Helmand Province, Afghanistan

It was another fucking hot and worthless day in the boring deserts of Southern Afghanistan. Pfc. Ryan Schmidt was riding shotgun in a HMMWV. An Eminem song was blasting from the old boom box somebody had brought as they cruised mostly up and down the empty highway – looking for any sign of Taliban.

“Schmidt – you got a pretty girl waiting for you back home?” Private Gonzalez asked from above – he was manning the vehicle’s heavy M2 machine gun. Ryan shook his head and thought about it. He had been close with Erin before he graduated and joined the Army after high school. He had never really broken it off with her, he just left for Basic Training and told her he’d see her later. No dramatic, tear filled good bye at the bus station – but no angry fallout either. It was probably for the best – she didn’t have to worry needlessly about him coming home. Plus, he had no strings attached on his end, either.

“Nah, man.” Ryan said, after much though. “I don’t have anybody at home.”

Gonzalez started laughing. “I knew it – dude. You must be-…”

Without warning, the whole HMMWV shook violently. The glass from the windshield exploded hitting Ryan’s face. He saw a bright light and ringing filled his ears. The voices of his squad mates vaguely started fading in and out – along with gun fire. This was it – he was going to die, he knew it. And he’d never see Erin again. He’d never get to hang out with her, never get to touch the small of her back, never get to kiss her neck. He let out a single sob and yelped in agony when suddenly, the vague sounds of gunfire stopped.

“Schmidt! Are you alright?! Open your fucking eyes, soldier!” The loud voice of his sergeant bellowed in his ear, cutting through the ringing noise.

Ryan opened his eyes and saw what had happened. Their Humvee had been hit by an RPG attack. His face had been cut up from the exploding glass. “You’re lucky to be alive, Schmidt.” Sarge said, as he gave Ryan his hand and helped him out of the wrecked Humvee. “That rocket landed right in front of where you were sitting.”

Ryan stared at the horizon. He knew what he was going to do when he got home.

United Sates

It felt weird walking in the halls of his old High School. He was just a few years older than these kids, but he had the chiseled body of a Greek god and was wearing the dark colors of his Green Service Uniform. He also had a few scars on his face from the HMMWV attack years ago. The solider was tall, with dark blonde hair and deep blue eyes.

He roamed the halls, not really sure where to find her. But he knew she was here – or at least her parents were as they were still listed in the phone book. Occasionally, a teacher he had would see him and pull him inside their office for a brief chat about how he had fared in the Army and how he was doing.

He was just about to give up looking for her when the deep tone of the school bell rung out and the halls filled with kids moving to their next class. Then, he saw her. She came out of one classroom and started heading through the hall in his direction – cutting through the mobs of kids.

Ryan positioned himself in front of her, and she came out of a crowd right in front of him. He stared at her for a moment before clearing his throat. “Uh, hi Erin.” He said weakly. “How are you?” He asked humbly.
