"Biochemically no different than eating large amounts of chocolate."

John Milton; Devil's Advocate.

I also want to reject the premise that the only reason to be against love is some cowardly fear of the risk. It is not a question of risk its a question of whether one controls their emotions or allows their seratonin levels to dictate the course of their lives. Maybe you are in love with the person you just met at the bar or maybe you are just regenerating a considerable amount of liver damage (which induces massive seratonin production) Too many people (by which I mean a very genetically specific 51% of the population) associate the trappings of the sensual and erotic with romance and become unreasonably distressed when they learn that there was nothing behind the displays but the pursuit of mutual carnal pleasure.

See, I was with you on a lot of that until you became gender specific...

Could just be my frame of reference; experience is perspective. I see no reason why the fact that I have seen women use every guile and wile at their disposal to insure their own emotional (economic, physical, etc) security, should put you off exposing the ways men you have known have used 'territorial natures' to hide their scared needy bullshit. Take the opportunity to enlight a straight man who has no experience with these things. I do not deny that men do it, I have seen my friends do it and paifully looked back on periods of my own life when my endocrine system had more control than my rational mind, but I have never met a woman that wasn't angling for that mythical 'one true...' If you have another perspective feel free to share it; I believe adults refer to that as 'healthy debate' we can have that sort of thing on the playground, right, or should we just resort to throwing sandballs at each other?

Is Love worth the risk?

Depends on what you're risking.

I've seen people who lost love over petty things and people who are still in love with almost nothing in common.

I've seen Vanillas still in love with their freaky so's.

I've seen people deny their parents for love.

Yet I've seen people forsake their spouses and children for "love" .

I know people who love more than one person and some who have no idea what love is.

The real question is can you afford to lose. If you can...it isn't real love.
Love requires a commitment of sorts.
Love isn't just the lust for someone....it's the feeling in your heart that someone completes you. The feeling that you can't live without someone.
Love requires the target of your affection to admonish what you feel and reciprocate.

Love costs you. Thus the risk involved.

Love hurts. Love causes you to feel pain when the person you love goes through crap and out of their feelings for you they push you away trying to deny you the pain they feel.
You still hurt.

Love doesn't lie. Love doesn't sneak around on someone to experience the lust of someone else. Love is honest. Love tells everything to the target of their desires even if in doing so the target goes away.

Is love worth the risk?

Love is the final intake of air as he or she holds your hand prior to your departure.
Love is the first realization that the kids are gone and there's nothing stopping you from spending all your time together.
Love is reading a text or an IM from an Ex who's had their heart torn asunder and the desire to hug her tightly so that she has some support even though she may not deserve it.
Love is smiling when the same ex gets married a year later to a man who doesn't deserve her the way that she for good or for worse.

Is love worth it? The question should read Can love not seem worth it since without love...we cannot exist.

Love gives us music...art...drama...smiles.
Love also gives us torn hearts...depression...anxiety....

Through it all...the answer is yes for without love...***** as we know it isn't as chock full of the experiences we treasure and construct our lives on.

Disappointingly for you I imagine, my other perspective wasn't actually about sharing bitter reminiscence about men who have used their "territorial natures" to hide their scary needy bullshit...although both me and friends of mine have experienced exactly that...even in places where people supposedly contact each other to arrange NSA sexual encounters... it was more that you appear to tar all women with the same brush...clearly, you're either such an amaxing catch that every woman you ever meet becomes an emotional leech who sees you only as the solution to their economic or physical insecurities, or you are seriously moving in the wrong circles...

Love is the intentional delaying or denial of ones own gratification for the emotional or spiritual benefit of another person.

Pre-Valentine's Day post to fuel thoughts for the thread...

The next time I have the urge to speak negatively or rudely to you, I’ll swall and be silent. Loving you doesn’t give me the license for rudeness.

If I can’t be generous and supportive, I’ll least try not to stand in your way. Loving you means wanting you to grow.

I won’t put my problems onto you. You have enough problems, I’m certain and you don’t need mine. My love should simplify your life, not complicate it.

I don’t always have to be right. I can accept the fact that you are right as often as I am. Loving is sharing with each other. If I already know I’m right, I’ll never profit from your insight.

I don’t always have to be running the show. Loving is an ebb and flow. Sometimes I’ll need to give in. At other times I’ll need to take control.

I don’t have to be perfect, nor do you. Love is a celebration for our humanness, not our perfection.

I can give up wanting to change you. If I want you in my life, the best thing for both of us is for me to accept you as you are. After all, love is moving forward together in mutual growth.

I don’t need to place blame. Since I’m an adult who makes decisions based upon personal experience, there is no one to blame for a poor decision except myself. Love puts the responsibility where it belongs.

I can give up expectations. To wish is one thing, to expect is another. One brings hope, the other can bring pain. Love is free of expectations.

To love is the greatest of human experiences and sooner or later we realize that without it life is empty and meaningless. Love is always worth the effort, even if it brings confusion, uncertainty and pain in the process. A loving relationship should be a celebration all of its own. Let’s use this special day as a reminder of that, and then continue celebrating throughout the year.

The Oldest Valentine...

 This poem is said to be the first Valentine written in any language. The spelling has been modernized. The translation is based on Charles d’Orleans’ own version

I am already sick of love,
My very gentle Valentine,
Since for me you were born too soon,
And I for you was born too late.
God forgives he who has estranged
Me from you for the whole year.
I am already.
My very gentle.
Well might I have suspected,
Having such a destiny, cousin
Thus would have happened this day,
How much that Love would have commanded.
I am already.

you would do anything for them
putting them before all others
taking care of their heart
knowing when to give her space
knowing when to hold her close
handsfree6969 said it well
he has applied his thoughts
in making someone i know very happy
if you are lucky enough to ever find the
one you do everything you can to be with
them you may never get that chance again
and time flies

Love is like a cylinder of compressed air,
The only way you know how much you have
lost is when something breaks the seal and its gone.

An elderly couple went to see a marriage counselor after 50 years of marriage. The counselor was astonished that after 50 years, the couple was on the brink of divorce. He asked the couple "What is it about your marriage that brings you here?" The wife replied "For 50 years he's disrespected me and treated me like a second-class person. I can't take any more and I want out." The marriage counselor asked her to provide an example of the husband's behavior. The wife replied "Well, it may seem trivial, but for the entirety of our 50 year marriage, whenever he makes me toast or a sandwich, he gives me the heels of the bread loaf - he NEVER gives me the middle slices. He's greedy and keeps those for himself." The marriage counselor turned to the old man and asked "Is this true?" The old man replied, through tears, "Yes, it's true. I give her the heels of the bread because they have always been my favorite part of the loaf."

It's unfortunate Mick, but in MANY instances, that is indeed the case.

Simply put, love is letting her have the last rice krispie treat.

Lol true but I also think the words stupid and love are inter-changeable

IHC ~ you always have a unique perspective. You too, are right. Love and stupidity are interchangeable, as we do stupid things when we are "in love". Think illogically, and make decisions, that otherwise might make decisions, that we wouldn't. WELL SAID!

:rose: It's communicating the message that too often gets lost in translation.

This is positively lovely, Azul.

:rose: ^^^ this made me cry, one of those soft smiling cries but still, wow

not nearly as well said, but I found this online and thought it would fit in nicely here.

What is love?
Those who don't like it call it responsibility.
Those who play with it call it a game.
Those who don't have it call it a dream.
Those who understand it call it destiny.
And me, I call it you.

when it physically hurts to think about her

she lights up a room the smell of her hair the way she looks down when she is embarrassed the way she bites her lip when shes thinking too hard her brunette locks messy and wind blow the bronze glow of her skin

she makes me take deep breaths
