Porcupine Tree : The Incident - Discs 1 & 2

I might be the only person in he known universe who thinks this is the best Porcupine Tree album.

Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime

... and it went downhill from there. Empire had more solid songs than stinkers, but Promised Land and after were... not so good any more. I should probably check out the albums with the new singer, but I have a sneaking suspicion they're just chasing past glory.

Sometimes it's better to forget bands put out material after a certain point. Like WASP after "Still Not Black Enough".

Completely agree!

And Mindcrime 2 was just that - a crime.

Sequels to seminalrecords are a tricky thing. I believe the only decent "part ii" album is Helloween's "Keeper of the Seven Keys II". And then they had to releasexa part 3 which sucked, unsurprisingly.

Songs from a Hard Shoulder

The Tangent

New release from Friday. Typical The Tangent in that it is very jazzy, has many interesting constant time signature changes and has Tilson's talk/sing style which is okay but not my favorite.
What is different with this is of the five songs one is just under five minutes while the rest are all over sixteen minutes each giving the band a lot of room to experiment and do they ever.
if you like The Tangent or jazz with many quirks done by very talented musicians then this is a great release.

The Tangent update:
Well this is a huge surprise. For the final track The Tangent covers one of my all time favorite songs: U.K.'s In The Dead of Night. They do a decent job especially with the Allan Holdsworth guitar part. I'm amazed how well Tilson sang Wetton's part.

U.K.'s eponymous first album - the only studio album with John Wetton, Eddie Jobson, Allan Holdsworth and Bill Bruford.

Such a killer album from start to finish.

Cool. I had lunch with Andy Tillison at ROSfest about a decade ago, then interviewed him twice after that. Haven't heard the new album yet, though.

Spock's Beard : Brief Nocturnes And Dreamless Sleep

Best of their post-Morse releases, IMHO

Sylvan : Posthumous Silence

One of the best German neo outfits.
The premise of this concept album is ... moving:
A father gets to know his daughter better by reading her journal for the first time ... after she has committed suicide

They Dream Of Starfish - Sonic Journey

Is this like the porn star jacking off to his own movie? I like the music Dani and I made and despite having heard these tracks a couple dozen times in varying states of completion, I am not sick of them yet.

Also, "Sonic Journey" does make our EP sound truly amateur hour. We had some cool ideas, but neither the skills, gear or experience to make them sound better. :)

The Flower Kings : Unfold The Future - Discs 1 & 2

No, I'm not a huge Flower Kings fan - but they do have some good moments.
