"Oh, that's all right," Lily assured him, patting his arm lovingly, when Fen apologized at telling the friendly elf their real location. "Don't worry about it." There was no way for him to know better. Fen was not used to deception, neither was Lily, but she was just afraid given their circumstances and did not want to risk word getting back to the witch where they were. She was probably just being paranoid. They were all the way across the continent! Plus, they were going to kill the witch anyway. Right? Right.
After her father returned, the four made their way to where the barmaid told Lily her uncle resided. Roland lived in a fairly tiny house at the edge of the city. When they knocked on his door and told him who they were, Roland didn't seem exactly ecstatic to see them.
“William? I’m surprised to see you here. Is this Lily and her husband? And who’s this? I thought your wife passed?”
"Aye. She did. 18 years ago, in fact," he said simply. "Um, but this is Elizabeth..." her father trailed off, clearly not sure how to explain their unique situation.
"Uncle Roland," Lily said, drawing his attention to her. "Will you please let my father and our friend Elizbeth stay with you for a while? They'll find work soon enough but in the meantime? Please. It's a terribly long story, but basically..."
Several hours and several drinks for Roland at the tavern later, and he'd finally seemed to grasp the seriousness of the situation. A few ales in and he was much more amicable to the idea of his brother and some strange woman living with him for a while. They hadn't mentioned Fen was the dragon, just that Lily had been chosen as a sacrifice to a dragon so they'd had to escape. Lily did introduce Fen as her husband to be - it wouldn't be proper for him to be here otherwise. Her uncle was perceptive though, and did suspect there was more to the story. However, like her father, he was a simple man who respected a man's privacy. He valued his alone time, so wasn't exactly thrilled to have them as guests, but would not turn them away as they were family. Plus, it wouldn't be all four of them. Lily had explained that Fen and herself were moving to the next city over to find work.
The farewell with her father was heartfelt but brief. They didn't want to let on to her uncle anything was wrong. Perhaps they should have been honest with him, he was family, after all, but her father thought it safer to hide the gritty details from him, at least until Lily and Fen defeated the evil witch.
Lily hugged her father goodbye and promised him she would return. He squeezed her tight and held on for an extra moment before finally letting go. "Take care of her," he said to Fen. To her uncle, they would seem the words of an overprotective father, but he didn't know of the powerful witch they faced.
After saying goodbye Lily and Fen left hand in hand, Lily with a small lump in her throat at leaving her father and the others behind. They walked away from her uncle's house, down the road towards the main part of the city. "You mentioned you were hungry earlier and that you'd need to sleep soon. Do you want to find somewhere to rest? Maybe there's a cave system nearby or something?" She smiled warmly at Fen.
