Wildrose and NightMoves... glad to see someone else enjoys the parades and visiting graves.... I was beginning to think that I was all alone here! ;)

One thing I love about the parade is the watching the little children standing, flags in hand, awestruck as the uniformed Veterans march by. You can see the happiness in the smiles of the Veterans when they see that magic in the little ones eyes.

The other thing I love is that they fire up the Vietnam era tank that sits on the lawn at the Armory - and drive down our "main street" in the parade. Quite a study in contrast as the huge metal machine slowly moves through our Victorian era town.

And then, of course, the marching bands... I'll take some J.P. Sousa "live" any day!

The afternoon BBQ is the icing on the cake! :p

heehee Sue see ya in 4 days! :D

let's see........two for you and two for me.......French guys
that is! :p

Arden, etc.

You guys should be in my town when our Memorial Day
parade happens........its big, every year, rain or shine.....

What is really special is that those are driving the old
classic cars, the vets from WWI and WWII are sitting
in them and waving to the crowds.........it is really special
to see surviving vets of esp. WWI..........my great grand-
father (whom I never met) on my mom's side fought
in WWI and I've wondered if he was in any of the
parades way back in the day..........

Anyhow, after the parade (which is a little over 2 hours),
there is a ceremony on the town hall green.

I won't be here in town this year for it because I'll be
away.........but its always a treat for everyone who goes!

Yep. The Pequot Museum (at Foxwoods) is having a swamp walk on the reservation and my wife and I are going. Big sis is planning to visit with her little one as well.:) :)

I have soooooooooo much yard work and other chores, I could do it 40 hours a week and still take all summer, therefore no BBQ just work.:( :(

BTW, I love Maine. Both parents are from Maine. Have lots of fun.

Im a Loser

I have no plans, so ill probally end up sitting at home waiting for somthing to happen:(

This years parade

Our parades are sometimes short, and sometimes they are good 2 hr affairs. Our local Army National Guard unit normally is in it, but last year they were in Afghanistan, so they were not in it. I am hoping they will be in it this year. We also have a local police dept bagpipe band in the parade which is excellent, and then there is a traditional Civil War fife and drum band, which is normally the smallest band in the parade, but they are THE loudest in the parade. You can literally hear them from the other end of town. Of course our fire dept and police dept all march, the firefighters and officers are all in the parade, (the police K9 officers all have their police dogs with them, the things are the size of horses!) plus we have the Vietnam Vets of America, and we have WWII vets that recreate the flag raising at Iwo Jima. Of course, since this is the origin of the Purple Heart, we have several members of the Purple Heart Foundation marching in our parade, and some of course riding. Of course we get the school bands, and the local ROTC in the parade, as well as now and then the band from West Point. The motorcycle group, Rolling Thunder (which is a group of Vietnam Vets) normally ride in the parade, plus we have all sorts of classic cars, and trucks. Sometimes we have tanks, usually M1-A1 Abrams Tanks, and sometimes we don't. We have two fly-bys by some Army and Marine Helicopters, and by the Air Guards MASSIVE C-5A Galaxy. This among so many other things, including a regiment of the 124th NY Orange Blossoms, which is a Civil War re-enactment group, (they were also in the film "Gods And Generals" this winter) march in the parade, and they will shoot off their muskets at all of the intersections. Really really cool.

Our parade is normally at about 9 am. So, what I do to make sure my Mom and I are awake, is a 6am SHARP I crank up my stereo, and play "Reveille" (normally wakes up everyone on the block too, and makes them wonder where the fuck they are, home or an Army base) LOL And all day I play my John Philip Sousa CD's (I have 19 of them) and keep them cranked up and going. I also play other music too, so not just Sousa the entire day. Plus of course I always place a brand new flag on my grandfathers grave, who was a WWII Veteran. Also, one of the local Catholic Churches will play "America The Beautiful" and "God Bless America" on it's church bells, it really is a cool sound to hear, and is something they just started after 9-11.

Buggy and Gemini...........thank you......I'll let ya'll know

I wish I was having company for Memorial Day. Looks like this holiday will be spent the way all of mine are spent, alone. I have yet in my life to spend the holiday with someone. Oh well...
