I agree with this although angry, mediocre, Christian white men are a universal issue, not just an American one.

They regard the granting of equal rights to women, people of colour, etc as an unfair diminishing of their rights. As the OP said they now have to compete on a level playing field and more and more they are failing. They can't cope with the diminished sense of self worth they are feeling and so lash out.
