site obviously geared towards chaste and virtuous women.

Sarcasm aside I'd lose .10(at least) on the fact the sister is an exhibitionist and the brother likes the idea of other men looking at her.

Submitted!

It's in nonconsent/reluctance, which probably ain't wise. But the characters are all such assholes, it seemed like a reasonable place to put it. Happy holidays, y'all!:nana:

Starting on it today. This will be my first submission. Wish me luck and Happy Holidays to all.
Best of luck and some advice when it comes to a story in a contest, don't sweat the score too much. The contest draws trolls but the site does a sweep at the end to get rid of unfair one bombs and you'll see a spike at the end.

Does the monthly contest still exist? It seems to have stalled at March.

It does that sometimes. Nobody knows why.

Then there'll be a sudden unexpected rash of monthly contest winners to clear the backlog. Sometimes. Sometimes not.

I won a monthly contest once. I was shocked: not because I didn't expect it (though I didn't), but because I hadn't been aware those contests were still a thing.

What are the rules of voting in such contests?
(sorry for the stupid question, I didn't find an answer for that in the FAQ page and I never participated in such contest before)
25 votes with 5 stars? 25 votes with ANY stars?
or the voting is separated from the stars?

And who wins?
The story with the highest vote, for example 4.95 and the story with 4.80 looses?
Or the story with overall highest number of 5stars?
Or, again, the voting system is separated from stars?

And one last question, but perhaps the most interesting:
Are stories put in categories?
Or, for example - gay stories are competing with straight stories?

Yup. Any 25 votes, after all the sweeps are done. The sweeps remove questionable votes. The votes ARE the stars.

Highest vote score wins. Again, the votes and the stars are the same thing.

The writer places their story into a category, and then yes, they all compete against each other.

Thank you, I thought the voting system is somehow separated from the voting-star system :)
Like a "thumb up" icon put somewhere down the story, but okay, now I got it. Thanks for explaining.

I'm, however, a bit surprised by... the competing-all-category rule. :)
