Actually the expected end for Holt would be for him to die trying to kill the four of them or succeed and then as vincent so eloquently put it swallow that baretta of his.

But I agree the Whedon twist and the more satisfying end would be to make him have a happy ending.

Thinking that Darya being there might not be conducive to someone living if they let him escape without paying for hurting Karena that could be bad but then there is the angle of Holt seeing that poisoning Karena damaged more than just her... Ideas bouncing around.
