What made you smile or laugh today? Part IV

All math is evil.

This did.

True story; About fifteen years or so ago, I was teaching a thirty-week class that covered small electronics repair and computer repair. And, well... there was math involved. My students were... shall we say, less mathematically inclined?

Now, I've never been a big believer in labelling every-fucking-little-thing. So, I just went at it from the perspective "this is what you need to figure out in order to make it work."

The director of the college I was working at stopped by one day to check on things. And trying to be encouraging, made a comment to one of my students involving the abbreviation "Trig."

Imagine, if you can, a semi-professional football lineman that hadn't made the cut to get a check for it... Bret looked up at Mr. Otto and said, "Pfft. Mr. Otto, I can't do Trig." After being assured that he was, indeed, doing Trigonometry, he looked back and forth from the director to me several times and than asked me, "you're teaching us Trig?! But... but... but, I can't do math!"

At which point, I corrected them both that actually the formula he was working would not have been covered in a Trigonometry class, but left for Calc I.

I thought we were gonna have to do CPR on Big Bret. 🤣

So pretty!

Here I’m still basically knee deep in snow. Tomorrow’s going to be unseasonably warm, but I’m not sure it’ll make that big a dent on these massive, icy heaps of snow. Ah, spring, come already! ❤️
Ugh, I’m sorry.

That is one though bee though. It’s still below freezing at night.

Made the rookie mistake of sending out my "hey everybody I'm leaving" email at lunchtime and spent the rest of the afternoon wading through a ton of lovely messages from co-workers. Got a little bit weepy.
❤️

You’re awesome so no wonder people appreciate you and are sad to see you go. It’s nice to see it put in concrete words sometimes too, isn’t it? :)

Don’t forget to save them in your ego boost file for a day when you really need to hear those things.

It is! I am sad to leave them too, it's been a great place to work. But sometimes change is important.

I have been doing that! Need to export them from my work email before my last day.

I saved some of the loveliest messages I got, too, and I’ve already gotten good use out of some of them.

Change is important, but man, it’s so hard at times. I hope you find a great community where you go next, too!

I didn’t get lucky in that regard, but the people from the old place have been great towards me and are cheering me on and still including me in many non work related things.

I’ve known that 85th anniversary is a moonstone anniversary and I’ve always been so proud about it, because no one ever knows it. (It’s also the only anniversary I know, but that’s beside the point.)

The thing is, in Finnish the same word refers to both moonstone (gem) and moon rock (rock from the moon). Until now I’ve always thought it’s “moon rock” anniversary rather than “moonstone”. I didn’t even know moonstone, the gem, exists.

I choose to laugh about this, but in reality I’m very disappointed.

I love your language so much 🥰

An old friend I met on Lit reached out and said hello. We have spoken in awhile. It has been nice to catch up.
