Village Warriors II:War Captain and the Islands of Empire

Tomorrow...well technicially later today. it is late now.

Useful Structures

To give you prespective and ideas for construction.

The Hut

The most basic of structures for slave, peasant, and poor warrior alike. Built from wood with a thatched roof it has a cooking stone with a hole in the roof. It has a wood door which will barely keep out an attacker and the floor is off earth. It holds one family and has a storage bins for food and tools outside.

Peasants and slaves

The Large Hut

Basically three huts grouped together with an actual chimmy for cooking and a store room for tools and food. It has stronger doors that can protect those inside and has a wood floor. Another important feature is a garden that can feed the family that lives there.

Peasants, slaves, soldiers

The Farm House

The large hut doubled in size and much nicer. It has a larger store room and a workshop to make tools and basic weapons. It has a garden and a field for growing crops or a space to graze livestock, and a large shed or a barn. These homes also have a shrine that needs to be tended by a priest, but can be used to create minor religious items. Alternatives include fruit trees, trees for harvesting, or take away the field (can keep the garden) and add a dock and boat house you have a fishing operation. These are good stone and wood structures and they show that your people have prospered. There is also an area to brew spirits.

Peasant and Middle class, officers

The Fortified Farm

The farm house design on steriods. Thicker walls and strong thick double doors. Larger store rooms, and two workshops, one for tools and another for weapons (armor and hand weapons only). The will also have a chapel dedicated primarily to a wargod but there might be shrines inside to other Gods and there is a love level priest. There will be a training area near the fields and targets for missile weapons. There will be a barn and grazing area if they are cavalry troops. There is a brew house which a place to brew spirits and a place to sit and drink and meet.

These are really a cluster of small farms that are walled in and have several families and farm workers (slaves or hired help) band together. The compound is surrounded by a stone or wood wall and has two months of supplies at any even time. While these structures are seldom seen within cities and towns they're highly popular on the the frontier or the coast where people have to defend themselves.

veteran soldiers and officers, middle class

The Manor House

If the fortified farm is geared towards war and defense the manor house is geared to making money. Manor houses have double the fields and gardens a farm house has and grazing space for animals and there are plenty of store rooms to keep large amounts of supplies. There is one large workshop for mass producing tools or weapons and a smaller for household work. There is a large brew house for storing and making of spirits whether it is wine or beer and there is a hall to drink and meet in. There is also a chapel with a full time priest and students and education for the children. The chapel has its own garden and store room.

This land pays for itself like all farms but it turns a profit and your middle class and nobles ususally call them home. It depends on the owner, but their defenses are similar to the fortified farm, but not as extensive.

Religious Buildings

Shrines

A small shrine setup to your God of choice with a place to pray. It helps a priest perform rituals and create special items.

Chapel

About to hold several shrines and an alter it is an indoor place for religious ceremony, meetings, and learning. It needs a full time priest and staff to tend it but it has benefits and priests can be trained there. It is a good place to perform rituals and create items and ususally has several holy items stored there.

Church

The size of three chapels with several priests. It is a place for meetings and worship and has a library, alter, and shrines. The gardens can provide enough for the church and alittle extra. There is also a brew house for wine and beer and a large workshop which is high quality to help produce holy items. The church will have guards and possibly organize local peasant worshippers into a militia if their is a crisis. Other buildings include residents for the staff both laymen and priests, priestess and intiates tombs as well as grave yard, and a school house.

This list is only a start...suggestions? requests? questions about what is here?

To Start you all off just a sample..background to follow

As I said above this is just a start for all of you who are ready. This will allow you to write turn one. The veterans know how so let them lead. Once you have a turn I will respond until there is player contact. Let us begin....

GHEIST ...still in?

sonali00783... repost what we talk about and we can start.

Romulas Timero

Greek pirates gladly transport you and what remains of the 10th to your home city. Since your troops are unwilling to part with their women every ounce of gold is spent to pay the bastards. Still you site Godshead in a few weeks. The city has less polish then you remember it, but the people who reside within its walls are happy to see you as well as your family (you decide who is left).

You don't trust the Greek pirates, but they brought you home without incident. They do know where you live though. The Imperial compound in the city looks like it is in chaos. A blood red banner hangs from the main administration building instead of the black eagle imperial flag and the building looks like it has been crudely fortified. The housing for the troops is burning and many dead bodies can be seen in the square....mostly Imperial civilians. The fort looks battered but secure.

Lord Mitsurugi

You are called to a meeting with the Imperial noble who has been governor for the last ten years. Conmac is a loyal Imperial but sees where things are heading and he asks you to meet him in the church garden in their compound. You have been told his military is will supplied and the priests do have guards as well.

Rumors are abound about scout ships being sited off the coast belonging to another Asian power. Some out lying farms have been plundered by Imperial renegades mostly young nobles and cavalry.

Warchief Conan Rau

Fearing your people the Imperial governor and his household set sail one night and have not been scene since. Imperial troops have abandon the administration building and with their clergy are held up in the fort. There is also news that there is an Imperial fleet searching around to land and find a new home base.

Dar El Ma'a (female character's stars and name?)

If you didn't have enough to worry about in your own household there other outside problems. Word has come to you from a friendly merchant that Mongals from the next island are striking a deal with Greek pirates for transport to your lands. The Imperials are sealed off in their part of the city and are waiting to see which faction controls the palace though there are rumors that claim spies and assassins are in the city and even in the palace.

Oengus the Imperial governor is a priest lord and has a large harem of women from your land. It is most likely he wishes to seal an "alliance" with a marriage. His wife pasted the last summer mysteriously but his mistress and their four children live in his home.

If that wasn't enough the many wives and supporters are arming themselves and securing the loyalty of mercenaries and soldiers.

The bustle of activity in the hallway outside her sleeping chamber woke Melissa from her bed. She yawned hugely and slowly sat up. She found Abdul-Warith, her guardian eunuch already waiting patiently. "Salaam," she greeted him lazily.

She sighed as Abdul-Warith chivvied her out of her comfortable bed to breakfast on dates and coffee. When it she had eaten, she was bathed and perfumed, her hair brushed out.

She dressed and went to the small garden that was effectively neutral ground in the harem. After a few moments, Abdul-Malik, the chief eunuch entered the garden. He came over to sit with her.

Spy

"Malik," she murmured to him. "If I'm to protect myself, I must know what the others are up to. Please keep me informed if my father's wives, or his other children, get up to anything that could put our position here in danger."

Abdul-Malik, the heavyset man who commanded the palace servants and the harem, grunted an affirmative and patted her hand before leaving.

Train

After Abdul-Malik left, Melissa set Abdul-Warith to send a message to Zaim, the captain of the mamelukes who guarded the palace. Unknownest to most of the women in the harem, she and Zaim had known each other as children, before she had ever come to be acknowledged as her father's child.

Melissa donned a soft blue veil that covered her face and rose, padding to a quiet sitting room. Zaim, of course, would not be allowed in the harem and propiety insisted she stay within. The sitting room would be a compromise, chaperoned by her eunuch of course.

When Zaim came, Melissa had tea waiting. They sipped the tea quietly and Melissa leaned over to whisper in his ear. "Zaim, I must have the loyalty of the mamelukes. The others have alliances and noble families, but if I have the army, they will not be quick to move against me."

Zaim nodded. His position as Captain allowed him to heavily influence the mamelukes, and through them the asshuri.

Abdul-Warith came forward with a small chest, setting it down. Melissa smiled at Zaim, resting her hand briefly on his wrist, then withdrawing it when Abdul-Warith frowned. "Take this chest and give these shekels to the mamelukes and the officers of the asshuri. Tell them to inform their men of my generosity and to train hard so they can protect our island from those who threaten it."

Diplomacy

After Zaim had left, Melissa send Abdul-Warith to carry a brief letter of greetings to Lord Oengus, the imperial governor. She invited the governor to call on her.

Build

Lastly, Melissa met with the powerful iman Farraz. The holy man was a wild bearded man with a fierce stare. He began with a heated lecture on morality. Melissa sat through it, nodding demurely when appropriate.

"Revered Teacher," she murmured to him in a soft voice. "I respect your wisdom and wish I could help share it with all our people. Too long have the Imperials false Gods been celebrated here on Dar El Ma'a. I know if my father was healthy, he would wish for you to build a church here in Illafualla to spread the word of the One God. In his sickness, it falls to me, as his dutiful daughter to do the same."

Melissa donated another small chest of coins to the Iman to get started. Hopefully, her gesture of piety would appeal to the religious conservatives of Dar El Ma'a. Their support could make all the difference in the days to come.

The Japanese join in the struggle as well under the leadership of Princess Nakai Yoshimoto.

Age-28 years
Sex-Female
Height- 5’3”
Weight- 56 KGs.
Hair- Black, long
Eyes- Black

Princess Nakai was daughter of Emperor Yun Yoshimasa and was married at a young age of 20 yrs to Emperor Seimei Yoshimoto, and gave birth to 4 prince. But in a young age she lost her husband in a brutal war with a neighboring warlord, a war that stretched for 2 bloody years, with terrible losses to both sides.
But under the leadership of her husbands chief Samurai Minamoto, they were able to snatch the victory from the enemy, and they captured a lot of wealth from the enemys treasury, the population was taken as slaves, and brought back to the city of Haka, but enemy territory was small and taken in Military control.

Nakai was declared the Empress of the state with her eldest son Tuka being declared the crown prince. Nakai was a well educated lady and knew perfectly well to handle the state, in addition she had a loyal group of supporters.

The structure of the city…

Haka was a small fortress city based on an island with nice fertile lands, and good river system, resulting in vast fishing grounds. Also it lied on the central trade path. The city had all the facilities and a good sanitation network, in addition the city had stone walls all around with rice padding fields all around the city wall, and a small tunnel network that opened in a small part in the opposite forest, and could only be accessed from inside the palace gates. The palace was well guarded by a force of Elite Samurais who were given
Offices inside the palace.
In addition the harbour had a big trading centre, large warehouses, merchant taverns, lodging and bars etc.
The taxing policy was friendly for traders making the city an ideal hub for traders.

Millitary

500 Foot Soldiers (all now trained from the rigorous war there breakdown
a- 100 Archers (they can wield some blade as well)
b- 400 Swordsmen (they carry bow and arrows which they shoot before charging on the enemy)
all of above wear very light armour

100 Men at arms
They are a better breed of soldiers as compared to foot soldiers and reffered as the trainee Samurai’s and are very hardy. They have toughned armour, but very light one.
They are archers and good swordsmen.

50 Officers usually known as ‘samurai’s’, extremely hardy and loyal, they are highly dedicated to the kingdom, and have followers of there own, and after the war all officers now have there own horses.

Around 4000 peasant families

1500 middle class

2000 slaves (I have reduced slaves to 50% of small size kingdom and moved 1500 to farmers and 500 to middle class).

Plus the followers of Officers and Man at arms, breaking into field healers, blacksmith, kitchen man and so on…

Sindri returns the loss of his army he finds himself with a great many ships plague and pestilance must be purged from his land. The land the people the animals are dying in increasing numbers. Slaves are taken in increasing numbers from the neighboring tribes and old slaves bonds man granted there freedom. The only hope s tro continue the infusion creat colonies expand or die.

Colonization/Exploration

Half the horses die and are slaughtered for meat to feed the famished crew and colonist keeping the home island secret. Remains of a seasonal fishing village are found along with massed graves. On the beach skeletons are found with long slashing swords and small needle thin daggers. “damn another pirate attack” the Kofu a pirate race that lived on an off the sea a race of pillagers and rapist. Sindri sent out a search party and found smoked fish his men ate something with there tough biscuits and cheese.

Building
A small moat and bailey is built on the largest hill over looking the village which must be destroyed to avoid infection. Logs are dragged from the water and dried these are used to make on a wall around the camp. Lumber is drawn from the hulls of the ship along with field stones to make cabins. A monument is raised to the gods tribute is placed at the feat of the god. No docks are built the lightened ships are dragged onto the beach the forest burned back for defense.

Science
Spear guns and a compass are found the possibilities for both war and exploration endear the leader. Literate elders and members of the merchant class hoshu a yellow skinned slave and literate man is set in charge under supervision. The hope is of navigation not reliant on the stars that need night and clear weather. Hunting on land and in water would be safer and larger game could be taken. The fishing island and home island lack the materials for the compass. It must have been bought or stolen else were and brought to the village.

Diplomacy
Letters are sent to the merchant guild at a neighboring island controlling trade the guild is ruled by an ancient but related family. Blood and money ties have kept sindri‘s and the other house close. Proposals of a blood alliance strengthen ties have now been made by the merchant house. The trade house has large ship but few warriors the mercenaries they rely on have moved south or been pushed. Pirates take more and more ships for slaves and so they have come to sindri for help.

I have decided on an IC thread and have moved your posts there...this will be 4 OOC

*wakes up in the office under a pile of bananas...ah the thread!*

Renegade

I will be giving you some stuff for being first, but do you want to put any more detail into your first turn or shall I reply?

Elayne

:rose:

A great start to the game my dear...gives me plenty work with and you have an interesting house hold.

GHEIST

You have done well for your first post...fairly detailed, but a few questions.

You left your family's lands to settle else where? Where is the merchant's guild...your home island? another viking settlement? A large island or a small one...?

Spear guns?

hoshu a yellow skinned slave...I take it you have a talented Asian slave?

sonali00783

Very well done...I will give you a few facts...a few extras and then you can post your turn m'lady... :rose:

Your father was Emperor of the Island I take it..allowed to rule by the Emporer. I will address that situation and this time you are widow with four children? How old are they generally speaking?

I think you will do well my dear....A possible trade partner with the Arabs.

Has everyone found the facts posted useful?

Okay you left the family....Okay can work with that.

merchant's guild?

Yes I know what spear guns are....How do they exactly fit in an ancient setting is what I want to hear. I don't know one ancient culture who has them...Though just recently I was reading that the gentlemen who was the model for the shark hunter in jaws prefers a thrown harpoon over a spear gun.

A slave is an aristocrat? you mean we was a former aristocrat?

ancient people had ruber they used it to make a gems ball
so they could have made one

second he was in his culture in the viking he is a slave or bonds man

they had Atlatl's which were like a stick with an almost bowl shape at one end, which they used to throw javelins. Mayans and Aztecs used them, but thats as close to a spear gun as it got. To make a spear gun, theyd have to have knowledge of pneumatics, which they wouldnt have. Im pretty sure spear guns werent invented until after regular guns.

and jagged, go ahead and reply, then i will reply as the Warchief doing administrative things.

Well the children could be say eldest 10yrs, 9 yrs, 7yrs, 6 yrs.

Sure i had like a lot of trading partners, a few maybe at war with each other but needing the stuff other produces....

game balls in south america made form rubber they have found them but maybe just a a harpoon them youre rules i obey

Harpoons then I know for a fact Vikings had those....

sonali00783 I will give you some starting date later today so you can post. Work is being a bear. :rose:

Some good first posts people...I believe I said turns will be 2 months time. I will be updating them the first half of this week if not tomorrow. Some interesting characters and plot ideas...

Two months time? Oh. Whoops. I had written my post like I would usually write an RPG post, thinking that you would play the role of the Governor.

You did fine..I will play the role of governor in your case if you want...but perhaps you would like to do alittle more then just the meeting.

Mantra...wrote his own which is good since he followed the plot line and didn't ask for any responses.

Add alittle and I promise to be responding soon.

Oh, no! More Romans! :)

I hope it is not too late to jump on board.

Since you said duplicate nations are allowed, I think I can have a lot of fun with a different kind of Romans. Mantra seems to have chosen the disciplined, warrior side of things, and I will take a province which is more about wealthy decadence, slave exploitation, espionage, intrigue, and abuse of power. Hopefully, we will complement each other nicely.

Sooooo, I bring you the province of:

Syracilia

Race: Roman
Size: Medium
Summary: Prosperous breadbasket territory, producing a very large surplus of food and food-related products (grain, wine, olive oil, etc), which used to be exported all over the Empire. Business over war.

500 Legionaries
100 Centurions
50 Elite Cavalry

1,000 Peasant families
2,000 Craftsmen families
2,000 Middle Class

10,000 Slaves

DISADVANTAGES:
Small army: As Syracilia was considered to be a low-risk province, there was no need for a big garrison until recently. A small force of loyal troops was always there, however, to keep the law and prevent potential slave uprisings.

Slave-heavy population: Due to the way the economy is structured, only a small minority of the population are free men, who work for their own interest and, more importantly, can fight. However, the non-slaves are acutely aware of how hugely outnumbered they are by the slaves; many men have military training and own very good weapons and armor in case they need to protect their family and posessions from a newly-baked Spartacus. Many houses are built with defence in mind.

Expensive tastes: The high class of Syracilia is as wealthy as it is vain and rife with greed and lust. They use their wealth for extravagant forms of entertainment, feasts, orgies, and the like. Thankfully, they are not too numerous, and the natural wealth of the island can support their tastes.

ADVANTAGES:
Breadbasket: The land is exceptionally fertile, supporting three big harvests per year, and work has been organized very well, creating a phenomenally productive industry. Grain, meat, wine, olive oil, and even the much coveted and rare sugar flow out from this land as if it was the Horn of Plenty from fairy tales.

Tight internal control: A single family owns and controls almost the entire island. Agricultural production is organized in Latifundia, a series of massive plantations, all of which are owned by the governor or his relatives. Major manufacturing and processing industries in the town are also owned by members of the family. The garrison commander is the governor's brother, as is the head of the espionage organization. Said spy organization has its hands in everybody's business inside as well as outside the island, and is a very powerful tool. In all, the government structure resembles a family-owned corporation more than a province or kingdom.

Merchant ships and limited shipyard available: With so much goods being shipped from Syracilia, it made sense to base some merchant ships on the island and create facilities to repare them, which the Empire allowed to do as a matter of exception. So, Syracilia posesses a fleet, enabling it to export its products and bring back imports. Although these are merchant ships, less agile and not optimized for battle, they are built to be able to defend themselves and have a good fighting chance in battle.

Aleus Scipio
Male, 25

Quite young for governorship, he was nonetheless appointed by his retiring father. Business is always in need of the best fit manager, and the Scipii have long ago abandoned the rule of passing everything to the eldest son. It was always the most capable one who got the position, as chosen by a retiring ruler. And young Aleus was very talented despite his years.

His brother, Marius, was a much older and more experienced man, most of whose 35-year life so far was spent on campaigns, fighting the Empire's wars in many corners of the world. He has finally transferred home when troubled times started, and now commands the army of Syracilia. It is his job to ensure the island is well-protected.

Another brother, Marcus, has always been a quiet and secretive fellow. He rarely spoke, but always listened, and had a knack for knowing everything about others while they knew little about him. This man went on to rise through the ranks of the secret police, and now at 30 years old, Marcus headed the organization, doing a fabulous job.

Their sister Julia was a lady of rare beauty and charm. She could convince you the sky was not blue, if she so wished, and you would bow and kiss her feet, thanking her for opening your eyes to this fact. She was a priestess of Mercury, the Roman god of commerce, which was the patron diety of the island.

There were numerous other relatives in various positions throughout the island. In fact, if a position held power and authority, it was almost certain that the person holding it was related to the Scipii somehow.

Hey, um, Wolk? You might want to check some of your names. Example: you talked about Marcus rising through the ranks of the secret police, and "now at 30 years old, Julius headed the organization, doing a fabulous job."

I think you can see what I mean.

Oh, and pending Jag's approval, welcome to the thread.
