What Are You Listening to Now 7.0

Avenged Sevenfold - Hail To The King

Not a fan of the band, but I gotta admit that's a pretty decent riff they got there. One part AC/DC, one part "Black Album" era Metallica.

Iluvatar : Children

Excellent, light but extremely pleasant neo prog.

Back in the day, these guys opened for Marillion.

Three of the band members are friends.

Kirk Hammett : Portals

Playing this again.

This EP is in danger of being my "best-of-2022" selection.

Edenbridge : Aphelion

Specially for @Blind_Justice, who is in love with Edenbridge's latest output.

I'm kidding - I'm KIDDING :D
I have no beef with Edenbridge at the moment, apart from thinking they are just another in the sea of female-fronted Symphonic Metal outfits. No, the band I found horrible to listen to recently was Xandria. They are not just another contender in the much too crowded Symphonic pool, but they do sound cheap and way too overambitious for their own good.

I know, that might be a bit hypocritical coming from a music making noob like myself who's making music on a shoestring budget, but at least Dani and I have audibly improved since our first EP - and Xandria did the opposite. Their new stuff sounds worse than, for example "Neverworld's End" which had both a better vocalist and better mix. You could clearly differentiate between orchestral and metal threads in the sound, something which isn't possible on the new record unless one part is absent so the other stands alone. And I tend to hope that a long time doing something results in improvement, not regression. Sure, there are exceptions like Lars Ulrich and Anders Fridén, the singer of In Flames, who only seem to get worse and more unlistenable the older they get, but they are outliers.

I was bitching so much, I forgot to mention my current aural drug of choice:

Ann Wilson - Fierce Bliss

Yup, a good time for the older generation. This neatly slots into the same line that Kansas, Blue Öyster Cult and Journey are hogging right now. Which reminds me, I need to give the new Journey another couple spins too until the The Halo Effect album comes out in early August. Damn, it's been AGES since I've been hyped for new music like that. In Flames without Anders Fridén? FUCK YEAH, more please!

I remember your comments about Edenbridge (and several others) who've become pretty generic. Hence my teasing you about this one :D

And I agreed that so many of the bands that I liked in the beginning have fallen into the trap of excellent performances and sound engineering and so on - but they've lost the edge that made them special in their early days. It seemed that in their quest for perfection, they forgot to be edgy or adventurous or quirky or creative or - just fun.

The reason I spun Edenbridge - and Magenta and Illuvatar and Beardfish several of the others I posted recently:

A friend has recently shown an interest in various forms of prog, prog metal, power metal, and neo. So I've been selecting fairly generic examples of each sub-genre, to see what catches with him - after which I'll guide him deeper into whatever he likes best, and away from stuff he doesn't ... and then he can launch his own searches for the music he wants to get into.

So I gave him an a few Edenbridge and Nightwish and other female-fronted symphonic metal albums - some from their early catalogs, and some from their more recent.

And ... before I tossed them over to him, I spun a few of them myself just for grins :)

Christian Nodal

His breakout hit. With some 1.2 BILLION views since 2017:

And his new song, 5 million in 10 days:

He's very unusual in his genre for the face tattoos, which seem themed around artistic symbols and indigenous designs. But 'face tattoos' are not 'socially acceptable', especially in his genre of music.

This music genre is called 'Música regional mexicana' - and it sort of plays the same role in Latin America as Country Music plays in the English Language world - similar themes about broken hearts, country living, and riding around on horses with cowboy hats (which actually come from Mexico). ;)
