Love is worth the risk?

I think I FINALLY figured it out...

For The First Time -John Legend

So Many things define love, as there are so many kinds of love...

Just One way for me...to describe love...

To feel you are the ONLY one in another's heart in that magical way---being loved, cherished and accepted unconditionally "as is"...warts and all, flaws and all...and to never have to question your place in that heart...ever...

Love

An everlasting emotion that we feel in moments of great joy.

An exercise in life, to know what is important to the heart and not the mind.

A gift of your heart given freely to another.

A promise of uniting two souls together.

Love and sex are two different things, yet they are equated as the same, causing the confusion of what love truly is. Love has the power to heal and make a person whole. It can bring the greatest happiness by giving, not getting.

It's hard to add anything to what's already been said about what love is and it's worth. Some very eloquent comments thus far. I'd like to add if I may, my thoughts.

I feel that sometimes we hold high expectations of what we perceive love to be. Love will and can knock you on your ass and throws us many curve balls. It's part of life and how we grow and learn to love unconditionally. It's allowing us and those we love to change with that growth, it isn't easily defined nor can it be set into the perimeters of any definition.

Love is individualism as well as it is working with another. I think we are all in agreement that one can not truly love without loving one's self first. Love is what we make of it. It's wanting to be a better person for someone other than yourself. Love is no less than awesome.

With all the post of "What Love Is," the question that naturally follows is "How do I know?"

Its the way her voice changes when she talks to me

Its the way she looks at me

It is the way our eyes connect and lock in our most passionate moments

It is being in a room full of people and knowing, as far as she is concerned, you are the only one there

Its the smile on her face that greets me as I wake up realizing she has been watching me sleep

It is the conversations about anything and everything

It is her need to know my deepest, darkest feelings and thoughts

It is her need to share her deepest and darkest feelings and thoughts with me

It is discussing things that should be "uncomfortable" but aren't and coming away feeling connected even deeper than before

It is the time she is willing to spend with me

It is knowing "we" are the priority.......the essence of our beings..............

Love can be seen from many perspectives.
When it's good it's very good. When it's bad? Well..

Love hurts, love scars
Love wounds, and mars
Any heart, not tough
Or strong enough

To take a lot of pain
Take a lot of pain
Love is like a cloud
Holds a lot of rain

Love hurts
Love hurts

I'm young, I know
But even so
I know a thing or two
I learned, from you

I really learned a lot
Really learned a lot
Love is like a flame
It burns you when it's hot

Love hurts
Love hurts

Some fools think of happiness
Blissfulness, togetherness
Some fools fool themselves I guess
They're not foolin' me

I know it isn't true
I know it isn't true
Love is just a lie
Made to make you cry

Love hurts

Love for me is wanting, willing and giving it to another without any other reason than you want to. Are there varying decrees, absolutely. Do you want it in return, of course, but it's not why you give it.

For me love is...

Selflessly putting someone else's happiness before your own even if their happiness means sacraficing your own.

Actually it depends on what type of love you are talking about. I loved my children before I even knew them, and even when they make choices I don't agree with I will still love them. Unconditional love, now, not ever parent/child relationship has that and that is very sad.

Another kind of love is the love of your family(besides children). Your parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins... You love them and would help them out in any way you could if they needed it.

Which brings us to the love of your friends. The ones who stand beside you and bring the baseball bat if needed. The ones you lean on when you are weak and become strong when they need you. The ones who know your secrets but wouldn't give them up to anyone because you also know their secrets! ;)

Love of a partner.... Hmmm, this one is much more complicated because it can take time to develop, it can happen immediately, it can last forever or it can fade away. Each person is different and it depends on the partner they are with on what that love is. Sure, over the years we tweak our ideas and we learn what we do and don't want, but I don't think we ever truly know what love is until we find that one person who will be there, becomes our best friend, helps us with our family, and would protect our children without hesitation! Is it worth it to keep looking until you find it? Damn straight it is!!! Sure, we may get hurt looking, but we get up, brush ourselves off, vent to our family and friends and then continue looking once more!

Maybe -

I say maybe because it depends on the person and who you're with. It depends on what love is to you as well.

I for one don't feel love in the same way I used to. I'm sure many other people feel the same way.

Sometimes love just isn't worth the pain involved somteims its not sowrht the risk. Other times its worth time and time again.

I've had good experiences and bad ones.

I'm with someone now that I question every day if I actually love her of if I'm just with her out of habit, or if I'm just with her because I think its the right thing to do.

I've been told love is many things.

I've been told its something you work for and work at.

I've been told it's something you feel in your heart. Honestly, to me I've never really truly felt it in my heart.

Sure I've felt the loss of someone and not having them anymore, it hurts its sucks and it burns. But to me its more like a loss of a treasured possession an object. Something to be fondly remembered but still replaceable.

I don't know... maybe I'm just weird.

Even if you are weird, which you aren't... the right weird hasn't come along for YOU yet. But when she does... YOU will know!

In my mind, love is simply the strongest positive attraction you can feel for anything. Setting definitions and limitations on it only damages its capabilities in my opinion. It doesn't have to be permanent, not even long-term. It doesn't have to be for something admirable, nor something personal.

I can love a woman like I love a hot shower. I can love my mother like I love asparagus or the smell of ancient ruins. Restricting how I define it might help anyone's objective understanding of it. But it compromises the power and versatility of the word in my opinion. Love is subjective and abstract. And half of its appeal is trying to figure out what it really means to myself and others.

People always say that "You will know" but how does one know?

Is it a feeling, a thought an emotion? How are emotions formed? How do we name them? There are entire books on them in the psychology field and yet we are still no closer to knowing exactly what makes the human brain tick or how the relationship works between the hormones our bodies release and the mental state we are in.

In fact its entirely possible that based on chemical reactions we have emotions can be faked - See a bunch of articles regarding women emotion and sex and attachment issues.

See articles about men - sex and emotional changes

I just meh.

Don't yuck my YUM! :D I PROMISE, you will just "know"... it's not a grocery list, it's something you will feel DEEP inside of you. It's something you will just "know". It's SO much more than a chemical reaction. It's not hormones... and just for the record, I NEVER fake ANYTHING : )<

My curious nature and the purpose of this thread...I might disagree NS that it's half the appeal, it's far greater than that for me. I do appreciate your sharing...

... And half of its appeal is trying to figure out what it really means to myself and others.
