What's Your Purpose?

ROB

I suppose I need to build a chapel, here, so people can repent their progressive sins and find redemption in Dick Cheney and Karl Rove. Maybe let Ann Coulter lay hands upon the hard core.

the kids...that aside...lucky...her aside...

i have a talent for making people laugh and it thrills me beyond belief when something i do can bring relief to a shit situation. so, i guess that is one of the very many reasons i get out of bed every day.

oh and mistress guilt plays a role too. ;)

What's your reason for getting out of bed each morning? Your purpose for putting one foot in front of another? Your motivation to keep going day after day?

I'm curious.

God wants me to bring all you sick, twisted, progressives back home to the GOP. So I come here and do missionary work.

With the AV, funniest thing you've said in awhile. :)

There are people who seem to like me, and I find that pretty cool. Especially on Mondays, when the space-time continuum itself seems to hold a grudge on my ass.

". . . There lies the port; the vessel puffs her sail;
There gloom the dark, broad seas. My mariners,
Souls that have toil'd, and wrought, and thought with me,--
That ever with a frolic welcome took
The thunder and the sunshine, and opposed
Free hearts, free foreheads,-- you and I are old;
Old age hath yet his honor and his toil.
Death closes all; but something ere the end,
Some work of noble note, may yet be done,
Not unbecoming men that strove with Gods.
The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks;
The long day wanes; the slow moon climbs; the deep
Moans round with many voices. Come, my friends.
'T is not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset
, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die."

Sorry, couldn't resist. And - it's not a bad answer.

My purpose in life is my own happiness. To live The Good Life. To feel that I am accomplishing worthwhile things, and that I am a good friend to my friends, trusted colleague, valuable member of my family, productive citizen and contributing member of my society. To be stimulated by interesting new challenges and adventures until the end.

"Death closes all; but something ere the end,
Some work of noble note, may yet be done . . ."

Oh, and poorly fashioned and incomplete song parodies. I come up with a new one every week :D

I made a bet with God. I intend to see the son of a bitch lose.

So I get up every morning, give Him the finger, and continue clawing my way to the things I want in life.

Right now my purpose is selling my house. I can't think much beyond that panic.

It's a pretty shallow purpose, but it seems to be all I can handle.

I arise each morn eager to see what the world has in store for me today.

It may be monumental, intrigueing or just mundane.

But it's all part of the rich tapestry of life.

I must have my coffee first tho -- otherwise the world sucks! :D

I'd never even thought about this, which probably says something about me. :D

I get up to love and be loved, to find joy in the little things and give joy to others. I get up to battle evil not in any kind of exciting clash of swords but by helping those in need, encouraging, loving, helping, consoling, soothing and smiling. God plays a big part in my waking and going and doing. He is my motivation and strength.

I still don't think that explains it all...

to dance naked next to a lake in a mountain meadow while the sun rises

My adulation helps to keep mother nature happy (I hope!)

Well from my kids point of view:

To piss them off at every possible moment in live,
To say no when they really want to hear yes,
To make them beg and want for what they don't have,
To make them feel as though I don't want them to be happy!

Hubby's POV:

To make his breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday,
To set out his clothes everyday,
To take his calls when he isn't home,
To do the laundry, groceries and little house work that I do, do,
Oh and lets not forget...to have sex with when its convienient with his schedule.

My POV:

To maybe please someone unconditionally for a change and maybe make it to the point of seeing my kids marry and have grandkids- simple!

Thank you, everyone, for your replies. Reading through all of these has reminded me of something I read long ago by Ben Franklin:

If you would not be forgotten... either write something worth reading, or do something worth the writing.

I think this is my purpose, to live my life in such a way that it's memorable, or worth remembering –maybe just by me, looking back in my old age; but maybe, too, by those close to my heart; and hopefully by a few with whom I come in contact. I'm still processing this, but it's a start.

I appreciate all of you who shared with me your purpose. Thank you. :rose:

My fundamental purpose - my own happiness - is advanced by becoming friends with people like McKenna. :) :rose:

It's that easy and that complex a question. I want to know what your purpose is, 'cause I think I've forgotten my own.

P.S. I have to leave for work in a few, but I'll check this thread when I return and respond appropriately. Give me some feedback folks! I want to hear from you. :)

First and foremost, my baby and my family. Everything else is second to that.

my purpose?

heavens...umm... my purpose is to bring love to those who thought they wouldn't find it again. To love and cherish my little one. To pick up the hubby when he cant pick me up. I like bringing happiness to others. To live, laugh, love, sing and dance.

Past that my purpose is just to annoy the shit out of everyone who thinks I should not be in this world:devil::D

I have been thinking, not about my purpose, but about the purposes of my parents and other deceased relations:

My father: To do his duty to his country and his employers; improve himself and his family's condition so that his children had better opportunities than he had. Once he had achieved that, to continue to educate himself and to help his community.

My mother: Same as my father plus helping people to enjoy themselves even if that meant hard work for her.

One of my uncles who nearly died from TB during war service: To enjoy life as it came and to make someone laugh every day.

Another of my uncles: To make music and to spread the love of music making.

Yet another uncle: Same as my father plus the music plus helping his community.

My oldest aunt: To combat alcoholism (not her own but in others) by working for a charity most of her life; to educate and support her siblings; to work through her church to help her changing community whether or not they were believers and to enjoy life to the full.

I'm proud of them all.

To bring a little joy into someone else's life.

To ride the wave of a benevolent universe.

To see what can be made of my life next.

To find out what the purpose is.

I've wanted to post in this thread from the moment I saw it, but could never wrap my mind around what it is I think my purpose is.

Until recently, I'd have said my purpose is to raise my children in a manner that will help them be a benefit to society, and without having an unearned sense of entitlement that most kids have these days. They're getting older now, and I can see the seeds of my groundwork taking root, and they're frequently praised by the public for their behavior, but I find myself thinking what next? What now?

That's the big picture, and it'll take me a while to figure that one out.

The smaller picture, and one whose concept I can grasp more readily, is one I've shared before, in a PM with one of you who made me smile:

Some days I wake up and feel like I'm here to make someone smile. Some days, I feel like I need someone to make me smile. The best days are the days when I accomplish both.
