Nothing in particular...

...I just dropped in to say hello.

I've got a cold, and am obviously worthless at work. Usually I'm clandestinely worthless.

Evening all, just dropping by..

I'd also make an announcement:

I am no longer ill!! After one month!!! GAH!
I am also really hungry for some reason. I'm overeating (again!). Ate so much spaghetti bolognaise the other day.

I'm also watching Gone With the Wind. Got about an hour so far. I lurve Rhett Butler. Makes me angry at Marilyn Monroe though. Apparently she stressed out Clark Gable so much he got heart problems. Moue. I want Clark Gable to be alive! I wish there were more historical romance stories. I mean, the Rhett Butler kind of alpha male is really quite run-of-the-mill in historical romances. I mean, honestly, reading bodice-rippers really does ruin the male population for me. A few days ago I came to the depressing conclusion that there weren't enough good-looking men in the world. What's even worse, I decided that I was only going to go for monks. Then yesterday, it became gypsies. I suppose that's more of a guy thing though. Gypsy girls eh. But my friend is dead set on monks. She just loves them. Since she's more into girls anyhoo, I asked her what she thought of nuns, and she just said nah. But monks were cool.

Incidentally, I may be developing a minor crush on somebody. He's very clever, and surprisingly, rather good-looking in a classical mediterranean kind of way. Isn't that cool? Rather sculpted fellow. But, don't really know him, he's just got potential. If he's got intelligence and wit, then hurrah! But who knows. I wish there were more Rhett Butler-esque guys in the world. I must correct myself. Rhett Butler is cooler than the average alpha male. Dear lord, that was an odd little phrase 'average alpha male'.

Yay! not ill. Lucky you!

Of course there's few good looking men in the world. Lets assume that half the population of the world is male (technically speaking, there are more women in the world than men), let us then assume that your particular desires are for men between 18 and 26. that cuts down about 3 billion to about 1 billion. Let's then assume that men born with facial disfigurements, unpleasant scars, B.O., bad habits, overweight, uneven features (anything that could be described as 'ugly') and men born of a particular ethnic origin are not desireable. That cuts out about 80% of men so now you have about 20 million men who are 'attractive' Now remove the percentage of men who are either married or gay that would count for about 15 million. Now you've got 5 million men in the world who are 'attractive' and available. These 5 million men are spread out all over the world. Now remove those who have an attitude you disagree with (e.g. Neo Nazis, Anarchists, the insane etc...) and you have about 2.5 million. Remove anyone who has an intelligence level you dislike (either too smart or too stupid) and you have about 1 million. The chance of you meeting one of these attractive, available men that meet your standards is about 0.0000000000003%. That's assuming that all you have to do is pick one from the entire population of the world, therefore not taking into account travel, language, money, job, origin (i.e. gypsey, monk etc...), religion, time and whether or not YOU meet HIS standards.

(I got depressed one day and worked that out with women instead of men. Its a happy thought isn't it?)

"Frankly, my dear, I'm going to build a dam."

Plas, you need to double check your math. Take away 80% of 1 billion and you're left with 200 million, not 20.

But hey, what's a power of ten between friends?

What I really want to know is how I managed to catch Marsi's case of galloping crud without ever being in the same city with her, never mind any exchange of bodily fluids.

You're right. In fact after I got to thinking about it I went and found the old file that I mentioned so here's the whole formula. I have to admit that my memory of figures is a little off so that's why i was a little off on the numbers. Here's the full thing:

Meeting Mr/Mrs Right

In this world we are always searching for the right person. That perfect match that will compliment our lives in every way. However, people go through their lives often never even gaining a clue as to who that person might be. Today I decided that the best way to express this was through the use of mathmatical formula. So below is the resulting calculation with an explanation. Please bear in mind this is VERY rough. I am working on global averages to simplify the procedure.

(((P/G(O))/A/S/V = X) ((M*T) = Y)

(X/P) * (Y/P) = Z

P is Population of the Earth (currently approximately 6 billion (6,000,000,000)
G is Gender based on O which is sexual Orientation, essentially it determines how many genders are being selected from. (heterosexual requires a division of gender, Bi sexual does not)
A is age range (use as fraction of average human life span (e.g. Searching for a partner of between ages 20 and 30 is a ten year period. Average human life span is 80, 80 divided by 10 is 8 and therefore A is 8))
S is standards (for the sake of argument there are 3 standards, high, medium and low. High standards cause a search from only the 75th percentile (e.g. 75% are undesirable) while low standards search from the 25th percentile)
V is availability (this takes into account sexual orientation of prospective partner as well as marriage status (or availabilty). Recent studies suggest that based on averages, one third of all humans are homosexual and at least another third are married)
X is the number of prospective partners that meet all standards
M is the average number of people met ('met' is used to describe all people spoken to in a day in a social situation) (takes into account gatherings, periods of solitude, evenings out etc...) On average, human beings encounter approximately 4000 people in their lives, an average human life is 80 years (29200 days) and that equals 0.14 people a day.
T stands for the time speans searching for their perfect partner, an average of 10950 days (30 years). This number reflects the average amount of time in which they are single and looking. It does not take into account time spent in a relationship, illness or other change of circumstances.
Y is number of people met while searching (30 years)
Z is the chance you will meet your perfect partner

For example, a 20 year old straight man with high standards is looking for a perfect woman.between the ages of 18 and 28

(6,000,000,000 / 2) / 8 = 375,000,000 (no of prospectives within age and gender bracket)
(100 / 375, 000,000) * 25 = 9375,0000 (this is the 75th percentile)
9375, 0000 / 3 = 3125,0000 (no of 'perfect' women in the world) (0.5208%)

0.14 * 10950 = 1533 (an average human meets 1533 people in 30 years)

(312,500,00 / 6,000,000,000) = 0.0052083333333333333333 (this is the chance that someone on earth is a perfect partner)
*
(1533 / 6,000,000,000) = 0.0000002555 (this is the possibility that you will meet someone)

0.00520833333333333 * 0.0000002555 = 0.00000001302075

Or

0.000000013%

(this is the chance that he will meet his perfect woman)

Remember, this figure is based on global averages, it does not take into consideration such things as population density, country of origin, religion, attitude etc...

My thought for the day: "Dare to be stupid!!"

Thanks Plas, my head hurts now

Hope you're having a good day ;)

lol, sorry for making your head hurt. Still, imagine what it must be like for someone like me (who certainly does not specialise in mathmatics). I actually did that when bored and depressed. It kept me busy at least. But still, doing that for entertainment? How weird am I? (hopefully the answer is 'very'. Either that or 'oran plum chin mo flange gurann pim eeyow eeyow fur ter boot')

By the way, i'm in a good mood today :D I wonder if they make mood-stones for internet based discussion sites? It might help other people out.

Remember! Dare to be stupid!

Yup, it does seem a strange thing to do for entertainment

They ought to put a mood setting on here then you can click on a box to let everyone know how you feel.

Have to admit I'm in a very good mood today :D

lol, I think mine would vary from 'ecstatic' to 'psycopathic' to 'AAAARRRGGHH He's coming!!!' :D

By the way WW, are you some kind of lurker? You always manage to reply to my posts about 2 minutes after I do them!

More likely to be "'AAAARRRGGHH He's coming!!!' " most days :p

Me, a lurker ? Nahhhhhhhhhhh :D

Well, personally I don't think most people think that when they see me. Still, its difficult to adequately describe 'gibbering, incomprehensible terror' on the internet :D

*Chuckles* Terror ? Never ! Running for a dictionary and the aspirin maybe ;)

Probability & statistics

Plas,

You were doing all right figuring out how many 'perfect match' people there are in the world, but not in how likely you are to meet one of them.

You came up with the proportion of 'perfect matches' being 0.005208333 of the total population of the world, which is to say one-half of one percent, or one person in two hundred. Fine. And I won't argue with how many new people you meet per day, 0.14 -- that's about one a week, which sounds OK. So your chances of meeting your 'perfect match' ON ANY ONE DAY is 0.14 * 0.005, or 0.0007, or one in 1400. But you don't curl up and die if you don't meet your perfect match on day one. You have that same one-in-fourteenhundred chance the next day and every day. In fact, on average, if you're looking for one person in two hundred, and only meet one (new) person per week, it'll probably take about two years to find him/her. You can simulate this with percentile dice and repeated rolls if you like.

Z.

like I say there were some things that it didn't take into account. After all I'm not a professional mathmatician. Basically its like saying you've a big bag of 6,000,000,000 marbles and o.5208% of them are blue. 0.14 of a marble drops out each day so the chance that one is blue is about 0.000000013%. its not taking into account much else, after all its just a basic formula. I think if I was to include anything else it would make it a lot more complicated and the number a lot smaller.

Pretty good. Went to a quiz last night and we ended up coming third. It wasn't great but then there were only two of us so I consider that pretty good :)

Sounds like fun, not a bad result either........unless of course there were only three teams  :D

there were 8, the smallest apart from us were a team of 4. I think we did alright.
