Are we talking Extra-Solar planets? Or just our 9 (and yes, I still consider Pluto a planet).

Included below is a link to The Drake Equation on (ugh) Wiki. In 1961, Drake and his scientist buddies calculated how many civilizations they believed were capable of sending out a communication capable of announcing their presence to us.

Using some estimations (which others contest), Drake (et.al) determined that at any one time there are like 10 planets capable of saying "hi".

Cool, huh.

BTW ... the only reason I remember Drake Equation is because I am a Carl Sagan fan. Sagan used to quote Drake often, so often that people used to refer to the equation as the Sagan equation, which is also noted in the Wiki article.
