I think that's a good modern comparison and the two stories could blend well together but apart from it not being Stanley Kubrick's best movie, In my opinion. the film was not based on just one book to my recollection, and is a case of the film being better than the book of the film. but only because it had the beautiful Nicole Kidman in it.

Eyes wired shut type of thing maybe or a cult I think my wife’s idea is that while a young woman is investigating her heritage she gets drawn into a world of bondage and pain, following the story line. I think it will work.
