A book I'm reading (Shots From the Front) claims that the origin of the phrase "gone pear shaped" comes from inflating observation balloons in the First World War, where if the tension was not kept even the gas would stretch one end of the oval balloon more than the other and it would be said to have "gone pear shaped."

Oh, and another piece of First World War trivia: reading the Biggles books (yeah, revisiting my childhood favourites) they use the term "fanned down" rather than "blown up" for things destroyed by dropped bombs. From the airman's point of view, destroyed hangars and the like would appear to collapse downwards, not be blown upwards.
