The official Authors' Hangout Winter Holiday 2022 contest Support Thread

And who wins?
The story with the highest vote, for example 4.95 and the story with 4.80 looses?
Or the story with overall highest number of 5stars?
Or, again, the voting system is separated from stars?
Highest score wins, and if there are multiple stories with the same score, the story with the most votes wins
the more 5s you get will help a lot, but the voting system IS the stars. It's all about having fun and putting a great story up, so relax and let's see what you have

FINALLY submitted! Over a year ago I had the genesis of an idea of a story to try an original take on A Christmas Carol because I was sick of the Hallmark Channel retellings and the "Original Takes" were merely milktoast modernized Hallmark Channel retellings. It's a ghost story, it was meant to scare you. So I missed the deadline (by weeks) last year, but I'm glad I did. I put A Krissmas Karole on the shelf.

Between then and now I wrote 30 stories and sharpened my stagnated skills, picked up a few followers, and worse of all I sat down and wrote out the backstory that A Krissmas Karole is based on: "We're a Wonderful Wife" because at the time I wanted to combine "It's a Wonderful Life" and "A Christmas Carol" and realized after 7 chapters (now ten) of back story a couple of things, first was that "It's a Wonderful Life" IS "A Christmas Carol" (Substitute 3 ghosts for 1 angel and it's nearly the same story) and that my ending didn't fit the narrative, even for a ghost story it was unbelievable, so I tore down A Krissman Karole and rebuilt it, and I think I came up with a better story. 30K words.

My first is submitted. My take on something that has probably been done a thousand times.

Mine‘s still pending. Anyone approved yet?
Mine's approved and on the launch pad. I'm furiously scribbling to see if I can get the antithesis story complete in time to take a drubbing from my trolls

My story is scheduled for posting on Friday. What I've seen from some of you folks tells me this was the first day for early birds to gain approval. It's my first try at the winter contest, so I have even less idea of what to expect than I would normally. The story is 4600 words, going into E&V.

Oh yeah, right, hope all of you do well.

Re the Winter story: I'm thinking about it, and it's the thought that counts, right?
A bunny did hop by and coughed up what is probably a well-worn theme of a chance encounter with a newly abandoned woman, etc, etc, etc
Re the scoring: The votes are counted, and some flaky ones are discarded. That makes sense, but brings up a question that has been nagging at me. I often look at the "New Stories" list and read some. I look at how many views and how many votes, etc, and noticed the other day an author had submitted his first story, and within a few days had gotten over 14K views! Then today I see he is nearing 20K. Most stories I've noticed on the list will garner a few hundred or a few thousand in a week or so, but this performance seems rather unique, especially for an author without a following.
Is that number of views unusual?

How many followers does the author have?
Also are they cross advertising somewhere popular?
Also, which section did they put the story in LW?
I write extremely niche fetish stories and get an average 2k readers!

It's in the 'mature' category/
Author has 5 followers.
I had not thought he might be advertising somewhere.

I have submitted my first story in the past six months for this contest. It is a complete stand alone story and clocked in at over 100 pages on word. I hope people like it and don't find it too long. I always got frustrated reading chapter stories that weren't complete.

I have a few stories that I'm trying to finish up from before. I'm sure I could come up with something though.

Man, I'm glad to be back home now that the season is over. LOL.

Got mine in earlier this week. Good luck to everyone, and happy holidays!

I have one in the hopper. It was going to be for the last contest, but I couldn't finish in time.
