I emailed her back. Luckily I caught her in time. She has just replied to say I can have them. Then I need to look into getting them transferred onto DVD (they are old, pre-video film - my dad referred to it as "cine film" - from the 1960s and 1970s). Hope that will be possible.

There are specialized shops that can do it, from old Super-8, 16 mm or video tapes to DVD.

Ask in a videoclub, maybe they can direct you to the right place.

I lived in a centrally heated apartment a few years ago and I had the same problem. We ended up putting little bowls of water around the house to counteract the effects (nice when you add some lavender or pine oil to the water as well). When it got really bad, I used to run the shower for a while with the door open to let steam into the rest of the apartment - which usually triggered the smoke alarms, but that's another story. Having grown up in houses that were heated only by wood-stove, I dislike central-heating a lot. At least with a wood-stove you can keep a kettle of water on top to humidify the environment.

My dad died a few months ago. Today I got an email from my mum to say she's taking all the home movies from my childhood to the municipal dump.

I knew she was a cold parent. I knew my feelings had never mattered much to her. But for fuck's sake - that's my childhood. That's footage of me with my dad. For fuck's sake.

This just underlines the fact that with my dad dead, there is now not one human on the face of the planet who loves me.

every day this week its been after bloody 3 or 4 in the morning until I have felt relaxed enough or rather exhausted enough to drop off and its taking its toll.

I was at Walmart, asked to make a donation to Haiti, sure why not? But now, days later, I realized I'm being an idiot. There are no Walmarts in Haiti, what was a protectionist country trying to preserve their own culture which rejected Ameriaization. My mizerable five bucks, (all I could afford,) is paying for a Walmart sticker on a blanket going to Haiti. All they want to do is build a store on the island country on property they can own. It's all business. It's hateful.
