I do try. Most days, I succeed in not annoying myself. Those are victories.


We can drag them kicking and screaming into schools, universities, libraries and book stores, but we can't make them think.

On the one hand I sort of agree.

On the other; there are rules we must follow. We can do whatever we wish, in private. But, when in public we must follow those rules I just mentioned. One of which is that we have to wear clothes which fit the scene.

The chess tournament has a dress code which attempts to make what is, arguably, the most boring of contests, classy. If someone wishes to participate, then they must obey the rules and be classy in both manner and dress. Failure to do so means they don't get to play with the rest of the class.

It is akin to contracts which the NFL/NBA/whatever letter combination sports orgs you want have with players regarding bad conduct, including off the field. Again, if you want to play, you must obey the rules.

Lawyers must wear "mourning clothes" to court. People have to "dress" for church (and dinner sometimes.) and so on. You either do it, or get snubbed/ousted.

In this case, Carlsen got the org to loosen the dress code but there's a catch. It has to be "elegant." Which is undefined and subject to interpretation. Which is often abused by those in power against certain persons. A situation many orgs have faced and have retreated from after reconsideration once the misuses and abuses begin. We shall see if Chess is one of those in that group.

Well, if it's in the rules somewhere, and if you agree to abide by said rules when you ask to be allowed to participate, and then you don't and are asked to comply or leave, then you're a Little Bitch. I think that a newish decent pair of jeans is acceptable by my rules for things. Mostly. They also make jeans that look more like khakis these days.


One wears mourning clothes to court because one is "invited" to a fraternity party, and one had best have a "brother" to attend with.


Wat wore a suit (a damned nice suit, I'll have you know) to a funeral several years ago. They only other person in a suit that day was the corpse. I was shocked at how dressed down the crowd was. It stuck me as a tad disrespectful.

I agree, baffling it is. Makes my head hurt a bit. It is still true today that cities will crumble to ruin without the farms to feed them. Half the folks here think that food comes from grocery stores.
