Hell yeah!! Mars was portrayed as less of a wuss in Roman mythology, but in Greek mythology, Ares was totally the idiotic rush into battle type. Really useless god. Having him on your side was pointless. Even humans managed to get him. Him vs. Athena. Athena wins 100%. He goes running home back to Zeus to complain. He's definitely a wuss!!!
 
So you're comparing two very different religions in the ways that their gods of war exist?

Typically speaking, in most ancient cultures the warrior god was exactly that. They're not meant to be intelligent, they're meant to be the embodiment of courage and combat prowess. Legends from this period often show how although courage and ability were to be valued they were often seen as being only perfected when they were combined with other traits of gods.

Plus Mithras was the more potent of the roman war gods and was worshipped much more even in times of apparent christian supremecy.

Thing about the romans is that they assimilated many of the gods into their own tales, but changed them at the same time. 'Mars' as such was not a particularly bad god, but Ares was crap! He was a little cowardly, rather useless, and was not a good fighter either. He represented the stupid idiot charging into battle without good preparation. Mars was different though, but involved some of the Ares tales. Mithras is a totally different matter altogether.
