Trump caves and halts tarriffs on Canada

People need to remember, we get rid of our Presidents every 4 years.
Which means a "Trump" can come again.
So while 4 years of insanity feels like a long time when you are in the middle of it, it is a very small window in the grand scheme.
The guy is fucking with the economy of 40 million people (here and billions elsewhere) because....?
Also Canadians should boycott Trump states.
There are maga's in EVERY state.
I can tell you first hand, blue states are not Trumpy at all. Just the odd MAGAtard here and there. Mostly shunned and definitely miserable.
See above.

I see zero need to support your economy when your President is trying to destroy ours.

I have no ill towards you personally, you get it, but you're just one of 350 million.

Something broke in our shining city on a hill and half the country are no more virtuous than Soviet countries.

They are, and always were, envious of Soviet countries. Much of their hatred of Communism was based on envy.

Now that they can act in a Soviet manner they will not let this opportunity pass.

Go read on Reddit on some of comments on the political threads about Trump. Canadians are very aware of the US trying to lure us tourists back. The response is a polite ( or not so polite) "no thanks".

As I write this I do wonder if I will ever set foot in your country again and I can't see why, short of having to attend a family funeral and even then....

My husband and I both have Canadian friends, spread across Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver and we're very aware of that. All of them have said exactly that and I honestly don't fault it. I have cousins in Oz who were going to stop by on the way to Europe but have now rerouted to go thru to Europe via the Gulf for the same reason. There's going to be an impact for sure, but most tourism in the US is internal, so the overall impact's going to have an impact but hopefully not catastrophic. THAT depends on how the economy overall goes.

Trouble is Trump was elected twice, voters seem to have the memories of a flea,so there is a great danger of another ass hole like him being elected in the future.

Ot's going to be risk avoidance from now on. Every country in the world is going to work hard to reduce their exposure to the vagaries of US politics and that's going to mean less trade with the US and diversification or switching to more consistemnt trading partners.

Trump is certainly envious of the adulation that communist leaders get from their subjects. He plays the MAGAt crowd like Hulk Hogan plays the children watching his wrestling shows and you can just see him lap it up.

What I see is a death to the economy by a hundred cuts. Tourism cuts, Government cuts, trade war cuts....all the trickle down cuts....a slow bleed that may turn into a gusher.

Another unintended consequence

Thomas Bard, the owner of a small distillery in Kentucky, tells the Washington Post that his business has been thrown into turmoil ever since President Donald Trump launched a trade war with Canada.
According to Bard, liquor stores in the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Ontario had initially agreed to start selling his bourbon this year before Trump slapped blanket tariffs on Canada and the country responded by pulling American liquor from its shelves. “It’s a huge deal when you get a new customer base,” Bard told the Post. “So for this to be, just be taken away from us... that’s an absolute punch to the gut.”

Bard, whose distillery has also been selling whiskey to liquor stores in Alberta and British Columbia for the past two years, also tells the Post that it won't be easy to make up for the loss of Canadian business with more business in the U.S. given that many states are more highly regulated in terms of liquor distribution than the markets up north. "It’s easier to get into Canada than it is to get into some other states here," he said, while adding that his business is "basically going to have to go back and start from scratch."

Canada is by far the largest export market for small American distilleries, craft breweries and wineries, notes the Post, which means that Trump's trade wars could have devastating impacts on those businesses.

That's a LOT of small business impacted.

It's like what dmallord said on the Economy thread: Canada successfully built a wall to prevent American goods from entering their country, and they got the USA to pay for that wall.

Trump will persist with his nonsense until he has irrevocably run the American economy into a ditch, and then he will declare that situation a national emergency that warrants martial law.
