Travel Advice..

I went to Melbourne by myself last year. I went for a concert. I was going to go with friends, but they backed out, so it was just me. I'm also shy at times and generally bad and meeting new people. For example, I feel extremely awkward striking up a conversation with a stranger in a bar, whereas there are other people who do this very easily and always make friends in new places really fast.

So I did a bunch of stuff on my own. I originally booked a room in a hostel, but the place was awful (despite winning some award), so I wound up in a motel around the corner with my own bathroom and kitchenette, which was cool. I was happy doing day stuff on my own - zoo, museums, shopping. Night time stuff was harder though. I went to two concerts, so that took care of 2/5 nights, but the other nights I wound up just staying at the motel. Part of the reason is that being young and female and wandering the streets alone at night in a city is not the smartest thing to be doing.

I still managed to have a good time and it was a good experience. I managed to actually get to know some people at the second concert, but sadly it was my last night there! I got invited to a party, but my flight was really early the next morning so I declined.

I actually grew up in NYC, but moved away when I was 15, so don't know the night life too much! :(

Sounds kind of like what I am doing too.. I am staying in a hotel on my own and have plans for two nights (a Knicks game and an Eddie Izzard show) but I can see myself in my room by myself for the other nights. Sure, I will go out and explore a bit and pop into some bars, but there is only so much time you can sit there alone.. Who knows, maybe I'll be lucky and people will talk to me.. Or I may overcome my shyness. My plan right now is to order my drink quite loudly and hope my English Accent interests a few people.. hehe!

I must say (coming late into this thread) going to NY on your own is very bold! I could never go on hols on my home.

My Advice,
1. See a Knicks/Rangers Game
2. Dont mention 9/11 in an insult.
3. Dont get mugged

I have been to NY once and I don’t think its bad at all. In my opinion the people where rather nice, all though some idiot did try to grab my bag by the empire state building. It was stupid too, I felt a small tug on the bag, looked behind me to see some guy slip into the crowed. My first reaction was to look in the bag thinking he had put something inside it. Only about 5 minutes later did it hit me that he might have been attempting to take it. After checking myself nothing was gone, personally I’m more use to the body slam method, it was interesting though. Funniest thing I saw was a guy in Battery Park trying to sell me watches out of a suitcase, that was a first for me, ha ha!!

One piece of advice, when trying to get there a buddy had the ingenious idea to avid traffic by taking the subway into the city from a place called “gun hill”. Yea, after the crack dealer on the bridge, and the security guard in front of the bared up school, I officially revoked his navigating privileges. Turns out he led us straight into the middle of the Bronx, dumb ass. Sooo... don't do that, stick to well lite things.

In the city itself it was nice, of course theirs always the traffic thing, but relative to other cities it wasn’t bad, the city grid is very easy to find you way through. Just know how to drive in a city and you will be fine. We even managed to find parking.

I would also recommend you scope out food places, that’s usually my number 1 motive in any place I go.

Here, Manhattan Yelp, find out what the locals like. Since it got going I have always used yelp.

Oh and, I think I already said this, but when deciding on bars, make friends and ask them. Bars are very tricky to get right.

Just a bump to see if anyone else can offer advice... Not long for me to go now..

Oh, and I have my knicks and eddie izzard tickets too :D

*Nod* Even Minxy carries a pair in her purse.

*nods* once I had my car break down too and called the rac out to it. We opened the boot for something(?) but anyway....there were a pair of my knicks *giggle* just lying there....

Don't know who was more embarrassed

Relax, getting into the US is a bitch, getting out is easy.

If you end up nervously babbling or something blame it on this being your first time in the city, people will understand.

Have fun!!

"rac" "boot"

English or Australian?

I need to find a dictionary for this stuff.

Also, why did you have your car break done, doesn't sound like a wise thing to do.

and I didn't 'have' it break down...it just did it of its own accord

Ok.. after a massively long journey.. I am here... I think I overcame some fear as I have just walked 25 blocks with my bag on wheels to get to my hotel because I got off the wrong subway stop! (not my fault the map for the hotel pointed to 46th st, and its nearer 20th! )
Just working out what to do tonight.. Perhaps just a relaxing meal and an early night.
