Things you should know about manga:

1. It is not for kids only.
2. There are many, many genres of manga. About as much as book/films etc.
3. Manga goes from cutesy-sick to VERY hardcore pornography
4. There are lots of pretty people in it.
5. Manga that you read in English will be diluted to reduce sexuality/nudity/violence.

Manga Genres (eta. there are genres such as romance, action, horror, detectives within these catch-all genres):

Shoujo (girls' manga--Sailor Moon, Cardcaptors anybody? You may know about these mangas but something like Demon Diary also counts and that has an interesting little bit at the end where a girl goes "You know where I come from, I'm a queen [cue clothing change--returns wearing lots of leather, chains, and bearing a whip] a BONDAGE queen"--and this made it into the English translation)

Shonen (boys' manga--Love Hina is a pretty good example of this. GTO probably counts too. Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, Digimon etc. probably fall in here)

Shoujo-ai (light female-female action)
Shonen-ai (light male-male action--this genre is immensely popular among teenage girls)

Hentai!! (means 'perverted'--and it really DOES get perverted. REally perverted. The most extreme literotica stuff comes near to what Hentai is like. Tentacles, tentacles, tentacles! Huge breasts and penises. Lots of em. Robots, nymphos, animals, everything. And I mean EVERYTHING)

Hentai includes yaoi (hardcore male-male), and yuri (hardcore female-female)

GTO (example of mainstream boys' manga (15-20 I suppose)) stands for 'Great Teacher Onizuka' and this 'great teacher' is a flunker who becomes a teacher simply for the girls. To see lots of girls, preferably naked and with large appendages. This popular manga (which is available in English with an 18+ rating) includes this Onizuka breaking and entering their (his female students') houses, paying them to make porn, sexually assaulting students etc. etc. This is mainstream, I repeat.

Love Hina is teen geekboy madness. I quite like it though. I've got a couple of volumes. Here's the front cover of one:

Honestly, George is truly my 'fantasy' man. Strictly fantasy, not reality. I think I'd be emotional mush after he'd be done with me. Probably would be in the psychiatric ward or something.
