Village Warriors II:War Captain and the Islands of Empire

HHHHmmmmm....I like it Mantra I really like it....you will get a bunch of minor rewards for your work. I will think more on it...Anything to write about home?

Jedi_Khan glad it will help you....then and look for a reward after you post

Jedi_Khan For a good question in addition to your starting package you receive....

50 Officers (Samurai), (Each is armed with two swords, another hand weapon, bow, and a dagger, and each officer has two Men-at-Arms acting as body guards.)

Every officer has 1-3 personal horses, and a cart with wagoneer and a metal worker (armor and sword repair).

Each officer has his wife, his son or daughter with him, and another random family member. Also each member has 2 to 5 servants and tents for all followers.

This group of officers is also accompanied by 100 Asian Archers (no armor only peasant clothes, long knives, bows and arrows) and 30 Barbarian guides (hide armor, long swords and axes, wood shields).

It is good to ask questions people.

Mantra...

I am interested in your details about how you find your home island when you return....How you got there. Perhaps the last of your warchest pays some "independant contractors," or former Imperial Navy to sail you home or whatever you come up with but no keeping the fleet his time around...lol

Rewards for being first and setting up a model for the rest...

After three years of campaigning you have much booty...and there is even some of it you want. Your enemy doesn't have really better weapons then you. You have piles of stone age axes and spears. Primative and well made the rock used is super hard.

You also have a large collection of animal hides which include bears, wolves, and more exotic animals like lions, tigers and even mammoth. Many of them are used by soldiers to keep warm and when you have come up short of armor they are used in a pinch.

You have captured a large stone Idle from the North Men...big heavy and ugly it is still a trophy, and after three counter attacks to take it back you weren't going to just leave it for them.

Other things picked up on your tour of duty....
You know it is against your policy and imperial law, but you take your soldier's concubines with you when you pull out. Now we are not talking the prostitutes you came with...they're already, but during your tour of duty virtually ever legionare takes an Asian concubine (some two or three). They were from one of the large hill tribes and many are skilled at farming and know how to make spears and long knives. During your time of war you were treatied to their dances and music fire side.

The only thing issued by the Empire to you when you first arrived was enough Yurts for you and your men. They're well buit and hav held up well in the worst of weather. Since losing peronnel many followers have moved into them.

I have another question: when you say "every officer," does that mean only this group of 50 or all the officers in my kingdom?

Name: Sindri Hallstein
Island size: large
Sex: Male
Height: 6’
Weight: 180
Hair: blonde
Eyes: blue
Age: 35

The grandson of a viking from the north who settled on an island after the first wave of immigration from the frigid north. His father converted to the native religion after marrying an islander giving birth to Sindri. Many of his men followed suit and his father was granted title of the island. Sindri was taught in the empires capital and does not consider himself a Northman. The Vikings adapted there boats for fishing until approaching ice line forced them like there ancestors into raiding. Sindri unlike his father had more on his mind exploration reuniting the empire.

Exploration only attacking small camps that can be overwhelmed in a single day or night. 20 long ships with 25 men made up of all types of soldier plus 50 men traders merchants and more. Colonizing program: 1,000 people of all classes have been readied to seed 4 colonies/outposts. The group will have traders crafts men and soldiers with a mote and bailey fort. A small port with docks will be made along with a farm and orchid if these are not available. The project began because the fish which remain the primary food source have been moving further south for warmer waters. Trade has been expensive and food is to low to support the population as the growing season shrinks.

Mitsurugi and the Asians

Name: Lord Mitsurugi
Age: 35
Gender: Male
Height: 5’9”
Weight: 200lbs
Hair: Black, shoulder length, usually tied in a bun

Mitsurugi’s family has ruled over the local area for centuries, even before the Empire showed up, and as such, they are the wealthiest family at this time. They live in a manor/castle, built over the centuries, that sits upon a well-protected and easily defendable hill. The only other place in the area that is as well defended is the local Imperial fort.

As a young man, Mitsurugi showed considerable skill with a blade, and was subsequently drafted by the Imperial Army. A few months ago, the Army sent him home due to an injury that would prevent him from continuing his service. Before that injury occurred, Mitsurugi had gained a reputation on the battlefield due to his skill with the blade and his blood red samurai armor.

When Mitsurugi returned, it was to find the local Imperial garrison depleted and the governor considering his options. His home town had faired fairly well and had a decent defense setup (not a chance of repelling a large, coordinated attack, but good enough to keep out the occasional raid, be it an animal or not). Also, when he returned, Mitsurugi found his father ill and dying, so it fell to Mitsurugi to take over leadership.

A few days ago, Mitsurugi received a message from the Imperial governor, requesting that an alliance be formed between them. Apparently, the governor has considered his options and figured that it would be in his best interests to be friends with the locals. Mitsurugi is open to the idea of the alliance, but he has yet to reply.

**********************************
It is tradition among Mitsurugi’s people that slaves only be kept for 7 years before being freed. Due to the difficulty of travel, the freed slaves are unable to return home, and thus they find a place among Mitsurugi’s people.

Kingdom Setup:

2,000 Basic Foot Soldiers (1,000 standard, another 1,000 from freed slaves)

200 Men-At-Arms (not including those guarding the officers) Armed with a single katana and wearing leather armor

150 Officers (Samurai) Each is armed with two swords, another hand weapon, bow, and a dagger, and each officer has two Men-at-Arms acting as body guards.

100 Asian Archers (no armor only peasant clothes, long knives, bows and arrows)

30 Barbarian guides (hide armor, long swords and axes, wood shields)

6,000 Peasant families (5,000 standard, 1,000 from freed slaves)

3,000 Middle class (2,000 standard, 1,000 freed slaves)

5,000 Slaves

Advantages:

Defense: The people know how to defend themselves and their town as if it were second nature. The perimeter defenses consist of a seven foot high wall of stone and wood, topped with punji sticks (a sharp, wooden stick, coated in excrement); more punji sticks are hidden near the base of the wall (about three-feet away) on the outside; the walls have arrow slits placed at regular intervals along the wall, so that arrows may be fired or spears thrust through at attacking enemies. Rice patties extend 200 yards out from the walls, making it easy to spot incoming attackers, and having the benefit of slowing the attackers as well (if the attackers do not want to be slowed by the muddy rice patties, they are then restricted to the roads leading to the gates). Mitsurugi’s home consists of even more elaborate defenses, ranging from punji sticks to a maze-like entrance where attackers can be ambushed from anywhere. The manor/castle can easily accommodate a quarter of the population of the town comfortably; half the population in cramped conditions. Thick wooden gates braced with metal are built into the walls and can be closed and secured in times of need. The perimeter walls have wooden gates that are thinner, but still braced with metal.

Disadvantages:

Close quarters: Because of the setup of the town, buildings are rather close together, and there are many alleyways that people can get lost in. There is little to no room to expand within the defensive perimeter. The streets and alleys are not very clean, but an effort is being made by having slaves go through and clean up what they can, taking the garbage to a dump about a mile south of the town.

Outlying villages: Most peasants live outside the walls in small villages, making it difficult to get them all within the protection of the town walls.

Anything you want me to change/add/fix, let me know.

ruler name: Warchief Conan Rau.
age:22
gender:male
height: 6'6"
weight:290
description: Conan is big. Really big. green eyes, dark red hair, and body that looks as if carved from stone. his arms, chest, back, and face are awash with honour scars and tattoos. He is posessed of a thick red beard, which is carefully braided from the moustache. His hair is tied back by a braid of hair on each side of his head. He almost always wears a thick torc of twisted gold around his neck, culminating in stylized dragon heads.

History: Conan is the son of the former Warchief Artilak Rau, and was taught to fight since he could stand. This statement is literal, for battle and honour are everything to the varied barbarian tribes. He learned to fight equally well with spear, axe, hammer, sword, knife, bow, and his hands. On or off horseback. On open ground and through forests. In what passes for armor among the tribes, and stark naked. it was necessary. His father wanted him to succeed him as Warchief, and warchiefs are chosen through through tournament. Upon the death of his father, he proceeded to win the tournament and was crowned as Warchief.

he lives in a fearsome hall in the fortress of Bharkad (barbaroi for solitude) surrounded by the mightiest warriors of a warrior race.

He leads his warriors personally, and in battle can be seen in a bladed chariot drawn by Razorbacks. His hair and beard fully braided, a longhorned warriors crown on his head, and a masterfully smithed breastplate of hardest steel and gold wire. A longbladed spear in one hand, and a broadsword in the other, knives and an axe on his belt, and on his back, a great two handed double bladed axe and a massive sword.

i want to do a very large realm, to illustrate the many tribes, and the barbarian horde sort of idea. It can be made up for in the realm of the fact of low technology. though their weapons are good. armor is practically non-existent, relegated to hard leather, with maybe a large spiked pauldron even for the Warchiefs own men. they do use metal helmets of good quality, but other then that, its animal products and a wooden shield, with maybe a bit of cured hide stretched over it.

so if you could let me know what works for you Jag, id appreciate it

GHEIST....One or two things.

Sindri Hallstein...Great character idea btw he was educated in the Empire run capital of your island or of the Empire? Second ah the Northmen...and this is a useful piece of knowledge that perhaps only character that have been exposed to Northmen know. They're primative stone age natives...not exactly human and are literally cave men. Perhaps your character's grandfather was Viking but from a different region?

Also I take it you wish to leave home...expand? So you want ships that are capable of sailing long distances? If so have a story tie in of why the Empire let you keep the ships.

1,000 Basic foot soldiers 500 spearmen 250 handlers 250 ax men
500 wives 300 prostitutes.

I really like how you did the break down...but what are handles?

Otherwise I very much liked what I read.

Jedi_Khan

Well your home base is pretty big...I take it your troops will be living with you?

You can add servants...cooks...stable boys and the like, but no additional troops. If you have family besides your father let me know. Another son of the Empire returning home...I like it.

rengadeirishman

Well Irish....you never stop impressing me with what you come up with...very creative. I like your story though depending on your source Vikings had good armor...At least chain mail but often didn't wear it. The historical battle of Stanford Bridge that occurred a few days ago where the Vikings were driven off by the King of England it was said that the Vikings who were doing well in that campaign left behind weapons and armor that would have been helpful. Well excuse the history less all I am saying is your people are capable of armor.

We need to still flesh things out abit but when I can do is fulfill your request. You have a large island than the other player/writers. Take Ireland and double it to give you a rough idea. Rolling grass hills, long stretches of empty plains, and large forests.

That being said I won't give you more tribes...You get many more clans....hundreds of them. The basic family unit which ranges in size from 20 to 200 and there are many men who are without clan affiliations who can bolter their ranks but ususally armies only get big if clans unite. These clans don't automatically see you are rule and after fighting the Empire for years it is doubtful if they will trade one overlord for another. They do come to trade though and work as mercenaries. Most farm, hunt, and live simple lives never far from their homes.

You need to be a diplomat, warrior, and administrator to rule.

the ships are shalow like the longship and dragon ships not deep water but can hug coast and move down rivers. viking ships visited area all over northern europe ireland greenland iceland and even canada. so there not massive ships and if you know how to build them not to hard but if i have to i can get rid of them.

Empire Law

You can keep them...that is not the object of my post. I just want a reason. Like you have imperial permitts...they were built when the empire was busy else where...something like that. I like "dragon boats" and I am a big fan. Your previous ruler liked keeping a tight hold on things is all. Perhaps every ship that went to trade had Imperial Marines on board....you get the idea.

ok how about they were used as merchant ships i mena unlike a galley they have no rams or catapults or balistas so maybe the empire did not see them as a threat.

That is something...I will think on it. And the other stuff I mentioned?

he was educated in the Empire run capital
viking from the north now
so this ships would he like troop ships one trireme could take on like ten also they can only nagivate by stars supplies so only islands like less the 500 miles of water between them.

i know that vikings had armor and it was good. I know my people can make armor, although they arent vikings they are just general barbarians. I kind of picture them as a mixture of celts, goths, vandals, and huns. But while they know how to make armor, but armor is really expensive, and barbarians are not renowned for great wealth. and they're offensive mentality means that they would pick a good longlasting blade over expensive, heavy armour. and their semi-nomadic sort of agricultural hunter lifestyle makes armour far less worth having then a blade. Plus they are incredibly brave, and Conan only wears the armor he wears due to his rank and importance.

and plus, i thought their lack of armour would offset their numerical advantage and great strength.

Its your call jag, im just letting you know my reason.

The samurai are living in the manor/castle with Mitsurugi (the place is more of a complex of attached buildings, than a single place; Mitsurugi's place is by far the biggest, although the whole complex is his, technically). The rest live in the town or out in the villages. Most likely, all the Men-at-Arms are in the town and some basic troops are, while the rest of the troops are live in the villages and serve as a small garrison. About half of the middle class lives in the town as well, while the rest is spread out among the villages to provide services and whatnot. About 80% of the peasants live in the villages, while the other 20% lives on the edges of the town. And then the slaves live with whoever owns them.

Now the town...I've been given it some thought and decided that the town surrounds and encloses a sort of natural harbor on a large river. The river makes up the western border of the town and serves as a natural barrier. Mitsurugi's manor sits on the northern side of the harbor while the Imperial fort sits on the southern side. In between is the town docks. I figure the Imperials will have their own, and Mitsurugi will have his own as well. Of the three docks, the town docks is the most vulnerable spot to attack.

I'll describe the harbor and whatnot in more detail later if you want, unless, of course, you say no to the town setup.

Your reason is pretty good...just didn't want you shut out of anything. Seems perfectly fine. I like that you are making the barbarians that much different then the Vikings. Very cool....So it would be said you people are good sword makers?

Jedi_Khan

Okay that gives me some more data...In Japan castles were more of a complex then a single keep. Some went on for over two miles in length with residence for family, diplomats, members of court, space for troops...gardens places to train. Should be as interesting a your town.

Btw I like your town and I would like more details for the future but I like what I have heard so far. Good break down of wear everyone lives.

GHEIST

Not exactly the Imperial Marines are law on the high seas...but you have probably been forced to transport them and army units more then a few times.

Ah you have been to the impressive and ancient capital. I am sure you have learned much.

This is going great guys...I will be posting structure designs soon. These will help you improve your communities.

Well i figured since there was vikings AND barbarians, that i would go for a more fantasy based barbarian. and yes, weapons they make very well. They have to, their weapon is almost as essential to staying alive as their organs. clan warfare is endemic, their homeland is mostly wilderness with small towns and strongholds scattered around. and lots of even smaller holdings. Its a wild and very dangerous place to live. its a rough life. But they are free. and the roughness of their existence yields powerful and brave warriors. Honour is paramount, because out there all you have is your clan.

anyway, all their weapons, from arrowheads to huge two handed warhammers, a la paladins from warcraft three, are made very well

This is all fantasy based as much as historical so your boys will fit in fine.*S*

I will be putting the building list up soon, but I had a structure called "Fortified Farms" last time and I think most of your clansmen will call them home.

it does sound like them. Ill figure out a setup for the Fortress of Solitude and have it up probably later on today

I look forward to reading it my friend. And I have been talking with a female player/writer so you boys won't be along in your conquests. We will be starting soon.

Fortress of Bharkad

it is the seat of the Rau clan, which has yielded more Warchiefs then any other. and is located in the traditional and ancient lands of the Rau clan, known as the Blademarch, so named for the infamous skill of the Rau warriors. The blademarch consists of an area of mountains and Rau valley in the middle, which holds a forest and peat bog.

Bharkad means "solitude" in the barbaroi tongue, and this "city", which is really just a fortress around which a town has sprung, earns this title. It is located on a mostly flat typically foggy valley., upon which several hills sit. The city itself is located on and around the largest hill, known as Bharkad becuause it alone sits above the fog. the other hills hold watchtowers and small hamlets, interspersed with even smaller communes and farmsteads throughout the blademarch. Behind the fortress lies a peat bog which forms a natural defense to the north of the blademarch. to the east and west of the Rau valley are the Barad reach and the Daggerspire heights respectively. A road leads into the mouth of the valley and branches off to the various hamlets and watchtowers of the Rau valley, and of course to the fortress itself.

The fortress consists of the great hall, a massive two story structure which is where Conan holds court, it also is venue to traveling seanchai, bards, theatre troupes, and combat games. It is also where Conan entertains guests and hosts travelers. Hospitality is second in importance only to Honour among the barbaroi, indeed it is usually seen as a cornerstone of individual and clan honour. Attached to the northern end of the great hall is the Chieftains keep, which is home to his personal thanes and his family. atop the keep is the Bladelight, a massive space filled with kindling, which is lit every night, as are the ones in all the towers of the Blademarch. to provide some light and guidance to those in the foggy valley.

The great hall and keep, along with the necessary outbuildings (i.e. stables, smithy's, workshops, armories etc.) are surrounded by a fifteen foot high wall of stone, 6 feet thick, upon which warriors keep watch over the town. this compound is located on the peak of the hill, and it is this compund that stands above the fog.

beneath the fortress itself, is the town of Bharkad, one of the largest towns on the island, posessed of what passes for amenities among the barbaroi. this is surrounded by four watchtowers and a wall five feet taller then the inner one.

hows that?

Alright we will begin soon. We have one other player that has not posted yet but has pmed me....I replied to some of Mantra's questions but does anyone have anything else to ask about or want before we start. I will send buildings soon.

One other question: are you making a separate IC thread or is the IC going to be here?

Any other questions I come up with, I'll either PM or post in the OC thread.

I wasn't playing to have an IC and OOC this time...we just run with things here of coarse adding IC and OOC when needed...any "secrets" can be pmed to me. That work?

I had some other thoughts and questions, partly conveyed by PM,

So what God or Gods does the Empire serve and worship or is it a more general 'Gawd' of All' kind of thing?

I understand that there is no ocean-going ships available, but what about smaller ships or boats capable of short 'island hops'? If there are none available, then how can any group of islands or cities conduct trade or commerse?

How do the North Men move from island to island if they are primitive and do not have ocean going ships?
