Damien Grant spent most of the day at the library. This wasn't unusual for the ancient history major, he spent a good deal of his time pouring over the books the university had to offer. Despite his short, dark spiky hair, his deep brown eyes usually concealed behind his tinted glasses, his black leather jacket draped over his broad shoulders and the various pieces of silver jewelry on his person, Damien was more of a scholar than his appearance might have suggested. However Damien wasn't studying history today...at least not that which was part of his usual coursework.
In a quiet little recess in the back of the building was a single shelf of books the library had put under the heading "occult history." The university thought they were simply old textbooks, which they were, but Damien had found something the academic staff had overlooked. The books were full of ancient runes, transcriptions of old documents and photographs of stone carvings discovered by archeologists from all over the world. They seemed meaningless to the casual observer, mostly written in Latin or some ancient Druidic language long since forgotten. Few if any students had ever read them as they were largely indecipherable, but after many a laborious night of cross-referencing, Damien had managed to translate a good deal of the foreign text.
The ancient writings were, in fact, a collection of spells and incantations used by pagans centuries ago, "magick" as it was called by some. Damien was as much of a sceptic as anyone and would not have believed a word of it had he not experienced it for himself. It had just been something he tried on a lark, late one night in his dorm room; after translating a series of runes into a form of Latin he could read (which roughly translated as "spirit eye") Damien recited the incantation...and thus was his first contact with Krystal.
Krystal Rose was Damien's late girlfriend. She had died last year in motorcycle accident and her death had left Damien devastated. That night, as the words passed through his lips, was the first time he had seen her since. She was only a spirit though, a wispy apparition without a tangible form, but this brief contact with her fueled Damien's determination to translate the rest of the ancient text.
It was tireless work and his grades suffered for it, but the end result he was hoping for would make it all worth it. He had summoned Krystal's spirit numerous times, for though she could not touch she could still speak. He explained his plan to her, how there just might be a way for them to be together again. Tonight was the night they were going to find out.
It was late and the campus library was nearly empty, save for the most studious of students. Damien was in his private little recess, repeating the invocation to himself in his head. He quietly strode between the bookshelves, his eyes peering from behind his glasses, looking for a suitable..."vessel", as it were. In his hand he toyed with a small gold & emerald ring, a ring that had once belonged to Krystal.
Not finding what he was looking for he was about to give up and go search elsewhere when he spied her, sitting alone at one of the small study desks, engrossed in her notes and textbook. He kept out of sight behind the bookshelf, eying her intently while he rubbed the ring's jewel with his thumb. As if on cue, Krystal's translucent form materialized into view beside him. She uttered not a word but her ghostly eyes said everything. Damien understood and nodded in agreement. Clutching the ring tightly in his palm, he whispered the first part of the invocation. Then silently he passed by the desk, unnoticed by the young woman sitting there, and deposited the ring on the corner of her notebook.
Quickly he slipped behind the shelf on the other side of the room, where he and Krystal watched in anticipation for what would happen next.
