Whats your Christmas dinner menu?

I've been craving schwarma lately. I'm sorry that was unrelated to the thread.

I know it's terrible that as a Jew I have opinions about a holiday I don't celebrate, but I totally do. For example, I have always been certain that I would only have white lights if I celebrated Christmas. I'll never have Christmas lights, so I have no idea why I bother thinking about it, but there you go.

Anyway, I feel that the whole pickle and olive plate thing is genius. Whoever came up with that is right on. I don't get the whole repeat of Thanksgiving food though. Aren't you over turkey? Ham makes more sense to me, although I'm not a huge ham fan. If I were in the pacific northwest I think I'd do a whole fish.

Again, this is sort of like if I bitched about Obama but never registered to vote. I'll go now...

Oh put up a tree already. You can believe in Santa without believing in Jesus.

Um, no.

However you can wrap your outdoor tree in white lights and think of Tavern on the Green rather than Santa. I think.

I'd probably be more likely to believe in Jesus.

Um, no.

Done right, that's true.

I really don't have Christmas envy though. I'm just an opinionated bitch.

I'm the only vegetarian in BDSM Talk, am I?

I already had Tofurky for Thanksgiving and only just finished the leftovers, so I don't want that again so soon. Family is going to make meat for themselves and a special vegetarian dish for me. I flipped through a vegetarian cookbook and settled on some tofu-and-peanut thing. I guess it's vaguely Asian but I don't care, that's what I want. So they're making it!

My wife makes KILLER mashed sweet potatoes with pecan topping OMG SO GOOD.

Um...I forget what else the meat-eaters make. I just like to make sure there is something vegetarian. :)

I was married to a veggie, so ate vegetarian xmas dinners for about 6 years. he used to make some sort of bake...almost like a meat loaf lol..well, that kinda consistency and two types of home made stuffings with mushroom gravy.

Was good.

The main dish will be lobster casserole. Various sides and such will accompany.

Damn I really fancy that mwy. Do you have the recipe?

I'm having curry.... Is that weird? :)

If it doesm then I'm a weirdo too. We had it...and not even home made lol :D

For a dinner party with friends the night before Christmas Eve:

stuffed mushrooms
shrimp with horseradish aioli

Do you buy this or make it? And if its the latter please cane you share? :)

Mum's chemo got put back til next tuesday so it looks like I'll be cooking christmas dinner.

Roast Beef with all the trimmings, including yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes.

Dessert I have no idea yet, I'll sort something lol.

Hope your mums doing ok Harmony :rose:

I am pretty sure roast beef will figure at some point during my mums stay here :)

Lol, you arent alone itw.

I used to work in an indian community and know exactly what style and colour sari I would wear :)

As for lights....good choice in my humble opinion. I tend to only do white.

and yes on the pickles and olives!

I will only be enjoying it for my mother is the chef du jour for Christmas. My best guess is that she will use a recipe similar, if not identical, to the one in Cooking Down East by Marjorie Standish. Essentially it's several pounds of cooked lobster meat, a few quarts of heavy cream and a couple pounds of butter.

Wow, you were not a vegetarian but you ate vegetarian dinners? I've never experienced that in all my 16 years of it. I'm always the only one, therefore I put up with everybody else's meat.

My favorite Mexican dinner has no meat. I haven't had Mexican in a very long time. Couple of years. Oh me and t ate at one about 18 months ago. It was a little family place. The salsa was very odd but ok.

Me too. I go to veggie and vegan groups sometimes. Often those people are trying to push partners, children and even pets to a veggie or vegan diet. I don't understand trying to do that to others. I'm particularly against it for children and pets. In all my nearly 50 years of being veggie I've never tried to convert anyone. I like people as they are mostly.

:rose:

I'd try to convince people to stop eating factory-farmed pigs, if I thought it would work. But it's pointless. People either do, or they don't, give a fuck.

I've had some success on this, actually. Usually when I describe it in terms of, hey, I'm just sayin, do you really want to eat animals that eat their own poo, it has an effect. Not an instantaneous turn around, but the wheels start turning.

Wheels turning is good. Hats off to your diplomacy.

I'm okay with children being raised vegetarian, I have a friend who's raising his daughter vegan and she is doing quite well. I'm NOT okay with it for pets. Animals are different from us.

50 years? You're not even that old, are you?!

I have another year to go before I'm 50. See I was raised veggie. So I think that I have a couple of small health issues (such as lines and groves on my nails) that would not have happened if my parents hadn't been so into their religion that they didn't worry about my diet.

:rose:

Can I ask what religion your parents were? (I realize this is way off the thread topic, but I think a vegetarian thread wouldn't be sustainable here.)

They were Seventh Day Adventists.

:rose:

Oh! I should've known that. When my doctor recently started telling me that eating meat was the best way to lose weight, friends started telling me to see a Seventh Day Adventist doctor.

My christmas dinner will be a nut roast. I'm not a veggie but my son is. HE decided that when he was six: he's 18 now and still going strong. My daughters were veggies as kids and teenagers too, so my veggie kitchen skills are well-honed.

BTW, the best veggie cookbook I've ever found is Cranks. Mine's about 26yo now and falling to bits, but I got one recently for a friend, so it's still available, at least in the UK.

WOW, good for him! I decided to be vegetarian when I was 10, a week later we went to a cookout and I had a hot dog. I actually FORGOT, ha. I decided again when I was 12, a few days before Thanksgiving, but I waited until the day after because we had family coming for dinner.

My daughters were 9 and 6 when they decided, though in the case of the younger there was a strong case of 'me too' re her big sister. Sadly they both lapsed when they were students, but my son's conviction is very strong.

I must say that in Ireland (where cattle are an economic mainstay) and in France, eating out with veggie kids can be hard.

I think people who take on the care of other people and animals should research and do the best job of stewardship possible. That includes making sure they have a nutritionally adequate diet. I don't give a flying fuck what the believe system they indulge in is, if they are neglecting those they are supposed to steward due to it, they suck. Wow. Am I in a bad mood today? LOL.

Right...but you'd think a doctor would be aware that it's possible to be a vegetarian AND have a nutritionally adequate diet. She seems to think that no meat = bad. Which is not what I want from my doctor.
