I'm having some trouble signing into YIM and I was hoping that some technical savvy How-Toer could help me. I apologise for the confusing post .

This morning, I was able to sign into my yahoo messenger, using my primarily yahoo username. A few hours later, I tried again, and it's still connecting. The little pop-up window came up indicating that I have mail, but otherwise it wouldn't connect to my contact list. So I cancelled and tried with a secondary yahoo name with the very same messenger icon, and I had no problem connecting.

A quick google search suggested that I download the application anew. I did so, rebooted my laptop and still, I can't connect with my primary, only with my secondary. I should point out that I can connect to the browser-based messenger, however, I like the application and would like to continue using it.

Does anyone have any ideas and suggestions (preferably one that would not wipe out my archive)?

Thank you all in advance.

I had a similar problem a few months ago. What you may want to do is completely delete it from your comp, then re-download the latest version.

Call it a compu-brainfart; sometimes it gets a little lost on what accounts are valid and invalid.

that happened to me as well a few months ago, and uninstalling and reinstalling worked fine for me. I'm not computer savvy either but a friend is a programer and was able to give me some hints on where to start.

Hope this helps.

Thank you all so much for your time and help. :rose:

I have a quick question: if I am to delete the yahoo application and reinstall it, will my archive disappear? For sentimental reasons, I would sort of like to keep it.

Thank you once again.

yeah it would.
You could try turning your computer off for a little while, and leaving it be.
When you boot it back up, let everything load completely before opening anything - including and especially yahoo messenger.
besides that - i'm not sure. like i said in my earlier post - i'm not very computer savvy.
sorry i'm not able to help more.

*sigh* That's what I was afraid of...

I'll try your suggestion tonight before going to bed.

Thank you :rose:

I think I can help you there.

Go to your messenger, go to Contacts>Click on Message Archive. When the message archive opens>Click on File, then Save. This should save your messages to your computer

To save more than one at a time, hold down your Ctl button as you click on each message and when they are highlighted, then click on file and save and name it before saving to your PC.

Hope this helps ya.

Right.
You should be able to save all the contact info/messages/etc by doing that.

If you're still uneasy on if it won't work saving that way, open up those files and just copy/paste into a doc file and save it. Sure, not 100% the same, but everything's there.

Does the solution to uninstall and reinstall work? Mine's playing up as well.

uninstall and reinstall will work yes.

The only reason she's not wanting to uninstall is because of sentimental conversations that she would lose if she uninstalled.

couldn't the old conversations be copied & pasted into a word processing document or something like that?

Thank you once again to all those who replied. :rose:

I took all of your suggestions: I exported the conversations that I wanted to keep, and uninstalled YIM, throwing away all traces of the old program, deleting it, re-installed it and... drum roll please, the same bloody thing happened. I can't sign in with my primary username, only my secondary one. Furthermore, I must have not cleared something properly, because I can access my archives.

I think it needs a spanking or something. :D

Yahoo has been having problems recently. I would say off and on for the past 8 months or so. Skype is also acting up, and FB chat.
