WHAT year is this again?

You're absolutely right, and I've been to Galveston about a dozen times as well. Nobody got harmed, but the optics were terrible. And in the Age of Trump, it's "Optics Uber Alles".

The Hilton has a fantastic swim-up bar.

Spent most of my time in Galveston at the San Luis on the company dime. Nice enough, but probably due for some reno at this point. I think that the officers acted appropriately under the circumstances. I doubt it would have made the news if it had been black officers with a tethered white guy. The perp was not offended. That should count for something.

the fact is, one of the mounted officers could have taken control of the other horse whilst the other walked with the man. and photos do not bear out your suggestion that the rope is held between officers and through the perpetrator's arms:
[edit: oops, screen stretchers]
instead, the link to the page where you can access all the images proving the man was being led by one officer only, not at all in the manner you describe:
https://www.google.com/search?q=pho...Y6wKHbz2ANsQ_AUIESgB&biw=1920&bih=969#imgrc=_

and, yes, having lived around horses i realise that handcuffing to a stirrup could potentially be dangerous - my point was an extreme one to illustrate how even that would have provided better optics. of course, optics shouldn't be the first consideration, the safety of all people involved as the officers execute their job is paramount.

In all fairness, the original vid I saw wasn't all that clear as to whether it was both officers or just the one. So in this case it was the one officer with a loosely held rope attached to the man's cuffs. Was he being drug along? Did he look at anytime like he was in any distress? (Other than being in cuffs). Further, because this needs to be asked, would anyone have given a rats ass if the "gentleman" in custody were not black?

Recreational outrage.

Everyday thousands and thousands wake up and take to Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, or whatever their media drug of choice is and look for something to be angry about.

Butters. Go back to the first post on this thread. Click on the suggested article then look at the top right of that and click on article number 1. That will give you an acquaintance with the facts your comments sorely lack. :D

You two might want to acquaint yourselves with some pertinent facts about American history.

Quote:
Galveston’s police chief and city manager said they believed the officers used poor judgment in the situation portrayed in the photograph.

“Although this is a best practice in certain scenarios, I don’t think it was the best practice at this point in time,” Police Chief Vernon Hale said.

A police unit the officers had called to transport the first man arrested was not available to pick up Neely, so the officers chose to walk Neely to the intersection of 21st and Market streets, where the mounted units were staging, according to the police department.

The officers appeared to use proper techniques in leading Neely while on horseback, but the practice is usually reserved for extracting people from large, dense crowds, Hale said.

“It is a valid training technique for transporting prisoners in the proper scenarios,” Hale said. “In my opinion, quite frankly, I think my guys showed some poor judgment in this scenario. It wasn’t a crowd-control scenario or anything like that. They should have waited on a unit.”

Neely, 43, has a history of arrests dating back to 1994, including six other criminal trespassi

Piss weak diversion Rob. Trump's a cunt; that's a given, but you made an unjustified attack on the Cops and ishtat pinned you for it. Just own it and move on.

pfft. I didn't even see Ishtat's pist until you pointed it out to me, had him/her on ignore.

You're more than welcome to feel like I made an "unjustified attack", that's your opinion. I think older guys like you and Ishtat were probably raised in the environment where you were taught "the policeman is your friend" and Adam-12 and "to protect and to serve" and all that golden age schmaltz.

Times have changed.

The post-9/11 cop fancies himself as some paramilitary tough guy. "To Protect And to Serve" has morphed into "To protect ourselves, our department's badass reputation and to serve the public when convenient". We see story after story of bad cops and guys like you insist "one bad apple! one bad apple!"

I hold cops to a higher standard of conduct. Yeah, they put their "lives on the line" like they like to remind us at every opportunity...but that's what they signed up for (to quote Trump). If they can't hack it, maybe they should go into, say, logging. It's even more dangerous than police work, but they don't get as fancy funerals.

Did you see that video of the Royal Oaks cop rousting the black guy for staring at a white woman? Let that sink in. Staring. At. A. White. Woman. You're old enough to remember Emmett Till, right? (The black guy was staring at the white woman in her parked car in a parking lot because he wanted to direct his wife to the parking spot if she moved because the lot was packed. The cop forced the Negro to explain himself to the white woman.

We've still got a long ways to go in America, and to me, it seems cops are getting wprse not better. And police apologists such as yourself aren't helping things.
