Wheel of Time (based on R.Jordan's books)

I never understood why everybody chooses to take a character that commands big armies

Chapter 4

Getting to Avallyn's castle was the easy part. The hard part was to avoid any Aes Sedai that might be in there. However that also didn't prove difficult because male channeling is vastly different than female. So Asiman waited for the night and then levitated and passes over the walls. The security of the castle was superb but not against those that had by no means conventional methods of entering. He landed in the courtyard of the castle near the kitchen. Using flows of Air and Spirit, he disguised himself as one of Avallyn's soldiers. There he found a serving wench cooking.
"The lady has asked for some Tenobian wine to be brought to Lord Blern.Go and get it".
The wench obviously frightened went down to the cellar and brought the wine and a bucket of preserved ice.
Using a strong flow of pure Spirit, Asiman assailed with commands the poor's girl mind.
"You are to take this wine to Lord Blern with the blessings of Avallyn as a token of friendship"
Asiman poured a pinch of white odorless powder in the wine, and presented with a daagger.
"Serve this to Lord Blern. If he doesnt take it immediately you are to slit your own throat with this dagger. Is this understood ?"
"Of course" replied the wench as if it were the most common thing in the world.
Asiman was not a fool. He always preffered subtle tactics instead of Mather simple brutal power.
The assasination would ofcourse fail. Lord Blern was a seasoned adventurer and would not fail prey to such plots. BUT it would arouse his suspicions that Avallyn wanted him incapacitated, and maybe she would profit from his death, since Blern's army would be left without a leader and demoralised. An easy pick.
As soon as the wench went upstairs he left the castle the same way he came and waited for the results to appear...

Avallyn had the distinct feeling that something was wrong. Frowning she climbed out of bed and slipped on a robe. She then hurried out of her room down the hall to where Blern slept. She had just reached his door when a serving girl came into view. Stepping in front of the girl she raised an eyebrow "What do you carry Melinda?" The serving girl looked at her and her eyes seemed to be in a daze. Her frown deepening Avallyn snapped her fingers. The girl blinked but that was all. "Melinda I demand you answer me" and just as before she was met with silence. Taking matters into her own hands she grabbed what the girl was carrying and was surprised to see whine and ice. "Were you bringing this to Blern? On who's orders?" she asked. The girl as usual just stared at her. Sniffing the whine she detected no unusual odors. But for some reason this did not seem right. "I will take it to Blern you go back to bed" Avallyn said. For once Melinda spoke up "I must bring it to him, no one else but I" Shaking her head Avallyn turned towards Blern's door. "No Melinda I will, now go back to bed that is an order". The girl made a grab for the whine and a small fight ensued that resulted in the whine being spilled all over the carpet. Melinda with a strange look on her face glanced up at Avallyn then took a dagger that had been hiding in her clothes and before Avallyn could stop her she slit her own throat dying almost instantly. Blinking Avallyn just stared then at the top of her lungs "Gaurds!"

OFF THE RECORD

Since Siren had this bad feeling then I must come up with sth else.
But, if everything I do fails then all the good guys get together and defeat Mather and that's the end of story.
A most likely scenario would be to arouse mayhem by which Avallyn must prove to Blern that she wasn't the cause of this assasination attempt and restore the balance.
Anyway you can't role fair if the good guys always win.
There must be some tragic element in the thread.

OOC: This has to be a give and take or it wont be intresting. One side cant always win, or undermine the other side, or it wont be fun for all.

Blern jumped awake and rushed outside longsword in hand. He sniffed. He felt a very faint smell of poison. He thanked the gods for his raised senses, then saw a girl with her throat slit. He turned to see Avallyn. "You tired to poison me! You killed her! This is war!" he roared. He pulled a shirt on hurriedly, then charged downthe hall, until he was outside. He rushed to the barracks and roused his trumpeteers. "Rouse the army, we march back now! There has been an attempt on my life!" he shouted. A servant rushed out of the castle with his personal things. He grabbed his horse and swung on. "Get the generals! Get everyone outside now! I want to be back at my castle by tomorrow!" he roared, strapping some armor on. Soldiers came out of the barracks everywhere. He relayed news of the flase assassination attempt, and then, his army marched. They were back in his castle by the next day, and he immediately sent dispatches to the forces of Shadow. These dispatches were sent with promise of an alliance. He did not take the time to think that Avallyn had actually saved him.

Valerios

Valerios sat and pondered at his desk late into the night the ramifications of the soon to be announced alliance between Blern and the Aiel. In all the ways it looked, it should result in the destruction of the Shadow, BUT, they might not just settle for them alone. Afterall, Turan WAS the richest country and had the most to give any conquerer, and he KNEW Blern all to well. He wouldn't just settle for a measly few leagues of blasted wasteland. Sitting back he ringed for a messenger. When he came in he asked him to send dispatches to Jarred and the Black Tower to inquire into his hiring them to protect his borders and to act as his spys in the enemy camps...

Blern grabbed a sword and headed off to the practice rooms. He had a target created that looked particularly like Avallyn, then dismissed everyone. "Teach you to try against me!" he shouted angrily, cutting at the target. He shouted more and more curses with every stroke. The 5th one ended up with him cutting the target in half.

OOC: just trying to balance the sides a bit. ;)

OOC: We all took big armies, becuase we were first and needed some one to lead all the armies. And thank you much Morgoth, we realy needed some twist, or this would end up all vs the Dark Lord. I ust wanted to point out that Westmarch was established as the "goodie toshoes" in the start.

IC:

Mather was in his studie when the request of a treaty from Blern reached him. Mather tought it strange that Blern would change sides so fast. Only yesterday he was in the Aiels castle. Mather walked over to a miror that was hanging ont he wall. It wasnt a normal mirror, it was smoky black, with red and gold runes engraved around the rims. One of Mather's powerfull ter'angreal that would let him communicate over great distances. With only a little concentrating and a small, but detaled flow of spirit, Mather worked the mirror twards Blern's castle. Once so close to Blern, it was esy for the powerfull artifact to find him. The mirror showed Mather a work room where Blern was busy beating the stuffing out of a target that looked remarkable like Avallyn. Mather then feed a flow of air and fire into the ter'angreal. A window opened in space, simaler to a portal, but only leting imajes and sound pass through.

"So Blern, why the sudden about face?"

OOC: sorry about that, good save Morgoth :)

IC: Avallyn had been in shock at Blern's accusations so just stood there as he left. Gaurds swarmed her castle throughout the night for an intruder but none was found. She stood on her balcony glaring at the horizon. "Damn that Mather and his dirty little tricks" she muttered. She was also upset with Blern. How could he believe her of something like this. If she wanted him dead she would have done it herself. Now she had two enemies and no where to turn. She knew her army was sizable enough to hold them off but for how long. Gripping the Balcony rail she closed her eyes against the sadness she felt at the loss of not Blern's army but Blern himself. They had always be friends, though they had their differences. Pushing that away she laughed bitterly. She had learned along time ago that you couldn't trust anyone but yourself. Turning towards her office she yelled "Get me Illynya!"

OOC: I am going ona camping trip till saturday. We are going to do some Larp and beat the crap out of each other. I leave the side of darkness to Asmodean.

"WHY?! You ask me why?! Avallyn decided to try to assassinate me! A servant grappled with her and broke the bottle of poisonous wine. Then, Avallyn slit the servant's throat. I want her head on a golden platter with her brains for a sidedish!" shouted Blern angrily, cutting half the target in half again.

OOC: Thanks. It wasn't very hard to take avantage of the situation, though.

Avallyn knew Blern's fury, it had been one of the things she admired in him. The way he could just lose control. Illynya appeared in her room. "Avallyn?" she spun around and looked sadly at her old friend " Hello Illynya, please have a seat" Illynya did as she requested. "Blern has declared war on us and I believe he shall seek alliance with Mather" sighing soflty she gazed out of the window "What happened? I mean I heard the yelling but what really happened?" she asked her face showing her worry. "I don't know for certain. A servant was taking some wine to him. She said I told her to, I felt an odd sense of danger coming from the girl. I tried taking the wine but she struggled with me. When I told her I would not allow her to give the wine to Blern she slit her throat" Shaking her head she pounded her fist on the desk "and that oaf Blern believed I had tried to kill him, Can you believe it? I save his life and he declares war. What is this world coming to!" she stood up and began to pace. "You know what the worst part is? I really care about Blern, I mean I really care. I wasn't sure what it was and when I saw him I decided to find out then this happens. How can I fight him?" Illynya stood up "I think you should talk to him, take some gaurds and ride to his capitol" Avallyn looked at her as if she was crazy "Yeah right, He would have me beheaded in no time" shaking her head "He want war he will get it, if he held so little trust in me to not even ask me about it then he obviously doesn't have the same feelings for me. Ready the troops we will be staging another attack!"

Valerios

Reading through the latest batch of reports from his various spy networks Valerios could only shake his head the the bewildering array of choices being made by his fellow heads of state. "Can't these people bloody figure out who their allied with and fighting for even a bleeding day, by the ever potent creator." he swore as read of the shifting allegiances of Blern. Putting his head on his hands he thought over the next best course of action for his country. PUlling the summons cord he awaited his page. "Boy, I want you to run a note over to Lord Calgor to ready the army and the forts along our border with Blern and his psychotic horde. Tell him I have a bad feeling things will get almighty to busy soon enough." and leaning back in his chair he thought long and hard on the actions he could take to keep war from engulfing the entire world and his nation.

Chapter 6

Asmodean knew that his plan had worked the moment he saw Blern coming out of Avallyn's castle and shouting for his guard. Of course Avallyn would suspect that somehow some sorcery was afoot but it didn't matter. So he returned back to Mather to report news of his mission.
Instead he found out that Mather had gone to Shayol Ghul for a personal audience with Shaidar Haran himself. That left him alone waiting for him. But he didn't stand idle. His extensive network of spies which he trusted (controlled) were reporting to him regularly. One day one of them came panting inside Asiman's chambers.
"Sir,I've grave news to report I'm afraid."
"So what is it? Out with it man !"
"There seems to be a man in the Two Rivers area that has proclaimed himself The Dragon Reborn and has started to amass armies under his command. Till now he hasn't sweared allegience to anyone but it won't be late."
"NO ! ,not this time. I shall not tolerate another Mazrim Taim or Logain" (It didn't even passed from his mind that this could be the real Dragon Reborn).
"Go now and bring me more information by a forthnight or your life is forfeit! Every means at this camp is available to your disposal. Do not fail or I'll find you and teach you that noone fails me more than once !"
After the spy left he considered how much of this information had already reached the enemy...

Is this going to be an all-out war?

The reports were numerous. Avallyn was preparing for war against Blern and so was Valerios who had doubled the manpower along his borders. Maybe Tarmon Gaidon would not find very much to destroy if a world war is going to erupt.
He sent Lord Blern a message asking him if he wanted Mather's forces to be deployed along his own.
Meanwhile he waited for the reports from the Two Rivers area.

Avallyn decided to write some messages. Taking out an ink and parchment she wrote one first one to Valerios. My good friend. Often we have stayed friends, and faught along side each other many times. I now ask for another of those times. I fear I have been tricked out of an alliance with Blern and I admit I'm in sore need of soldiers.. I have enough to hold me over for a while but not to win the war. I propose an alliance between us. This could benefit us both. I pray that you accept this offer. Tribute is something we can discuss if needed. Please get back to me with a decision as soon a possible. Your Friend Avallyn of the Aiel The next one she wrote to Blern Dearest Blern, I wish you had not have stormed out like that. You think the worst of me something I am confused by. I have always been your friend, and at one time more then that. Our kingdoms have never had a disagreement and now you automatically jump to a conclusion. I will not beg you to believe me I will only say this once. I did not try to poison you, the servant was trying to. She seemed to be in a daze. When I told her she could not bring you the wine she slit her own throat. Would I have called for gaurds if I was guilty? Well now that I have stated my case I ask that you think on this and think of the friendship you are throwing away. I will not hesitate to bring you kingdom to it's knees if you threaten mine. And that dear Blern is not a threat, it is a promise. Sadly Your Enemy Avallyn of Aiel after signing both with her seal she sent them immediatly. After the messenger left she buried her face in her hands and for the first time in years, she cried

Mather was shaking by the time he returneed from Shayol Ghul. It is one thing to know that the end of th world is coming, it is another to be told by the Great Lords mouth peice that it will be here soon. Mather could still rember the way the voice of the Lord vibrated throught his very being. How could he not belive that Tarmon Gaidon was near, with the way the world was about to break in war, and another false dragon. Mather decided that the bigest problem that faced him was Avallyn and her Aiel. They were ready to cause some serious damage. It would be difficult to kill Avallyn her self, but it would be easy to kill all her freiends and allies. Mather found Asmodean proing over some inteligance reports. "I congradulate you on a job well done. You were able to break up that allince and gain us a new allie. Now we must continue to strike at Avallyn till she is nothing. I wasnt you till kill her friend Illynya. Do it in the most horrid and gross amnner possible, I want it to be tramatising." Mather turned and walked out of the room leaving Asmodean with his orders.

Valerios

Closing his eyes in pain from the strain of having read so many reports Valerios returned to reading the letter from Avallyn. Sighing he began to write back...

"My dearest friend. It grieves me to find you in such a bad state. As you know I sit on Blern's border and thus must worry myself with that first and foremost. BUT, I have contracted the Black Tower to my cause, and so I will send you fifty male Aes Sedai and the first three regiments of the Dark Moor Watch (a unit much like earth's French Foreign Legion made up of people from various walks of life who serve under the Turan King, whom can be turned over to an ally in times of war to keep the Turan's from direct involvement.) to aid you in your time of need. I will alose be sending roughly 3 thousand tons of supplies ranging from foostuffs and weapons to animals to aid you. The only payment I seek is your son's consideration to the betrothment to my daughter. If he agrees, I will glady add the entire strength of my kingdom to yours. Sincerely yours, Valerios de Turan." he finished with a flourish. Then sitting back he considered his letter to Blern as a page took the messahe away to be sent to the Aiel.

Avallyn read the letter from Valerious and smiled. Calling for her son he walked in. "Hello Mother you called for me?" smiling she stood up and hugged her son. He was her secret in a way. No one knew who the father was only she did. And she kept that secret from Blern, for Blern was the boys father. Oh well she thought to herself. "Paul you are getting older, and I think that you should be married. You know how it is in kingdoms where there are fixed marriages to further help a kingdom. We are no different. I wish for you to marry Valerious's daughter. She is a kind girl and is quite pretty. I believe she would be a good match for you" her son looked at her a moment "I don't even know her mother" Avallyn patted her sons hand "the wedding wouldn't be right away, just the betrothment and you would have time to get to know her before the wedding. Please son, you know I don't ask much of you but I need this full alliance and our kingdom is going to pull through this war" after a few more moments of hesitation Paul nodded. "Ok mother I will do this" smiling she hugged her son tightly. " Thank you son, I will arranged a transport first thing tomorrow morning for you to travel there" she turned back to her desk and quickly wrote to Valerious Dear Friend, My son has accepted your offer and will visit you as soon as it is possible. Thank you for your support in this and I wish you daughter and my son the best of happiness. Your Friend Avallyn of the Aiel

Valerios

Sitting back in his chair once again, Valerios read over the letter being sent to Blern...
"Blern, as you know I do not involve myself willingly in many things, especially if it will lead to war. But I must tell you that planning to ally with Mather is a foolish thing. Yes, I KNOW about that little alliance and even Avallyn doesn't know it herself yet. I urge you under all that is Holy to the creator to reconsider. If you do not, that is your choice and I will respect your decision. If you do so, I will warn you now, as one head of state to another, that if so much as one of your men SHITS on MY side of the border, I will not rest till your country is burned to the ground and I have sold all your people to Mather as fodder for his Trollocs for a hefty sum. UNDERSTOOD? Good, and by the way, three regiments of the Dark Moor Watch will soon be traveling the merchants road to the Aiels camp along with some supplies. As you know I will supply whoever gives me payment. If you wish I am prepared to offer you the same amounts I do the Aiel. Write me when you have considered. Oh, and by the way. As you know only one man has ever beaten you, and that is Lord Calgor, who now sits across from your border. Sincerely yours, Valerios De Turan." and sent it to Blern via messanger.

Looking out at the starry sky he called his page. "Boy, could you fetch Caitlin for me? Thank you." and sat back to await his daughter.

Blern sorted through the messages. He did not much like the tone in Valerios's. He wrote his first to valerios: "Do not presume to threaten me. Another message in something even resembling that tone and my soldiers will be shitting on your burning capitol. But that is another threat, isn't it? Yes, I shall consider my alliance with Mather. Actually, I'm going to cancel it and claim neutrality. At least for a while. Goodbye, my Friend. Blern" The next one he sent to Mather: "Mather, I have decided that so far I wish to have no part in this god-bedamned war. Therefore, I will claim neautrality. But presume to even threaten me, and I will soon have your head paraded on a pike. Sincerely, Blern" The last he sent to Avallyn. "Avallyn, I have thought on the night, and am no longer sure of anything. Therefore, I have terminated my alliance with Mather and wish to claim neutrality. I still will send mercenaries over and am shipping 1,500,000 tons of supplies. Hopefully still your friend, Blern". He gave them to messengers and sent them on their way. He then organized 15 regiments of mercenaries and the supplies. Then sent them to Aiel.

Avallyn was not satisfied with Blern. She wanted him to believe her innocent not be unsure about the night. Gripping her desk her frown increased as she thought of the war approaching. Soon Mather would be attacking her. She had to act fast, "Illynya!" she called. Her general entered a few moments late "Yes m'lady?" she smiled at her. "Organize a nice sized regiment of Soldiers and send them to Mather's city of Rothwald. I believe it is located on our border. It will make a good place to gather men to gaurd the border. I want you to kill any who resist and send their heads to Mather, any who wish to concede will be sold to slavery or ransomed. I want no child or mother harmed if it is possible. If you find a high ranking official do your best to keep him alive and send him to me. Now go and do as I command" Illynya nodded "yes m'lady" then she left

The Next morning

Illynya sat upon her horse gazing at the town below. Not many soldiers gaurded it, it shouldn't be to hard to take. Relaying orders to her men she signled her archers. Arrow were readied and set afire then the battle began. Illynya was concious only of her sword and of the Trollocs she faught. Slashing to her right and left she made a pathway to the villiage. By that night few Trollocs remained alive. Many were beheaded few were ransomed. All Women and children were told to flee to Mather and that they would not be harmed. Looking to her other soldiers she named a leader and left two thirds of them their and headed home.

Asiman was not pleased. Blern has proclaimed himself neutral and therefore lost the advantage of terminating both Valerios and Avallyn.
But orders were orders.
He would deal with Avallyn's liitle wench but in a manner most satisfactory to him, not to Mather.
He closed himself in his chambers and gave direct orders on pain of death that nobody should disturb him. What he was about to do would drain him much, maybe even kill him in the process.
Drawing a five star scetch on the floor, he springled some sulfur over it.Then he drawed some arcane symbols and when was all ready he started to chant. The spell he was about to cast would teleport Illyena to a chamber he had speciffically
prepared for and leave in her place a dead woman who only resembled Illyena in her outer characteristics. After all one such as this would reveal important information about Avallyn and he would not of course kill her like Mather had said.
Mather that bluberring fool, he thinks that blood and gore is all that pleases the Great Lord.
Well he would get his information and then use it to elevate himself in the Great Lord's eyes instead of Mather.
Casting his spell he felt the tingle of Saidin pouring through him and felt himself drained.
Finally, he transfered the woman's mutilated body in Illyena place and dropped dead tired in the floor.

The next day after he woke he went immediately in the chamber where he had teleported Illyena only to find the magic locked door opened and nobody inside. The wench had escaped !!
There were spies for sure or someone had watched him through magic means.
He would find the wench and make her suffer for this as well as all who had helped her. After all there were 2000 miles of road between Mather's castle and Avallyn's.
He would get her and when he did...

Mather was slowly strowling through his tower, thinking to himself. THeir were many problems developing. People were shifting sides left and right, and he had been told to get things under controll or else. And there was something wrong with Asmodean, but Mather couldent put his finger on the problem. Mather sighed and headed for the army camp postioned out sied his Tower. It would be fun to have a suprise inspection of the camp. As mather left the cool tower, the hot air blasted him with the pleasent stench of death and decay. A milling crowed of women and children cot Mather's antention. Ther wasent suposed to be humans here. Mather saw a fade trying to controll the group. He walked over to the milling group and ordered the Fade to explain why the Humans where here. The fade walked over to a wagon and pulled the canvas back. The wagan was filled from top to bottom with the severed head of trolocks and gaurds men. "They took the town of Rothwald. Most of the guard was dead before they even know they were underatack. Archers on the hill took care of that. Avallyn's men then rode into the town and slottered all the men, and sent the women and children here."

"Very well," Mather begain to pace. "Very well, I will have to deal with her. I have nothing to do with the humans, so cook them." Mather walked away from the group twards his tower, listening to the sound of crying women and children, and then smiled.
