Ok enough of the xmen....i have a confession to make.

I'm a trekkie, ok there i said it. Offically out of the closet.

Any other fans of star trek here?....or am i on my own on this one?

I had a family friend from China come round my house yesterday. Very rich friend, actually (family business has yearly turnover in the hundred millions. Pound sterling, that is).

She had plastic surgery done.

She's 16 years old.

Apparently, nearly everybody she knows has had something done. Guess what they do??

They have an eyelid put onto their skin. Yes, an EYELID. You know the Chinese/oriental trademark is the single eyelid (whatever you call it). Well, people nowadays have it done that they have a second eyelid (removing their genetic mark). She also had her hair dyed brown and curled.

Her eyes look about 50% larger (having a monolid makes your eyes look smaller, slittier, you know, almond-shaped), and she does look better, but she doesn't look oriental. Well, she does, seeing as how almost all oriental girls have curly brown hair now, but frankly, I find it appalling. She is also complaining that she's too fat (she's size 8). Chinese modern ideal of beauty is to have big eyes, curly brown hair, and a gap between your thighs (i.e. no fat). Also, b-cup breasts are too big.

I hereby vow never to have surgery done to make me more Western in any way. I will retain all my oriental characteristics, and not conform.

UGH.

Such a big deal is made about China standing up to the USA and stuff. Yes, and at the same time, the people are discarding their oriental looks and trying to look more Western. I don't have anything against Westerners (duh, I live in the West), but I do have something against those who seemingly are ashamed of their heritage. Or, at least, follow fashion ridiculously closely. I've a Korean friend whose relatives have asked her several times 'what do you want done?'. Cosmetic surgery is rife in the Orient.

I've watched some Star Trek. I'm not averse to watching it, but I'm not actually somebody who watches a lot of TV. I watched it when I had Sky (Voyager was on EVERY day). And I watched Next Generation too.

that whole plastic surgery things getting well out of control, everyone seems to be doing it.

I think you should be happy with what nature gave you, its whats inside that counts in my opinion.

Star trek tends to be on sky allll the time.

I'm appalled anyone would have (elective) plastic surgery of ANY sort at 16. The deny-your-heritage sort is that much more of a twist.

Have you ever read any of (I'm terrible at names, but I think it was) William Gibson's linked sf short stories "Burning Chrome", "Johnny Mnemonic", novels "Count Zero", "Mona Lisa Overdrive" etc.? Near-future dystopia sorts of stuff. He pictures Asia is the absolute center of no-holds-barred surgery: cosmetic, anti-cosmetic, bionic, memory implants, etc. And one of the pop things to do is for western kids to buzz over to Tokyo to have their eyelids altered to look Asian.....

Give it another 16 years and your rich-kid friend will be having her surgery reversed in order to stay trendy.

And you'll be the hippest kid on your block! (You probably already are, to anyone with any sense.)

Meanwhile, is your friend available? I have a couple of very eligible bachelor sons....

Actually, she recently acquired a boyfriend. He's Korean. She doesn't speak Korean, he doesn't speak Chinese. Which means they speak English together. And her English is, I tell you, terrible. Really awful. Obviously communication is not a big deal for them.

marsipanne- im shocked but not suprised about your friend, its the way the world seems to be going, people trying to conform with some perfect woman/man ideology just like how young girls over here aim to be thin like all the models they see end result- anorexia and however many health issues later in life.You should stay as you are nothing wrong from what i've seen, you dont have two heads or anything.
Pengy- your a trekkie? nothing wrong with that, i watch it now and again but im not obsessed like some. Me im what they call an X-phile (im into the whole aliens, genetic mutants thing i even have the I BELIEVE poster) so go ahead call me sad if you want.

I have to say, I'm not much of a Trekkie myself, even though I saw it first run (well, actually I missed the very first episode, but saw the rest of the first season). I've evolved into more of a Mystery Science Theater 3000 kind of guy. Or Red Dwarf, in small doses.

not much of a trekki either..... but love star wars. Used to read all the books, up until the point when they were havin trouble with those youshan-vong things.

about the plastic surgery debate, to put my two pennies in, i am of the opinion of.... Whatever. And also rich people can think in a diff way as their options in life (econimically, so please no debates about money not being important) are more varied. However this isn't that new a news to me, i kinda like my "slitty eyes" and wouldn't change it for the world, but if i was loaded, all my friends were loaded and i had lived a different life to the one i have experienced...... who knows i might think that getting my eyes to look western was like getting a new pair of shoes or something...... i won't be offended if anyone wants to slate me, i've probably left myself open for a thrashing... and may even deserve it.

Thing is, in China, it's not just the super-rich that are doing this. People are putting their savings towards this kind of stuff. It's mainly the townie people. My cousins, who live in the country, would never do this kind of thing. Or dye their hair brown, for that matter.

The ultra pretty-boy band of China--F4.

They can't sing. They can't act. They became famous by acting in a TV show called Meteor Garden--based on a manga. In the show, they were known as the F4 (no idea why, but they were the cool people in college, who owned yachts and were really up themselves--because of this giving kids bad ideas about ways to behave, this very harmless show was BANNED. ridiculous). Anyway, the four people in the band were obviously cast based on their looks. The four of them, added together, act as well as Keanu did in Matrix Reloaded before the burly brawl. THAT bad. And they can't sing.

But they're pretty and really, really famous in China.

Recently thinking about them because the plastic-surgery friend met the lead singer (top left). She says he's better-looking in real life.

They look like manga boys, but not as good-looking. Manga-boys are ridiculously gorgeous. In my opinion. In other people's opinions they might as well be girls... but that's me.

I dont see the point in plastic surgery. The only reason to have it is because you have deep confidence issues with the way you look. if you just deal with why you want the surgery in the first place you'll feel a lot better. Because I am happy with the way I look (I weigh 19 stone by the way) I find that looks dont matter to me because of it. Finding my own inner peace allows me to se the inner beauty of others.

...ahem....

OK, enough of the disney moment, I like star trek but I cant stand the first series' with captain Kirk. Love starwars though. Over the years I have accumulated 2 lightsabers. Sad but at least I didn't buy them.

Pengy, you found my eyes???? Those were a LONG way back! Just a hint, I first started posting on this thread when it was in the page 30s. I reckon eyes (and mouth actually) are in the 40s or 50s. Legs ought to be in 80s or 90s.

Or I could just save a lot of trouble and repost them all. And those eyes pictures were real creepy. Scary, I say. Attaching new eyes picture. The other one was too weird. Do NOT look for it!

Pengy- its good to know im not the only one left, what did you think to the earlier series? i personally think they had a bit more of an "edge" until scully started to believe what mulder had been spouting all the time, dont get me wrong i think they all were great they just had something extra.(As an aside who was your favourite character? mine was the lone gunman trio langly, frohike and byers, apart from scully who i think is really hot).
If you cant find marsipannes legs try going back about 10-20 pages they are there somewhere.
Star Wars yeah love that too, i even like the new episodes i know a lot of people hated them the whole love story bit but its there to explain the back story of luke and leia but jarjar binks is totally annoying so they are not perfect i'll admit but good enough to stand next to the originals (cant wait til they come out on dvd not long now woohoo).
