The Patient (Closed)

Felix

Felix gets to the room just before the others, Inside, Doctor Lomar leaning over the body of a young woman as he tries to resusitate her.

"Where is that blasted emergency team." He shouts as he looks up and sees Felix.

But Felix isn't listening. His whole attention is focused on the still form of the woman in the bed.

Lissa!

And then he is by her side, his eyes searching her palid face.

"Lissa." He whispers and he knows what he has to do. Sliding his arm underneath her neck and upper back, he pulls her off the bed towards him.

"Felix!!! What the hell are you doing?" Lomar asks incredulously.

Felix says nothing as he continues to look at her.

"For God's sake, Felix. PUT HER DOWN!" Lomar shouts as he comes round the bed and tries to grab him.

"NO!" Felix pushes the doctor away, literally shoving him to the other side with a feat of superhuman strength.

Turning his attention back to the young woman, he firmly brings his lips on her blue ones and kisses with a fury he has never known before...

Lissa

She was so cold. She had never felt this bone chilling kind of cold before, but she knew it was something bad. She no longer see the ghost that had been choking her, nor hear or feel anything. The ringing in her ears was about it.

She felt like she was floating in a thick liquidy substence, but unmoving. She felt a panic inside herself growing, the urge to breathe, to see, anything to know where she was. But she couldn't manage any of it.

Felix?. She could hear the faintest of whispers through her mind, his name. She tried to move her dead hands to her throat, her mouth. Find that ball of cotton she felt stuck, blocking.

She felt a ripple around her, shaking suddenly with violence and then stillness again. Her eyes grew heavy, her surroundings seemed lighter, was she dying?

"NO!" Although it was shouted, it was no more than a whisper inside her mind. Felix's voice, what was he saying? She tried to say his name, tell him it was alright.

Again her surroundings rippled with another jolt, this one seemed to last longer, opening her eyes a bit more.

What was that?

She felt a slight sensation at her lips, her mouth opening against her will. She struggled to stop it, stop before something more poured into her mouth.

NO! Her mind fought against this invasion, but she couldn't do anything to stop it. Warmth spread through her lips, the strangest sensation she had ever felt.. And then....

It was painful at first, so painful she recoiled mentally to reject it. Air came rushing back into her body. Tiny pin pricks of pain erupted all over inside her mouth, throat and lungs. Her fingers managed to coil into a fist, but she could not strike out at the unseen force hurting her.

Stop! pl-please stop-p. She tried to speak again and infrustration realised nothing she said was actually being spoken.

The warmth spread out, and continued to do so. The air pushed into her lungs and back out.. Somewhere in the blackness she heard a faint thump.. And then another.

"She's.. She's breathing?" A doctor stood over their place upon the hard floor, watching as the color slowly came back into Lissa's face. "She. She moved!" He stammered, his eyes wide and staring. He wouldn't believe this for anything in the world, if he hadn't seen it with his own eyes.. She had been dead, hadn't she?

She parted her lips for the first time on her own, gulping in a large quantity of air. The tiny pin pricks began to expand through her entire body, but it was if the limbs had all been asleep, not as painful as before.

Her eyes watered a little with tears, moving behind closed lids. She became more and more alert, realising she was returning the kiss. Why had she been kissed and who was it?

Her eyes slowly opened, but quickly closed. She couldn't focus very well, it hurt to even try. "Oh!" gasping, she drew back from the lips that had been kissing her, her hand pressing against her eyes.

"Lissa?" It was a deeper voice, one she recognised instantly.

"F-Felix?" Her lashes barely parted, seeing his face closely hovering over her own. She gave a small smile in welcoming, he had gotten her away from that.. monster! She felt a little different, but had little time to focus on it as a new face came into her line of vision.. A doctor.

"We should get her back into the bed Felix." He said sternly.

"He.. he can see me?" She mumbled, looking still at the doctor in confusion. When Felix didn't answer, merely nodded, her eyes swung back to his. "He can?" She whispered, it wasn't registering very well obviously. Again the nod, it was enough.. Tears slipped down her cheeks as her lips trembled.

"You?" He had some how woke her up! Doctors couldn't do it, she couldn't do it herself, but Felix had done it! She didn't know what to say, all she knew was what she felt. Her hand which had been resting on her forehead gingerly moved, testing strength mostly before grabbing Felix (a little clumsily) around his neck and bringing him back down to her lips. She kissed him deeply, pouring all her happiness, love and gratitude into it. She was too weak to really but that didn't stop her from trying.

Felix

"Okay! That's enough!" Felix is vaguely aware of Lomar pulling Felix away before bending over the girl himself.

"Felix...?" He hears her call weakly, stifling the urge of going back to her.

"He's here, Lissa." Lomar says in his best bedside manner. "Welcome back."

At that moment, the emergency team arrives.

"About time." Lomar snaps back at them. "Where have you been?"

"Sorry, Doctor." Says one of the team.

"How are you feeling?" Lomar asks Lissa as he continues his checks.

"Feel tired." She murmers, her eyelids flickering.

"Get some rest. You deserve it." He smiles and watches her fall asleep.

Turning to the emergency team, he tells them to go outside.

"I don't know what happened there or nor do I care. The main thing is that a young lady has another chance at life and I can't help it was because of you." He says to Felix, looking at him questionably.

"Thank you, Doctor."

"Don't thank me, Felix." Lomar says as he fixes him with a long cold stare. "What you did was unethical and against all hospital policy. If you ever do that again, I will make sure you never set inside a hospital again - even as a patient. You understand me??"

"Yes, Doctor."

"Good. Now let's leave the girl to her rest. You can see her again later on."

****************************************

After that, things settle back to a form of normalcy for Felix as he returns to his job. The only difference is that during his breaks and straight after his shifts, he regularly visits Lissa who is growing better by the day. But despite that, he can't help but feel an awkwardness growing between the two of them. After the initial kiss straight after her revival, there has been nothing. All they do is talk practically in monosyllables as he sits by her bedside. It's as if she doesn't want to know him.

But can that be true? After all the things they have gone through?

A few times, he has tried to approach her about it but to no avail.

It also doesn't help that once her real name and details are known, the hospital is able to find and contact her family who comes over in their droves. That only leaves him to visit her during his shifts and she just seems to become colder and colder towards him.

Why?

He doesn't know.

Finally the day comes that she is discharged...

Her brother came to get her from the hospital. After months of therapy, tests, and numerous attempts to give up on her part.. She was finally able to walk out of there. After they wheeled her outside anyway.

"Ready?"

She gave a slight nod of her head, not meeting his eyes as she glanced around yet again. This room had been her 'home' for so long... She felt a pain somewhere near her heart, she was leaving..

He hefted her bag and headed out while a nurse pushed Lissa towards the elevator. Her mind wasn't on departing here and getting her life back.. Her mind was on Felix, as it had been every night since she woke up.

She heard a hundred times from nurses how the 'fairy tale' came about, how Felix woke her with a kiss. She was very grateful to him for all he had done for her, but had she imagined it all? She didn't think she had, thats why she couldn't face him. She killed his wife and unborn son! That guilt alone was enough to keep her from ever darkening his door again.

But now... Now she was leaving for good. Heading back to her life and final months in school. But would she ever be gone from this place if she didn't say something to him.

But what could she say? How could she even face him, knowing how much she hurt him?

By the time she stood against the door frame of the cab car, she knew she couldn't leave here without saying one thing to him.

"Lissa? Come on, we gotta get going!" Her brother was irritated all day, who knew why but she didn't feel like listening to him or his nagging voice. Shouldn't she just go and leave well enough alone?

She'd been trying to for months now, ignoring him. Afraid of hurting him further until he finally stopped coming to see her. She never stopped thinking about him, would this always nag at the back of her mind like this?

"Hang on. I have something to do before we go." She walked past the nurse, wheelchairs were only a formality, she didn't need it, didn't want to use it ever again..

She ran past the nurse and through the double doors, stopping to speak with Carly. "Where's Felix?" She blurted out as she stood gripping the counter. She was still torn, even the look in Carly's eyes didn't deter her, this had to be done.

"Fourth floor."

She took the stairs, they would be much quicker to get there than waiting. She had to do this now before it was too late, before she backed out.

The hall was devoid of people, but he was there somewhere. Walking quickly, she moved from room to room, peeking inside to locate him. This was a hospital so she couldn't very well yell out his name.

She found him inside an empty room, sweeping the floor quietly. His back was to her, apprently he didn't hear her approach. Now what would she do, what would she say?

She stepped inside the room, letting the door close behind her, alerting him to her presense. She'd just say the apology she had to get out and leave him be.. If he stayed and listened to her.

Before her courage waned and she fled yet again, she spoke up quickly, blurting out what needed to be said.

"I am sorry Felix. For taking from you.. your wife and child. I never got the chance, or maybe just the nerve to face you and say that.. But I had to before I leave here today." She flushed, now nervous more than ever on what his response would be.

She felt open and bare, vulnerable to whatever his decision was to be. Tears started and didn't stop, she shook but hid it from him. The shame of what she'd done would haunt her for life, she could never forgive herself if he couldn't.

"You don't have to for-forgive me for what I did, but I had to at least face you and say what I felt in my heart. If I could trade my life for theirs, I would." And she meant it, but still it did not seem to be enough, never would be enough.

He looks at her as she stands there, her face wet with her sobs. His heart went out to her.

The poor girl! He thinks to himself with an almost sense of relief, finally knowing why she had been ignoring him. No wonder she being acting the way has been! She must be guilt ridden!

For Felix, as he takes that split second to consider how he did feel. The death of his wife has been something he is still trying to deal with and when he thought he couldn't feel any worst, the shock of finding out that she was pregnant proved otherwise. But despite the pain he had felt, that he is still feeling, he has never once blamed Lissa.

How can I? It was never her fault!

His silence must have been too long, as he sees Lissa turn and leaves the room.

"Wait!" He cries out as he quickly follows her. "Please." He begs when he sees her still moving. Dashing forward, he quickly overtakes the girl and whirls round to face her.

"Lissa. My wife's accident," He still finds himself flinching when he talks about it out loud, "you can't blame yourself for what your boyfriend did."...

Lissa

"he wasn't my.." She trailed off, brushing tears from her cheeks. She should have known that by blurting that all out like she had that he would be shocked. How could he answer all that?

"I drove Felix!" She sobbed, "I drove the car! I did it. I knew better. And I still did it." She colapsed into him, her face buried into the curve of his neck.

She hurt with guilt, but she hurt more since her forced exile of him. She didn't know until the moment she seen him again just how much she wanted him there with her. If nothing more than a comforting pair of arms to hold her for only a minute.. And when he came after her, its instantly what she went for.

She truely missed him.

Her arms went around him and she latched onto him, tightly around his neck. He was stiff in her arms, but she didn't care. She wanted just one thing now that she got her hug.. She wanted his forgiveness.

"I'm so sorry. Sorrier than.. " She couldn't think of anyone or anything more sorrowful than her. "You saved me.. And i hurt you." She tried to gather some self control, but hugged him tighter.

Just one more minute.. Please. Then I will go. She silently prayed.

Felix

The relevation of Lissa's words strikes him deep and remembers the accident on that winter's evening. Watching as the paramedics pulled out the dead body of his wife. He remembers looking at the other car, seeing Lissa's unconscious body at the driver's wheel.

She had killed his wife and unborn son! SHE HAD KILLED HIS WIFE AND UNBORN SON!

"N-nooo!" He gasps, pushing her away from him as if she is suddenly red hot.

"Felix..!" Lissa sobs, her face screwed up as the tears overflows.

"You...killed...my...wife." He gasps in almost disbelief as he stares at the ground, not wanting to look at her crying face. "You...killed...my...son."

He stares straight at her, his eyes wide, full of hatred. Forcing the girl to recoil.

"YOU...KILLED...MY...FAMILY!!!" He screams, his own tears rolling down his face and suddenly, he wishes that he had left her to die at that 'airport'.

It's not too late! A voice in his head tells him. There is still time!

"What???" He says aloud.

DO IT! Don't let your wife and child's death go punished! DO IT! PUNISH HER!

He is not even aware of grabbing the girl, bringing his hands around her throat. All he can hear is the voice telling him, goading him to do it...

Lissa

She tried to gasp his name, her eyes widening, filling with fear instantly. More tears spilled, but her hands were too busy clawing at his, trying to pry his fingers from her throat.

With a cry, she yanked away from him, his nails tearing into her skin. Something dark hovered over his head, something.. something evil!

"FE-LIX!" She cried out, wrenching herself yet again away from him, or trying to. She still hadn't gained her freedom.

Fear made her heart lurch and her head swim. She couldn't draw any more air into her lungs, his fingers were back. Her sight went black and with it more panic set in. She kicked and kicked and kept kicking at him.

She turned cold, literally freezing cold as his fingers applied even more pressure...

I'm SORRY! Her mind screamed it over and over, but the voice was fading.. Sounds came from down the hall, someone was coming... Or was it her hope filled prayers causing a delusion?

Felix

Suddenly, he is aware of hands grabbing at him, pushing him back onto the floor. Somewhere in the distance, he can hear screaming.

As if a fog is starting to lift from his mind, he looks over and sees Doctor Lomar bending over someone lying spread out on the floor. He can see that it's a young woman, her lovely face looking upwards with a gazed expression.

"Lissa??" He gasps out, the realisation beginning to dawn.

"It's no use." Lomar says resignedly. "We are too late."

"Too late??" He shouts as guards pull him to his feet.

Lomar slowly pulls himself up and turns to Felix, a look of sorrow on his usual expressionless face.

"Why did you do it? Why did you kill her?"

And Felix is dragged screaming down the corridors, all the while hearing a small voice laughing.

Lissa

She sat in a dark room, surrounded by voices, all laughing, dancing. Gayly enjoying the trivial little win the accomplished.. The coup of all coups..

They had gotten BOTH souls in one single stupid moment.

She glared at the grinning guard.

"You'll get yours.. In the end." She vowed coldly.

The beast merely threw back his head and roared with laughter.

In a few months time, after all the little trials and evidence parades.. Felix would be joining them.

Executed.

Pay backs were sweet.

Her eyes narrowed as all lilght went out inside the room and cold clamy hands began to pinch and twist at her flesh.

She had no heart now, no pain other than those hands, but she had her hatred.. Felix, your time will come.
