Veganism and Raw Foods.

Is anyone here into or familiar with what I'm talking about? :)

I don't know much about raw food diets but could you give an example of what one would eat for a dinner meal since I might want to try it? Links to descriptions are fine.

I tried to start eating healthier about 15 years ago but all I do is try to eat less of the bad and more good stuff, and smaller portions. I do like to eat and it is fairly fundamental to my social life.

I have been looking into the raw food lifestyle more and more and it is looking pretty good. Mere vegetarianism wasn't good enough for me and couldn't control my blood ammonia levels but once I went vegan and cut out the dairy stuff I haven't had to take any of the goo medicine to control ammonia. I've recently cut out pretty much all breads and starchy carbs, grains, potatoes, etc... and in the past week or so of that it seems that my skin is beginning to see improvements. So I have been looking around and it seems that maybe leaning further towards a raw food lifestyle might be in my future. It also seems to be the direction that my body is pushing me towards naturally.

It can be good, but also needs careful research as some foods such as carrots which have long been believed to be great raw, actually have very little nutritional value until boiled, and even more if then pureed. Similarly, tomatoes are great for anti cancer diets, but only if cooked first. So while raw can be healthy, like most things, it isn't a blanket rule.

Wait, WHERE do you live?! I've paid $1 EACH for avocados around here!

Seriously, I'm not sure what happened because later in the week at another store in the same chain they were 97 cents per avocado. I HAD to take advantage of that deal. Maybe it was some strange MLK Jr. Day deal?

More likely they were ready to be used RIGHT AWAY - perfectly ripe - and they couldn't keep them!

If they weren't too ripe, it was probably a pricing mistake. Either way, it's an awesome deal.

I agree that lettuce wraps are a great idea to cut back on breads. I'm a BIG fan of breads but I LOVE lettuce wraps. The problem with lettuce is that it doesn't keep well. For that reason I use other greens like cabbage. Turnip and/or collard greens might work okay but I remember picking these greens and they were prickly on my hands.

OK this thread is officially torture. I want veggies more than anything on the planet at the moment, and it's a serious no go at this point in time.

Me too... But I'm back on "gentle soup" and rice saltines for a bit. *sigh*

Christ. Everywhere you go on the Internet and mention vegetarianism, people freak the fuck out. Twitter Facebook, Lit, only forums FOR vegetarians are safe from this kind of bullshit. I'm sick and tired of people judging the lifestyle I choose to live as somehow deviant. People tell me shit like "I LOVE MEAT" and "bacon is gooooood" and "ewwwww tofu" and I'm fucking tired of it. I'm not blaming YC here completely, but he is a contributor to a problem that is fucking EVERYWHERE online. People HATE vegetarians. Why the fuck are we so goddamn threatening? Why does MY choice have to be commented on by OTHER PEOPLE all the time? FUCK.

Me, I tend to flinch as well, but generally in a 'my father is a butcher and you just said a swear' kind of way. it's very ingrained.

Once I get over it, I tend to get very curious as to people's reasonings, principles, beliefs, whether they're bothered by the fact that I'm carving up a rare steak next to their houlumi and veggie stack, and things like that.

I admire the discipline it takes, especially for those who go vegan, and further. I know it would be good for me, but I can't seem to bring myself to cut out so many things I like.

That, and getting GOOD fresh produce around here can be a bit difficult at times, the quality is usually average at best.

Now, organic wine on the other hand.... :D

Actually, no, they weren't ready yet. Some are still not ready. About one a day has ripened to a satisfactory level. That's perfect for me. Perhaps someone made an error. I went in the store for "movie candy" and couldn't pass up that deal.

:D

I can empathize. I've had people ready to hate me for being veggie ALL my life. Particularly when I wasn't in private church schools, (the church was veggie or at least that was the doctrine), once out of them I learned to get in the closet or be attacked.

Now, at 49, people, restaurants and so on are more open to it than ever, yet they are mostly still hateful about it.

If I get so much as a cold, my IL's say it's because I'm veggie. Never mind that I'm healthier than the vast majority of people I know, even those several decades younger than me. No, all the things wrong with me stem from being veggie.

Thanks. I don't mind flares when I've done something stupid that I know is going to make me sick (but I've reached the point where that doesn't happen very often anymore.) but when I'm behaving and all that, it gets tiresome. :rose:
