It's not that smarter, better educated people are more likely to vote Democratic, though it is a consistent pattern.
The Republican party has actively courted the stupid vote for more than a decade and is finally seeing the results of their work. The potential of the politically stupid was first recognized by Karl Rove.
He was the first campaign professional to see the value of attacking an opponent's strong points, instead of their weak spots. If you opponent is a decorated war veteran and your man was awol for most of his military service, just claim the hero was really a coward and got all his medals because his daddy had political influence.
A smart person sees through this kind of thing with little trouble, but the stupid cling to it.
The appeal to stupid matured after 911. The Truthers came forward with tales of phantom construction workers and secret nuclear devices, all part of a grand and perfect conspiracy. The greatest evidence of the conspiracy was the total lack of evidence. It was a triumph of stupidity.
This was the cue for the Birthers. Stupid on the face of it. All evidence is ignored, all testimony is dismissed. All of it aided by the completely aware, who happily shepherd the stupid into larger and larger flocks. Most aware people are too embarrassed to admit to believing the Birther story, but happily encourage others to do so.
In any large group, stupid people out number the smart. It's just the nature of the world. Fortunately for the world, they are easily distracted and will move on to something new, soon enough.
