After Skylar went out the window and started down the rope of sheets Gerry turned back to face the door. As he did so the door came crashing down. He didn't hesitate, the first shot his the first guy through the door right in the center of the chest. That gave Gerry and additional second, because the guy went down right in the doorway.

Gerry used the additional moment to climb out the window and to grab the sheets. As he did this he fired a second shot through the window; hitting the next guy between the eyes. Gerry tucked the weapon into the waistband of his shorts and climbed down the rope. He thought he saw three sets of feet unnder the door, so, it was just a matter of time before he would have to deal with that.

As he hit the ground he turned and started to run toward where the motorcycle, and hopefully Skylar, were. As he ran a bullet ripped through his left shoulder and spun him around. The fact that the bullet spun him around may have saved his life, becuse the next bullet whizzed past his head, and would have been a direct hit if he hadn't spun.

He fell to the ground. It took him only second to get his bearings. He knew where the motorcycle was.... now he just had to get there. He pushed himself up with his good arm and made his way to the motorcycle. Hopefully, Skylar had waited an extra second.

When he got there he saw Skylar holding her wrist and noticed she was bleeding a little. "Are you ok?" he asked before climbing on without waiting for an answer. He was going to have to ride with one arm, this would be interesting.

Skylar heard shots ringing out throughout the hotel and fearful tears filled her eyes for both Gerry and herself. Then she saw him running towards her and relief seeped into her... until she noticed the blood dripping down his arm. He asked her at the exact same time that she did of he wad OK.

But he didn't answer or wait for her answer. And she was glad of that. He sent the bike careening through the parking lot and out onto the streets. Skylar felt sock to her stomach and she tried to cling to Gerry with her good arm and she saw the blood streaming from a hole in hos shoulder. He had been shot. She squeezed her eyes shut and fought to control her stomach.

She nervously glanced backwards over her shoulder but didn't see any headlights. Turning back she knew the bleeding in Gerry's shoulder had to stop or he wouldnt be able to drive... and she couldn't do it with the wrist she was now pretty sure was broken.

She shakily took her good arm away from Gerry's body, praying he didn't do anything drastic like a sharp turn or hit a huge bump. She clung to the seat as hard she she could with her thighs... suddenly thankful for all the riding she did. She took her good hand and pressed it, palm down, to the wound on Gerry's shoulder. She felt his large body tense up and winced, knowing it must hurt like hell.

Gerry drove like hell. He was not concerned about being pulled over by the police, because, at this moment, that would be a good thing. however, he did not want to go to a police station, because they, whoever they were, would probbly be waiting outside.

Thoughts ran through his head as he drove the bike with one hand. How did they find them? He had been careful to pick the spot out. Only three people in the bureau knew where the spot was. That had to be it. There was a mole. This would really complicate things.

He felt Skylar press her hand against the bullet wound and he screamed and winced from the pain. He had to find a place for them to settle in for some time, and a place where he could treat his shoulder. Little did he know that he would have to play doctor on Skylar too.

Skylar remained behind Gerry as they drove, trying to hang on the best she could and to keep pressure on his wound. His scream of pain had torn through her body but she knew she needed to get the bleeding to slow... but that was hard with all of the jostling of the bike.

It seemed they drove forever. Skylar clinging haphazardly to Gerry as they did. Her butt started to hurt and then went numb from the vibrations. Finally Skylar felt and heard te bike slow down and glaced up to see where they were.

Gerry pulled the motorcycle into a fancy hotel. There was no way they would look for them in a place like this. He handed Skylar a credit card and told her to go in and get a room for five days. "After you get the room, go to the back entrance and let me in. Take your time. I am going to hide the bike."

It was then that he realized that Skylar was hurt. "What happened? Are you ok?" He could tell she was in pain. I will take care of it when we get up to the room. I am sorry this is happening to you."

He watched her walk into the hotel lobby. He drove down the street to a parking garage. Rode the bike up to one of the middle levels, and parked it. He ripped his shirt and wiped any blood off ot the motorcycle. He then used the ripped part of the shirt to press against his wound. He didn't want to leave a blood trail.

Skylar looked up and saw they were coming to a huge really expensive looking hotel. Wow... she thought to herself. Gerry pulled up to the lobby door and handed Skylar a hotel giving her instructions. It was then he noticed she was definitely in pain but she waved him off.

"I will be ok" she said softly and then turned to go do as he had requested, using the name that was on the card to register them under. It was a name she didn't recognize. She got the keys and walked to a back door and leaned against the doorjamb, cradling her wrist as she waited for Gerry to show up.

When he did, he was shirtless so Skylar quickly opened the door and they walked silently to the room.

"We need to take care of your shoulder" Sky said quietly. She was too quiet as she walked to the bathroom to start running some hot water. Her wrist was throbbing unmercifully ... almost enough to bring tears to her eyes, but she ignored it and concentrated on Gerry. He needed care the most.

Gerry followed Skylar to the room. She was being very quiet, so, he knew she was in pain. When the went into the room, he sat on the desk. He watched Skylar go into the bathroom and assumed that she was going in to get the ice bucket."

He heard water running, and realized that she was going to try to treat him first. "Skylar, take the ice bucket and go fill it with ice. Don't put the plastic bag in the bucket, just fill the bucket."

He knew she would object and when she looked out of the bathroom at him he said to her, "Just do as I say. We will take care of each other. Get the ice first."

She heard Gerry tell her to go get the ice bucket filled. She turned to face him and tell him no she needed to take care of him first. But the look he gave her and his tone of voice held room for no objections.

Sighing, she picked up the bucket with her good hand and headed out the door without argument... proving again she was in pain. She walked down the hall and passed an old rich looking couple who gave her an odd look. She glanced down and saw her baggy clothes, dotted with some blood, as well as her swollen and bruise wrist and winced. Wow... she probably looked horrible.

She found the ice machine and filled the bucket then headed back to their room where Gerry was waiting. He was still sitting there and she walked slowly over to him.

"Gerry... we need to get your shoulder bandaged before you lose too much blood" she said in a quiet voice, her eyes pleading with him not to argue with her.

"Skylar, trust me. I know what I am doing. Get the plastic bag and fill it with ice and keep it on your wrist. You need to keep the swelling down. You can help me take care of my shoulder with your good hand."

He watched her go into the bathroom to get the plastic bag. Then he picked up the ice bucket and followed her into the bathroom. Better to do all of the medical work in the bathroom..... will keep blood off the carpet.

He placed the ice bucket on the counter and took a handful of ice. "You open the bag and I will fill it." Working together they filled the ice bag and Gerry placed it on her wrist. Then he put a wash cloth into the sink and ran the hot water.

"Get me a bottle of alcohol out of the mini-bar. It doesn't matter what kind. Gin, whiskey, or vodka will be fine. I need to disinfect the wound." He waited for her to come back to the bathroom with the bottle.

Skylar heaved a sigh and then walked into the bathroom to do what he said. She didn't want to argue with him when he was hurt... and she was hurting herself too much to do much arguing anyway. Gerry was right behind her with the ice and they filled it together. Gerry then placed the ice bag on Skylar's wrist. She winced and hissed in a pained gasp but said nothing.

He asked her to grab some alcohol and she walked back out balancing the ice on her wrist. She grabbed some vodka and brought it back to Gerry. "Do you want me to do it?" She asked him quietly as she gazed at the wound there. It looked incredibly painful and she hated to see him hurting like that. Especially because of her. She bit her lip and heaved in a shaky breath as she waited for his answer.

"Yes. Pour the whole bottle over it. Try to pour it right into the bullet hole." He grabbed another washcloth and put it in his mouth. He would use that to bite down on when Skylar poured the vodka on the wound. It would also help him stifle any scream.

He nodded to her and she poured the alcohol onto the wound. He bit hard on the cloth and it was all he could do to keep from screaming. Then he took the hot, wet wash cloth and placed it over the wound.

He continued to bite on the cloth. He took her good hand and placed it over the wash cloth. He put his hand over hers to apply pressure to the wound. He released his bite on the cloth. "Just press hard against it Sky. We need to stop the bleeding."

Skylar's hand shook violently as she held the bottle above his wound. And then she slowly poured the contents into the hole. She felt Gerry's entire body stiffen up like a board and heard his low muffled groans of pain. Tears formed in her eyes and spilled down her cheeks, a few landing on his back, as he placed her hand on top of the now washcloth-covered wound and pressed down.

He asked her to press down hard to stop the bleeding and she did as she was asked with her good hand as she cradled the ice pack between her hurt wrist and chest. She had no words to explain how sorry she was to Gerry so she didn't speak, just stood behind him biting her lip.

Gerry was starting to feel light-headed. He sat on the edge of the tub. Skylar was still putting pressure on the wound. He had lost a lot of blood. He needed to lay down. They both needed some rest.

"Lay a towel on the bed. Double it up so that the blood doesn't soak through to the sheets. They won't miss a towel. They will wonder what happened to the sheets if we have to get rid of it, because there is blood on it."

While Skylar put the towel on the bed, Gerry struggled to his feet. He walked into the room and made his way to the bed. He positioned himself on the bed so that his shoulder would be in the center of the towel. He laid down and looked at Skylar. "You need to get some sleep. We will have a lot to do tomorrow. You need to be rested."

Skylar saw that Gerry was fading fast and almost began to panic, but then he asked her to spread some towels on the bed. No matter how much her wrist hurt, his injury was worse and she hurried to do as he asked, knowing he was right. She spread the towels out, making sure to place them so that when they slept, if she accidentally touched him, his injured shoulder was on the opposite side from her.

Gerry came in and laid down, asking her to get some rest as well. Skylar laid down in the bed beside him and remained staring at the ceiling for a while. Tears welled in her eyes again and she fought them, but they escaped anyway, sliding silently down her cheeks and onto the pillow on either side of her face. She couldn't believe everything that had happened to them that night and it was taking its toll on her.

The bullet wound, the loss of blood, and the events of the last few hours had Gerry in a state of total exhaustion and he fell asleep as soon as he hit the pillow. It was a sleep that was totally sound.

While he slept he dreamt. Skylar was the focus of his dreams. Everything was about her. He dreamt about the previous night, and his dream did not include the shootout. It left that out and had Gerry and Skylar together all night in the room.

In his sleep his hand rested on her thigh. It was an unconscious act.... or was it.

Skylar didn't find it nearly as easy to fall asleep. She lay there listening to Gerry's deep, even breathing and tried to calm herself but her mind was whirling. Finally at least two hours after she had lay down she fell asleep. It was a restless sleep, full of dreams... some good some bad. Some.were of she and Gerry together on the bed which was wonderful, but almost all ended in a shootout.

At one point she jerked awake to find Gerry's large hand placed on her thigh. The touch was comforting and soothed her mind. She immediately rolled, avoiding her bad wrist which hurt incredibly bad, and and laid her head against his good shoulder, careful not to jostle him or wake him up.

Immediately she fell back asleep and this time it was deep and dreamless. The next thing she became aware of was waking up plastered to his side, her right wrist (the injured on) draped haphazardly across his belly, her cheek pressed to his chest, and her legs tangled with hos beneath the sheets.

She lifted her head slowly to see if he was awake.

He hadn's slept that well in a long time. Despite the bullet wound to his shoulder, in spite of the pain, he was able to sleep soundly for a few hours. When he woke up Skylar was draped across him; her head on his chest... their legs entangled. He didn't move, because he did not want to disturb her.

When she lifted up and looked at him their eyes met, and he said, "Good morning Skylar. I hope you slept well." He could see she was in pain. "I need to get a look at that wrist of yours, and you will probably need to go to a store today to get us a few things. I would do it, but I think I might attract some attention if my shoulder continues to bleed."

He laid there for a second. They were a terrific pair. They were on the run from killers and they both could barely move. This was going to be his biggest challenge ever, but he was committed to protecting Skylar.

Sky gave Gerry a small smile when she saw that he was awake. She could tell her was still hurting as well.

"I slept ok eventually" she said softly. "I can handle going to the store" she glanced over at him and them voiced his thoughts. "Aren't we just the best pair ever?" she said sarcastically but smiling. "Hows your shoulder? I know it must hurt... God Gerry... shouldn't we... like go to the hospital?" she asked worriedly, unaware of the dangers going to a hospital might present.

"What if your shoulder gets infected? And I'm 95% sure my wrist is broke ... shouldn't we see an actual doctor??"

Her green gaze was full of worry as she stared down at him. She was still laid across hos chest and didn't want to move... it felt too right being there.

"Skylar, those guys being ble to find us is a serious problem. There were only three people who knew where I was; all three are with the FBI. That means that there is someone inside there that is very dirty." He gave that a few minutes to sink in.

"If I go to the hospital the police will be involved. Doctors are required to report all gunshot wounds to the police. I am sure that all local police bands are being monitored. That would bring the bad guys to us pretty quickly. You can go to the hospital, because that wouldn't draw too much attention."

Help me up so I can take a look at your wrist. Let me see if it is broken. Don't worry too much about infection in my shoulder... the vodka will take care of most of that. It is the loss of blood that is my biggest concern."

After Skylar helped him to sit up he took a look at her wrist. He felt her wrist and could see that Skylar wanted to scream. "Skylar, I do not think it is broken, but of course I am not a doctor. If you want to go to the ER you should."

Skylar shook her head firmly.

"I'm not going unless you go. I... I trust you. If you say its not broken I believe you. I must be a wimp huh?" she asked giving him a small smile and trying to make light of the situation. His words had scared her but she didn't want to let it show.

"Ok... so... I noticed last night there's a department store across the road... it looks expensive as hell but I can probably find you a shirt in there since yours is no more... what else will we need?"

She was trying to be brave. To focus on things other than what had happened to them as she fought the rising panic within her body.

"Skylar, I can't go to the hospital. Not now anyway. Here is what you need to get. You need to get some gauze, some adhesive tape, peroxide, and some advil. Look and see if they have some type of a wrist brace. If not, I will make a brace for you from the supplies you get. Get me a shirt and a pair of shorts. Get yourself some clothes. You look pretty ridiculous in my sweatpants that are all cut up. Get anything you want." He handed her a credit card. Do not worry about the cost.

Gerry thought for a few minutes. Find some food. Buy some stuff that you can bring back here and buy enough that we will have a couple of days worth of food. we will be able to go to the hotel restaurant once I can hide the fact I have been shot."

He gave her a look that sent the message that everything was going to be ok. He reached out with his good arm and put his hand behind her head. he pulled her close to him and kissed her on the forehead.

Skylar grabbed a pen and a piece of paper from the desk and scribbled down everything he said. Most of it wouldn't be in the store she had seen across the street so she knew she'd have tonfond some sort of Walmart or something. She'd ask the desk on the way out.

When he was done he assured her they would be ok with one speaking glance and then pulled her close kissing her forehead.

She leaned into the embrace, inhaling softly and sighed. "Ok... I will go get this stuff" she said softly. She kissed beneath his jaw and stroked it softly with her hand before turning and walking out the door.

***

She was in luck that there was a Target right down the street within walking distance... she couldn't drive the bike with her wrist. She wasn't sure how Gerry had managed it the night before.

She walked there quickly, feeling jumpy and nervous, always startled when anyone got too close to her. She felt like a damn criminal. Like everyone was out to get her.

She made quick work of the shopping list and then hurried back to the hotel, her arms loaded with bags. With no hand to open the door she kicked at it with her shoe to get Gerry's attention.

While Skylar was gone Gerry used his diposable phone to call the one person in the FBI that he knew he could trust. He talked to him briefly making sure that nobody could trace the call. He told the guy he would call him back soon.

He sat in the chair and plnned their next move. Once they were both strong enough to travel they would head for the countries midsection. He thought about connections he had in Iowa, Missouri, even as far north as South Dakota. He would spend some time plotting their next step.

Suddenly, there was banging at the door. Who could that be? He picked up the gun and went to the door. He looked through the peep hole and was relieved to see Skylar. he opened the door and let her in... grabbing a couple of bags from her.

Gerry swung open the door, gun in tow, and she winced. Probably hadn't been her brightest idea to beat on the door! He grabbed a few bags and she sighed.

"Thanks that shits heavy" she said giving him a small smile. "sorry if I startled you.. didn't have an extra hand".

She helped him lay everything she had bought out on the table... all the necessary supplies as well as some food, an outfit for him and a pair of jeans and a tshirt for her... as well as some new panties and two new bras. She shrugged when he looked at them.

"Its only fun to go commando when you're trying to be sexy" she said and smiled. "So what donwendo about your shoulder?" she asked, instantly more worried about him than herself.

After helping her put the items down, and looking over her purchases Gerry gave Skylar an odd look. "Oh, now that I have a gaping hole in my shoulder you don't want to look sexy for me anymore?"

He managed a little laugh. "Ok. Get some gauze" while she opened the package, he took the bloody washcloth off the wound. "Now take one of the gauze pads and pour peroxide on it and try to dad it around the wound. It will bubble up as it hits the open wound but that is good." He prepared for her to start cleaning the wound and he whinced when she did. "Now pour some of the peroxide over the wound and cover the wound qith a clean gauze pad."

After she finished that, he told her to get the tape and wrap it around his shoulder to hold the gauze in place. Once they were finished he said, "Ok, your turn." he reached for the tape and began to wrap it around her wrist. He made it tight enough to support, but not so tight as to cut off circulation. When he was finished wrapping he asked her, "Is that ok? If it is too tight, let me know."
