The deadliest bridge collapse in the country's history occurred on December 29, 1876, when 92 people were killed in the collapse of a railroad bridge over the Ashtabula River in northeastern Ohio. A westward bound train on the Lake Shore Railroad plowed through heavy snow to cross the bridge when passengers heard a terrible cracking sound. Within seconds, the bridge collapsed and the train fell 70 feet into the frozen stream. The cars caught fire and burned. The accident was blamed on possible fatigue of cast iron elements in the bridge's wrought iron truss. The bridge's two designers later committed suicide.

Astronomers are familiar with seeing amazing things through their telescopes. But nothing prepared them for an incredible explosion detected early Wednesday morning (3.19.08) by NASA’s Swift satellite. At 2:12 a.m. EDT, Swift detected an explosion from deep space that was so powerful that its afterglow was briefly visible to the naked eye. Even more astonishing, the explosion itself took place halfway across the visible universe! This was by far the brightest gamma-ray burst afterglow ever seen. Never before has anything so far away come even close to naked-eye visibility. The explosion was so far away that it took its light 7,500,000,000 (7.5 billion) years to reach Earth! In fact, the explosion took place so long ago that Earth had not yet come into existence.

The telescope is able to lock onto a target without deviating more than 7/1000th of an arcsecond, or about the width of a human hair seen at a distance of 1 mile. Pointing the Hubble Space Telescope and locking onto distant celestial targets is like holding a laser light steady on a dime that is 200 miles away.

Saddly out of the billions and billions of galaxies in the universe, we can only see 4 from earth with the naked eye and one of them is ours, the milky way *sigh*
Oh and here's a lovely moon fact. Did you know that the mood smells of gunpowder? Dust from the moon was traipsed back into the cabins of the apollo crafts each time Armstrong and chums returned after play golf or what ever. They reported that moon dust felt like snow, smells like gunpowder and didn't taste to bad. Moon dust is mostly made up of silicon dioxide glass from all the meteors smashing into it. It also has lovely amounts of iron, calcium and magnesium. Oh and did you know that NASA employs a team of guys to sniff every little piece of equipment which goes into space.

Rock and ice are the main ingredients of asteroids, comets and meteors.
Asteroids are made of rocky and/or iron-nickel material and most are found in an orbit between Mars and Jupiter. Most are pitted with impact craters and dust left from collisions with other objects in the solar system.
A group of asteroids orbit the sun called Near-Earth Asteroids because they are somewhat close to the Earth and occasionally may cross Earth's orbit.
Comets are believed to be in long eliptical orbits that take them from beyond the orbit of Uranus to around the sun. These objects are found in the Kuiper Belt between Uranus and Neptune and the Oort Cloud from way out beyond Pluto.
The name "comet" comes from the Greek meaning "long-haired" because of their tails.
The nucleus of a comet is like a ball of rock and dirty snow. As these objects get close to the sun the frozen gases and dust begin to heat and cause a long tail of vaporized gases, dust and debris to flow behind them. As it melts a cloud of gases and dust forms a coma. The head of the comet is the nucleus and coma together.
Meteors, known also as shooting stars, are usually sized from a grain of sand to about a softball. As the meteor enters the Earth's atmosphere it becomes very hot due to friction. They become bright and seem to streak across the sky.
When the Earth enters a meteoroid stream left by a comet it produces a meteor shower. These showers can be predicted and come every year or so. They are named after the constellation that the meteors appear to be coming from. These meteor showers can have over 100 meteors an hour and be quite spectacular. The best way to view these events are reclining or laying on the ground so you can see the whole sky without neck strain.
